Can anyone give me a recommendation(s) of a good internet security suite that has parental controls built in? My daughter is 12 years old, and I currently have OneCare installed on her laptop with CyberPatrol for internet filtering to protect her from undesirable sites. CyberPatrol worked well until the latest "upgrade" which now overblocks badly regardless of settings. Her OneCare subscription expires at the end of February, so I thought it might be best to get a suite with built in parental controls.

Agree with djohn. Check out http://www.opendns.com/

Instead of getting an AV that features parental control, might want to get a standard AV and try opendns which specialises in content filtering, and many schools use it.

Just a question, does opendns benefit the regular user who doesn't need content filtering? It says websites will load faster.

My quick readover makes it look like it's totally free - have I got that right or is there some cost if you use the filtering? Sounds pretty good, any drawbacks?

Yes, it does. My ISP's DNS servers are absolute crap and when I switched to OpenDNS I noticed a big improvement in page load times.

You can turn off filtering off or set low for phishing only and up each level for more restrictive settings.Besides the security it can provide an entire Family Some other benefits may or may not be noticeable in speeds but I use High speed cable and more times then I like there own ISP servers are Flaky.OpenDNS is stable consistent 99.9 percent of the time also I do not notice bottle neck slow down during peak times when every one is sharing bandwith. You can set up the computer or a router it self so all networked computers will benefit from OpenDns.

Daaaa-yamn! Thanks a bunch for this, djohn. I am all hooked in and verified my free account and have my 7 machine home network router all set up. I set the filtering at moderate level and we'll see how that works out with this crew of young surfers I have around here.:thumb:

Your very Welcome. Please note any setting changes you do takes aprox 3 minutes for the servers to take hold another words let say you have No restrictions for your self but decide to turn it on for son /Daughter and let them hope aboard until the server takes hold of the restriction setting they can freely land on an unwelcome site until it takes hold/updates at the server side.

So, If I you have say 5 computers and if you set this up any changes will affect ALL computer, no way of having different settings for each computer?

OOPs never mind...Per their instructions you can just change the dns on the computer to theirs so I guess you can set each computer up or change the setting in the router to have them all filtered

I took djohn's advice and use openDNS now and WoW! It rocks!

I have a question though: I have a dynamic IP so I installed their dynamic IP client for Windows (openDNS-updater).
Within the program it provides me the option to install as service. Is this better?

Yep, I just set mine up (have fixed IP address, at least for last 3 years) in the router. I'll just sit back and see if I get either complaints or comments about "the internet" working better.

Norton Internet Security has parental controls if you install the free Norton Add-on Pack. I haven't tried it out myself, but since so many good things have been said about NIS 2009, you may want to give it a spin. Note that while the Add-on Pack is free, it still requires a copy of NIS 2009 (or Norton 360).

I have one external ip (one from isp) address so I cannot set it up for multiple computers using different settings since. I set it up in the router and guess when I want to look at some questionable...well I'll just change the settings and change it back.

Thanks everyone for the great suggestion. I have just set up OpenDNS on the router at my ex-wife's house where my daughter is most of the time. I also installed the OpenDNS Updater on my daughter's laptop. I have a question, though. When she brings her laptop to my house, where I will also set up OpenDNS, will there be any conflicts? Also, what if she takes her laptop somewhere else?

I can't answer that, but one thing I wanted to add is that with controls from a software suite, they are easily disabled and bypassed. However, with OpenDNS, unless they know they are using OpenDNS and where to find the settings on the website, it's not so easy.

If a site is block it directs to a open dns page and says it is block and gives the reason why. So they will know they are using open dns.

Yes they will know but they can not do anything to the settings that require user name and passwords to log on the dashboard to gain access to the Security settings.
