What are your thoughts on OpenDNS?

Does OpenDNS stop ones ISP from recording/Retaining logs of the web sites one visits if DNS Requests are going thru OpenDNS Servers, instead of your ISP's servers?

Is OpenDNS a good "Safe" alternative to ones ISP's DNS Servers as far as privacy is concerned?

I don't see where it will make any difference as far as privacy is concerned. Your DNS requests are still going through your ISP. It wouldn't be difficult for them to monitor and log all port 53 traffic. Even if they didn't have access to the DNS traffic, they can log where your systems connects to immediately afterwards, which basically gives them the same information. Unless you're using TOR or an equivalent and have taken precautions to cover DNS requests, your ISP can see where you visit, with or without DNS records.

 

OpenDNS is usefull for extra DNS-managment, better reliability and getting around unenforced DNS-blocks. But it has nothing to do with privacy and it won't stop anyone from seeing and logging the websites you visit.

 

I use OpenDNS because MY ISP Servers are Flaky at times but thy will not admitt to it.Every since I switched its been consistent 99.9 much more consistent then my ISP Servers.As far as privacy I can not comment on that,Is there such thing anyways.Anyways I love it works great and have not looked back.

 

OpenDNS will not help your privacy because your ISP logs the ip's you visit.

I use OpenDNS for all the reasons stated on its pages:
-Deal with DNS outages(never had one though, i use my isp's DNS as a redunancy for OpenDNS)
-Phishing protection
-Protection from DNS poisoning

 

Thank you all for your advice in this matter, now I can clear things up with the one who tried to say DNS requests wouldn't go thru my ISPs (Data Retention) servers with the use of OpenDNS!

 

I have been using it for 2 weeks or so, but I like a lot the filtering it provides and the shortcuts it allows you to create.

It makes my browsing even faster that way

Just remember that if you use a hardware router with both Home-Network and WAN-coax DNS settings (i.e. two different DNS settings) that connect to your ISP's DNS servers, you will probably need to change both if you are connected via WAN-coax to your ISP.

I had changed my Home-network DNS settings on my ISP's router to OpenDNS, but found out about the other WAN-coax DNS settings that I somehow missed initially when a web page that no longer existed came up with a message from my ISP's DNS server (which told me there was more that needed to be reset to OpenDNS in my DNS settings).
