I have recently downloaded ATI 2009. I have build 9646. When I try to set up a schedule to backup my System State or my hard drive, ATI wants to save the backup to my D drive of my internal hard drive. I want to save it to my F drive (my external WD hard drive).

It refuses to let me choose the F drive giving me the error message: F:\ is not accessible. Access denied.

Why is it limiting me to making backups to my internal hard drive?

    Thank you for your assistance,
    Cindy

    Hellooooo...is anybody there?

Still needing help with this issue

I did forget to mention that this is a Vista computer if that helps.

Thanks in advance to anyone who can help me,

The USB drive should be connected directly to one of the rear usb ports. Make sure it is powered up before opening the TI program.
If still out of luck boot from the TI rescue CD having left the USB drive running.

In the event that it still does not work someone else will have to help as I do not use either the dreaded V2009 or Vista.

My Computer recognizes the drive when it is plugged into the USB port. It has since let me set regular scheduled backups to it but not "My Data" backups to it. Trying to go the route of My Data sets up a chain of weird popups that I can't get out of until I kill ATI totally.

When I click on My Data a box pops up that tells me "Error...Documents in this folder are not available. The folder may have been moved or deleted, or network problems may be preventing a connection to the server."

My data is on a partian of my hard drive on my computer. It has not been moved anywhere, I do not have to access a network to get to it or need a connection to a server to get to it. Why am I getting this error message?

When I click on "OK" to close out of this error message, another box pops up that has a title of "Connect to members.tripod.com" and wants me to enter a user name and a password. This looks like the Front Page box that pops up when I am using Front Page to work on a web site. Why is ATI trying to connect to this site to back up data on my internal hard drive?

I click on CANCEL but this box reappears for at least 3 more times then gives me the Error message "You do not have permission to access this Web Folder location." I don't want to access this Web Folder...I only want to access My Data on my internal hard drive and save it to my external USB hard drive.

When I click on OK to this error message...the darn Front Page type box pops up again "Connect to members.tripod.com" and wants me to enter a user name and a password. The process repeats itself...cancel 3 times only to get the Error message "You do not have permission to access this Web Folder location." again.

Process repeats itself again when I click on the You do not have permission error message. This process repeats itself two more times when finally after clicking on the last You do not have access error message a different box pops up.

The next box has a title at the top "Sign in with Windows Live ID" and it wants me to enter a signin name and password.

When I click on CANCEL an error box pops up that says "Error...Documents in this folder are not available. The folder may have been moved or deleted, or network problems may be preventing a connection to the server."
just like above with the Front Page type box only now it is happening with the Windows Live ID box.

When I click on OK to it, proces begins again with the "Connect to members.tripod.com" and wants me to enter a user name and a password. Cancelling out of it again gives me the "You do not have permission to access this Web Folder location."

Clicking OK to it finally ends the ordeal but now I am back to the program with nothing to show for my efforts of trying to backup my DATA.

If I try to click on My DATA again to start the backup...the whole process of a bunch of error messages starts all over...then maybe ATI will lock up totally and I have to kill it in task manager because I can't even close it OR a different box pops up that actually says BACKUP WIZARD.

But if I get the BackupWizard and then click on my data drive to chose it to backup I get the "ERROR ...Documents in this folder are not available. The folder may have been moved or deleted, or network problems may be preventing a connection to the server." box AGAIN!!!

Clicking OK on that box starts the popup to tripod box again. Somewhere in this mess the ATI program locked up again and either I wait for it to die on its own or I try and kill it in task manager.

The results are the same every time...I guess I could just do the regular backups but I wanted to pick and chose some individual files to back up on schedule in a separate file. It just doesn't make sense why it is doing this to me.

I've never tried to boot from the backup disk I supposedly created. I guess it is time to check it out too, but if I needed to do that every time I could not have a scheduled backup without me being present to always insert the disk.

This has to be a bug in the system. It is too weird not to be.

    Thank you,
    Cindy

Please give us some idea of your system for instance is the D:\ drive a second internal drive or a partition on your only drive.

A number of us don't use TI to backup data preferring to use a copy program such as Karen’s Replicator or Microsoft’s Synctoy, both free.

I suggest that you search this forum for any post by GroverH and download and read his guides. Also I suggest (if you haven't already) name your drives with meaningful names. When you come to restore whether from the rescue disk or from Windows TI uses Linux which will give different letters to your drive to those seen in Windows.

It is important to boot with the rescue disk and see if TI can see all your drives, it will be too late if you have an emergency! Read the appendix in the user manual or the sticky “Read Before You Post” to see the commands which you can use with the rescue disk to help with various problems.

Many say the only way to be sure that TI or any other backup program will work on your hardware is to do a restore to a spare drive.

I'm sorry. I put that info in a different post but forgot to put it here. I am running an Acer Aspire with Vista Ultimate. It is a 500 GB drive, partitioned into a C drive and a D drive.

I have tried to keep stuff off the C drive as much as possible but some things force themselves on it when installing because they don't ask you where you want to install it at. However it is pretty full... it is partioned with 104 GB and it shows 100 GB used. I have yet had time to figure out what I could safely move off of there.

The D drive I have named DATA it is partioned to be 289GB of which 197 GB is used.

I haven't figured out where the other 100 GB went to (to make up the 500). I assumed it is hidden somewhere by the system.

I will check them out. Will they do system backups or program backup too (like ACronis is supposed to do)?

I have seen Grover's posts in many of the posts I have read. I have even looked at his "beginner" guides but they were written for other versions so I didn't want to get too carried away since they were not written for ATI Home 2009. And it is ATI HOme 2009 that everyone seems to agree is having problems and needing fixes that are not addressed yet. OT: Is there a way to down grade to a known good working version, (the ones that got all the rave reviews upon which I based my purchase on  ) while I am waiting for the fixes to come for 2009?

If my rescue disk that I made is defective, would it hurt my presently working system in anyway if I practice booting from it?

Thank you again for your time!
    Cindy :D

If your TI rescue cd is defective, I would remake. If your rescue cd is not functional, I would open a Live Chat with support on your many problems. Whether your Rescue CD works or not, I believe I would do a Live Chat on your problems enumerated in your first post above.

No they produce a copy similar to copying files from explorer but with more sophistication

The principal is still the same for backup and restore.

See GroverH post, if your rescue disk cannot work on your system Acronis will give you a link to a new iso which will enable you to burn a disk that hopefully will work. If all else fails you can make a BartPE or VistaPE disk

I haven't rebooted yet to test my boot CD but I have to ask what is a BartPE or VistaPE disk? What does the PE stand for?

PS: I sent a contact form to Acronis with the above annoying popup symptoms to see what their reply would be.

    Thanks,

You must test the CD, if it can't see all your drives you cannot restore the system drive.

To learn about PE disks search this forum or Google for each of them. Basically they use Windows system drivers instead of Linux that TI uses.

    Hi Everyone,

First I will apologize is this is a duplicate for some of you as I have different issues posted in this group and not all the readers/posters to my issues have been the same. However, many of the suggested posts have been similar so I am trying to get back to everyone to keep them up to date.

After spending many late nights on these problems I took a break from the computer for several days. But I did follow through on a couple of items. I cleaned up my C drive and created more free space. Turned out there were many duplicate files on there from pictures and old PST files from my previous computer. I thought I had moved them off my C drive to my D drive long ago but I must have copied them to my D drive, not moved them to the D drive.

Second, I put in the boot CD that I created and rebooted my computer but I am not sure that it booted from the CD versus just normal booting. The computer started up just like normal. I expected some sort of message telling me that I just booted from a disk...instead I just got my normal login screen. How can I know if it booted from the CD?

Third, I still need to figure out how to back up without running out of space so quick...and I just need to get around to deleting all the files on my external drive (or reformatting it) and just starting all over since it has now been over a month since I've been able to back up...just wanted you guys to know I am still working on things.

Fourth...some one suggested looking for my "unknown/missing" 100 GB on my computer in management...it took me a while to figure out how to find this "management" but I eventually did. Here is what it said...didn't realize I had "other partitions" on this computer too. Wish there was a way for me to copy and paste this info instead of writing it all by hand...

There are 5 partitions on my internal hard drive. 3 have names but 2 do not.

The first "NO NAME" is a simple basic, "no file system", status is Healthy (ESA Configuration), Capacity 9.76 GB, Free Space 9.76 GB, Free Space 9.76 GB, % free 100%.

The second "NO NAME" is also a simple basic, "no file system", status is Healthy (Primary Partition), Capacity is 61.99 GB, Free Space is 61.99 GB, % free 100%.

The third volume is "ACER C", simple basic, NTFS, Healthy (System, Boot, Page File, Active, Crash dump, Primary Partition), Capacity 104.21 GB, Free Space 48.97 GB, % free 47%.

The fourth volume is "ACRONIS Media E", simple basic, CDFS, Healthy (Primary Partition) 64 MB, free space 0 MB, % free 0%.

The fifth volume is "DATA D", simple basic, NTFS, Healthy (Primary Partition), Capacity 289.80 GB, Free Space 91.29 GB, % free 32 %.

So with this 3 "other drives" beside my C and my D I can now account for roughly 70GB of the missing 100 GB on my computer. However, I do not know what the purpose of the two "NO NAME" volumes are. There doesn't appear to have any info on them since they are 100 % free. Can someone tell me something about them?

On one of the other suggestions, I went to "Karen's" and took a look at the info but haven't had time to download and play with it yet.

On the two requests for support from the Acronis web site that I submitted A WEEK AGO, I have not heard a single word from Acronis at all. I thought they responded to all requests for help! Any idea when I might hear back from them?

    Thanks,
    Cindy

Just a quick reply to your second and third points.

Your computer is not booting from the rescue CD. If it were it would land on the Acronis GUI.
The remedy is to change the boot order so that it starts from the CD first.

When you clear out your external drive I suggest you re-format it in FAT 32 if it is in NTFS.
It appears that file or folders backups and restores do not play well with NTFS media. Full partitions or complete HDDs are happy with either file system.

I've asked in another post how to "change boot order" so I am sure to get this info soon.

I am confused with the instruction to change the format of the external drive back to FAT 32...My internal is NTFS so why would I want to have it different on my external? Also, (before I realized the external came out of the box with FAT 32) the backups would not work as I got the message that the backup could not complete as it was full. Seems FAT 32 has a limit of size of only ?4GB if I remember right and that is no where near the size of my internal hard drive.

    Thank you,
    Cindy

Just so you don't get confused (and we don't get confused trying to help) could you stick to one posting topic if possible to try and solve your problems.

Before you worry about reformatting in Fat32 I suggest you need to make a decision about how you wish to make backups and then make sure the methods work. It may help all to step back a bit and look at your problems.

    Problem One
As I see from your postings you intially posted that you had ATI making backups but ran out of space on the external drive. That posting lead to a discussion about whether you really needed to do backups in that manner (with suggestions to use another programme such as Karen's Replicator to backup your data files) and whether you had tried your ATI boot CD so you could restore the drives and data if the main drive failed or got corrupted.
You then tried to boot with the ATI CD but are only booting into Windows.
Note: the problem with filling up the drive has not been solved.

    Problem Two
You also have a problem with seeking to backup MyData to the external drive with resulting weird behaviour from TI. The posting here would seem to show you have ONE hard disk drive with 5 partitions with drive letters C, D, E and two partitions with no drive letter attached. These are probably associated with recovery software with ACER computer. (If you read your Acer manual you will see that if you push special keys during booting the computer will enter a recovery programme and reinstall Vista to the factory default if it becomes corrupt from a virus or malware)

This discussion had led to a suggestion that ATI files and folders backup work better with Fat32.

In my view as I stated in an earlier posting it would help to make some decisions as to what you want to achieve with the backups.

If I had the same problems as you I would:

    Problem 1 Solution
Use TI to backup the recovery partitions and the C partitions (I am not sure what "ACRONIS Media E" is) and save to the F external drive. I would manually do a full backup each time. I would make sure I would backup track 0 and the MBR as well of the drive. I would keep the previous backup so I always have two consecutive backups on the F drive if I had enough space. The scheduling part of ATI 2009 seems too problematic to trust.

This would solve your problem of the drive getting too full and ATI not deleting the older backup.
It is best to keep things simple.

    Problem 2 Solution
Use Karen Replicator to backup the data files from any partition I want.
You can set it's to run on a schedule -every hour if you wish- so it you do it as often as you like and it will only backup new and changed files as needed or you can do it manually.

This will solve the problem you described when trying to backup My DATA. IT has the added bonus of your files not being in the TIB format. Experience in the forum has shown that any small error in the TIB file results in all the files in it being inaccessible. There is no need to change the Fat32 for the external drive

Problem 3 Solution- Boot from ATI CD

When you boot your computer there is a key that you can push while that will get you into the BIOS. On my computer it is F2. Have a look in your Acer Manual I think F2 is the key for Acer.

You can then select with the arrow keys options and one is a list of what the computer should boot from first.

You make a CD the first option. It won't matter if it stays like that as if it has not CD in the CD drive it will go to the next option which is the Hard Drive.

Once you get the CD booting then follow GroverH advice make sure you can restore if needed.

I purchased another external harddrive and now plan to put my C drive (OS and some non-OS programs) on one and my D drive (data and most non-OS programs) on the other.

How do I backup track 0 and the MBR of the drive? Is that not included with the full backup of C?

The two "NO NAME" partitions appear to be empty as 100% free space so I dont' think they have ACER recovery software in them.

I down loaded Karen's Replicator and have it set to run for the first time tonight on my D drive (data and other programs) to my second external hard drive. I must say I am quite impressed with how smoothly it seems to flow in setting up the schedules and how quickly the screens change in looking at the help files. It does not slow down the system at all.

It would still be nice to get an answer from Acronis why trying to back up MY DATA with their program (on that particular tab) creates a huge string of error boxes that you can't kill without difficulty. I am curious if anyone else has had difficulty using that part of their program too. Too many weird errors for me to feel a lot of trust in the program.

Ahhh...the good ole days of getting a manual with your computer. The "Users Guide" that is on the hard drive is basically useless. It has very little information and what it focuses on is the very basics of what the icons mean, the mandatory FCC stuff, and how to safely clean your computer. If there is anything more detailed elsewhere on the computer I have not been able to locate it. I'll try F2 next time I reboot.

Thanks for such a detailed and organized response. It was very easy to understand and process!

Good to see progress is being made and glad you have found the information helpful.

Question 1 about MBR and Track 0
Oops you are right. I was thinking of an earlier version of TI when you had to manually click Track 0 and MBR if you weren't backing up a complete disk. According to the Acronis 2009 manual a "partition" backup backs up Track 0 and MBR of the disk the partition was on automatically.

Sorry if the following is telling you what you may already know.
Using Windows disk management terminology according to what you listed you have ONE disk with 5 volumes on that disk. Some of the volumes have drive letters assigned. Some do not. Acronis True Image calls the volumes "partitions" on the "disks".

Here are my disks from Windows Disk Management and what shows up in True Image. As you can see I have five disks, three external and two internal (all labelled so I know what they are)
I have one volume per disk - I did not partition them into volumes or drives.

    Drives.jpg
    ACronis Drive.jpg

I think those volumes on your internal disk are special recovery volumes/drives but are hidden in the normal course of events and accessed when you push the special keys at startup. Someone else with an Acer may know for sure.

Does TI see the volumes without drive letter assigned?

If you just selected C partition you will loose the data on those partitions when you restore. You may not be bothered about that.

One option I forgot to mention is that you can backup the complete internal disk. It would mean you would get the D drive as well but if you have the storage and are not having to do it too often as Replicator is backing up the data files it could be the simplest way to go and the easiest to restore.
Your call of course and what suits you best

You mentioned you are backing up the some non OS programmes as well as data with Karen's Replicator. I assume you mean installed programmes
Of course the programmes will usually have information in the registry in the C drive.

As my C disk backup is done weekly I usually backup the emails in Vista with Replicator daily by backing up the folder C:\Users\NAME\Appdata\Local\Microsoft\Windows Mail\Local Folders\

Finally I see you mention before about not wanting to type the info from disk management programme.

If you push PrtScn [usually Shift PrtScn) a picture of the screen will be put on the clip board. Open the Paint programme from Accessories and go Edit-Paste.
You can then save as a Jpeg and upload it in your posting. Attach the files with manage attachments and then use the Attachments drop down just above and left of the smiles to place them where needed in the posting.

    Hope all goes well

I totally forgot about print screen!

    Attached are my print screens.

    Computer management screen.jpg

    Acronis disk shot.jpg

Do these answer the questions you were asking?

BTW, the ACronis E is is my boot disk that I forgot and left in the CD drive! Sorry about that.

Some programs are installed on my D drive. Those that do not give me an option as to where to install a program to, I was forced to let it install on the C drive. I wanted to keep the OS separate from other programs incase I needed to reinstall the OS but couldn't in those circumstances.

BTW, Karen's didn't run last night...I edited the schedule to pick a different time so as not to run when Acronis was running but got sidetracked and didn't click the last window of "save and close" before I went to bed! :p Can't believe I did that! I'll try again tonight.

    thanks again!

    HI Cindy

I am not experienced on Acer or Secure Zone as I do not use them so maybe someone else could comment.

It looks like you may have created a Secure Zone on your C drive at some stage. You could remove it from within ATI-you have to do it that way from within the programme. That would give you back some space.
The other bit is likely to be the Acer recovery partition I would still believe.

Hi All, quick question (or at least I hope it is quick)...

I found a major reason why my D drive (the partition on my internal hard drive where I try and store all my data) was so VERY full and therefore why my backups to my external drive filled up so fast...Apparently my Acer computer has been doing weekly backups of my entire hard drive since I got the computer a year ago. It has been doing this in zip form.

Some of the zip files I could click on and get them to open automatically. Others, I had to physically tell the free zip program 7-zip to open them and they opened.

But there are a handful that will not open no matter what. It tells me that Access is denied and that it cannot open the file. I have tried to figure out why the access is denied. In Properties, it says that it is unable to display the current owner. I have tried to take ownership of the file but it will not let me, saying, Unable to set new owner, access is denied.

What else can I do to get access to these files? What I have done is deleted all of these backup files that I could (and boy did that free up a TON of space) since I now have at least one backup on my external drives but I would like to clear off these last few as they serve no purpose to leave them on my D drive. I just can't figure out why just a few of these are doing this. The only thing they have in common that I could see is that they were the tail end of separate backups and on the D drive they show a size of 0 bytes (on the external backup copy). The computer let me delete the other files that were in that same backup date...not just last one. (but apparently it had no problem with the last file in all the other backup). I am at a loss.

    Thanks,
    Cindy

You could try making another file with same name as the problem file and backing up that new file and then restoring it over the problem file. That might work.

I'm not sure how to make another zip file with the same name as I didn't make the originals. It is weird how Windows will zip a file but not give you any way to open it. I tried Winzip but it was only a 45 day trial so hence the use of 7-Zip to open it. It seems Windows would include a program to unzip something that it zips. What other free zip program would you recommend?

So anyway...any easy way to do this?

    Thank you,
    Cindy

What is your version of 7-Zip?

I see there was a bug

"the bug in 7-Zip 4.63 was fixed: 7-Zip could not decrypt .ZIP archives
    encrypted with WinZip-AES method".

The latest version is 4.64. Make sure you have that

To make a Zip file you can try to save over the existing file do this

1 Copy two or three photos to a folder

2 Select them all and right click

3 Move the cursor down to 7-zip and you should see it open out to this

6 Click OK and it make the file with the same name.

7 Then copy this new file over the trouble one either by explorer or drag and drop. If it replaces it then delete your file .If not it may be a file permissions thing that is a bit more complicated

I am way behind...I have 4.57...will work on that this weekend. I will then try the file creation ... thank you very much for the detailed instructions.

It has been a comedy of errors...there was the first time that I forgot to "save and close" after changing the start time so it didn't run. Then another time I forgot to plug the external drives back in after creating the screen shots for the disk management that I wanted to copy for these posts. Then I don't know what happened last night but some how Karen's got "exited" instead of minimized and it didn't run again! I have managed to get 3 backups done though and had a problem with my Outlook files. It didn't copy them as the "file was locked". I sent off a request for help from Karen but haven't received a reply yet. I leave my computer on 24/7 with my Outlook up and running 24/7 too. I surely hope it doesn't have to be closed to be able to have it backed up. Any comments on this problem too?

Thank you so much again for all you guys' wonderful assistance... you guys are great!
    Cindy
