Microsoft to let consumers test Windows 7 on Friday

I understand from tomorrow (9th Jan) the beta will be available from here(MS) as a download only. The iso image can then be burnt to DVD before installing.

the servers are overloaded atm thou as you would expect.

 

Downloading it now. D\l speeds are all over the place. Looking at anywhere fron an hour to 7+ hours to complete.

OK;

I was able to download the 32 bit version from a link provided at Neowin.net

The download was not smooth but did complete in about 23 minutes.
I burned the ISO to DVD using Imgburn at 4x.

The DVD booted fine, but installation to a previously wiped and formatted hard drive failed three times, each attempted install terminated with this error message;

"Windows could not collect information for [OS image] since the specified image file install.wim does not exist."

the "help file" applies to Vista.

What now

 

How large is the ISO you downloaded? It sounds like the file didn't download completely.

I'm not sure what browser you downloaded it with, but I know IE and Firefox will assume the download is done if the connection gets dropped halfway through, even if its nowhere close to actually being complete.

 

Don't be too sorry for yourself because you didn't get through, folks. I had 1.65 gigs downloaded when it just stopped (and did not resume). Talk about pissed.

The x86 version of Windows 7 beta iso I was downloading was 2.44 gigs in size.

Actually, I downloaded twice, but the size was different for each and both were different from this latest attempt still in progress which is supposed to total 2.43 GB.

The first download was about 2 GB, the second was 2.68 GB.
Obviously, a problem exists using the link at Neowin as both downloads were from that same link, yet very different in size.

Although the downloads struggled, neither actually stopped until I received notification of a successful download.

I knew something was wrong, but decided to burn both ISOs to DVD. From the DVDs came the error message referenced in post #11.

This latest download attempt seems to be running smoothly, but is taking considerably longer to complete.
I'm taking that as a good sign; the previous two did seem to finish abnormally fast.

ps; I downloaded using IE7.

 

Think my 32 bit finally completed. The iso is 3.15 GB. Have not done anything with it yet. Got other fires to put out right now.

Will the Windows 7 beta install on systems with XP, or only on systems with Vista?

Empty HD if you like. I have it on a HD with two WinXPs, Vista, Ubuntu, two DOS, etc.

PS It also runs (slowly) on a Pentium 4 computer with 384 MB of RAM.

 

So soon after releasing Vista and yet again still not even finishing refining it to acceptable satisfactions for all just yet, this early beta release indicates to me that Microsoft is growing desparate to roll out 7and pick up some lost revenue from the disappointments of Vista.

They also IMO have finally realized that the security market which they have created globally has overtaken both popularity and sales when combined as a single conglomerate of businesses.

The odds as i see it are astronomically against a successful 7 release should they decide to make haste in this matter and repeat another runaway from Vista this time just like they did with Windows 98/Me instead of bringing it FIRST! up to customer's full satisfaction.

A repeat performance in the making. And i can always tell the inevidable outcome of their market simply from the way they been naming these O/S's.

XP Pro AFAIK still will remain the single most best O/S they ever developed as well as the huge global developers base it's attracted with success for both vendors and customers alike.

Does anyone know what the system requirements are for Win7? I'm running XP sp3 at the moment with a GB of RAM and an 80GBHD on a pentium4.

Happily running Windows7 right now . It is much greater than Vista , I think . More complicated than Vista with a lot more feautures but great .
