BACKUP - Issues and Situations Faced So Far and Possible Resolutions…!!! Best Approach.

    Dear All,

I have been a huge fan of ATI and have never used any product after having found this product.

But I have faced many issues and situations always wrt to Acronis and in general to backup and restore process. I am attempting to summarize so that experts here may guide and suggest best approach / practices:

    # Situation One –

First HardDisk (300GB) with two partitions. Partition A (125GB) - Operating System Windows installed with all applications and say 40GB of data. Partition B (175GB) – Data only.

Second HardDisk (100GB) with two partitions. Partition A (100GB) - Operating System Windows installed with all applications and say 40GB of data. Partition B (60GB) – Data only.

Want to copy / clone all data from both hard disks to Third Hard Disk of 1 TB.

An attempt to copy individually folders from first two hard disks and pasting into third hard disk fails as there are so many long file names which give error of long file name and windows aborts copying.

An attempt to create Image through ATI also is not possible as destination (third hard disk) is single partitioned (1TB as one partition only). How to have more than one images from first two hard disks to be cloned to single same third hard disk destination without overwriting…??

I have just listed one situation to see the response and solution suggested.

Then I can based on responses ask more relevant other questions / queries.

Thanks for your patience, time and effort and possible help in advance.

    Regards
    Sunando

For what you want to do, you need to partitioned your 1 TB hard drive first. Next do image backups of each partition on your 1st and 2nd hard drive, then restore each of those partitions on the destination 1TB hard drives.

Clones will not work in your situation, since each clone will overwrite the entire 1TB hard drive.

Image backups of a "bootable" partition will always be bootable when restored, so there really no need to do "clones". But you will have to edit the boot.ini files if you will want to do a dual boot, that's more complicated.

Hi Buddy..First of all thanx for atleast your reply. (Nobody else even bothere dto reply  )

BUT THE REASON I PREFERRED CLONING OVER IMAGING EACH PARTITION is that cloning will ensure that I dont face any errors of long file names but in imaging each partiton can anyone confirm based on their usage whether i face long file name problem...o_O

    Agreed totally.

    PLS respond.

I only recall one post back around the TI9 days about a long filename problem and these were so long they were ridiculous. IIRC they were even longer than Windows said was legal. It doesn't seem to be an issue AFAIK.

Please don't be disappointed of sparse responses.
There are holidays and your thread is just 2 days old.

Ok. I have questions before I can answer:
You have 2 OS. One on each device.
Q1: Do you want to retain both OS for a multi-boot option?
Q2: Do you want to merge the both data partitions to one data-partition? Or should they stay seperated?

That means imaging each partition (as opposed to cloning the entire drive) also overcomes the longfilename problem. Confirm please.

Yes I have two OS one on each.

    1. Yes I wont mind retaining but thats not the need. 1 TB is exclusive for data back up from first two hard disks.

    2. Ideally I would like to merge both the data partions but its ok so long as I can hve data on separate paratitions if I can have all data pulled and safely copied in 1 TB drive.

For databackup only as opposed to systembackup; do we have any powerful software which is better than simple copy paste option and especially is capable of overcoming following two limitations of traditional copy paste software:

    1. Long file names
    2. Aborting in between copy process due to encounteriung longfilename and thereafter no clue what was copied and what was left...??

Thanks again and expect some solid expert advices.

I am sure that us users here will help you. There are I think many experts here but they did NOT write the programs. Here you will find users trying to help each other.

Acronis do post here but not often enough in my view.

If you want extra help from the people who wrote the programs and caused the bugs then use Live Chat.

My experince is that the users here will answer my queries in hours and Acronis will answer my queries in days or never.

So thanks for posting to the forums and thanks to all who post here.

I use filenames that are long when compared to the original DOS 8.3 convention and have had no issues whatsoever but I obviously can't say that every description of a long filename is valid.

You seem to have a big issue with long filenames that doesn't seem to appear in this forum as an issue. If you are having trouble with such names check to see how many sub-folders your files are down. This was a problem years ago with some backup software packages even if the overall filename was within specification. So I suggest you do some testing on your unique situation and see if it works for you. After all, that is all that matters and for the rest of us to address your situation is meaningless - very similiar trying to prove a negative.

You can expect all the expert advice you want but mine is worth exactly what you paid for it! Like jehosophat said, we didn't write the program and are only going on our general knowlege and experience with TI.

    Hello sunandoghosh,

Thank you for your interesting in Acronis True Image

You said that you just want to transfer data from two internal drives to 1 Tb external drive without keeping multiboot, so you can use Acronis True Image "My Data" backup type not "My Computer" for your purposes. Select all data you need from internal drives and backup it to external, then restore created backup archive to that external drive and delete backup.

    Best regards,
