I currently have Registery Mechanic which is due for renewal. I have been looking at RegCure. What is the current opinion?

 

Why do people use reg cleaners? There is NO performance advantage, since registry entries don't slow anything down (unless its a pathological example). Sooner or later you will screw up your system up.

The one case where they might be useful is cleaning up dangerous entries from malware, but that is not really cleaning, its malware removal.

 

You'll find the masochists among us prefer to needlessly jeopardize their systems while the experts consistently warn against them. I'd also suggest you keep an eye on any given "member of interest's" posting history when seeking advice. Along with the ones who offer straight talk, there's your share of bs'ers.

I am currently using Max Registry Cleaner, but I don't know if it is better than RegCure...
Does anyone know what is the best registry cleaner?

 

RegCure is a pain in the Ass it finds the same old keys each and every scan and deletes Sod All!

 

I'm using the 1 Click Maintenance in TU 2008 with no problems at all.I tried the 2009 version and it was messing up my Firefox.

I never touch my registry, I don't do much unistalls but even then, I don't see any performance degradation on a two year old XPx64.

 

One more such myth is software that free up memory,thinking that the system memory manager is stupid.

 

I dont think u needreg cleaner that much if u go back to a fresh image of os now and then.

 

Registry First Aid is my poison of choice. I find it cleans and defrags the registry without any mal-effects. I can't say for certain that it results in better performance but I really believe it does (but then again I believe my car runs better after it's washed)!

I always use RFA immediately after uninstalling software. It finds and removes all of the left-over registry items!

I know of 2 jolly good reg cleaners that are quite "safe" to use...

CCleaner - free

Ace Utilities - a 1-off purchase for a suite of utilities that not only cleans the registry safely but does LOTS of other housekeeping chores, including registry compression/defrag.

 

Ace Utilities has a modified version called System TuneUp which is equally good IMO.
From the developer-"It has a new user-interface and will only work on systems using Windows XP or above."

Seriously though, I use TuneUp Utilities to cleanup files and the reg. While that may or may not improve performance, in the past it has definitely corrected some odd system behavior.

If I remember correctly, in a previous similar thread, you mentioned using Wise Registry Cleaner. I have been happily using it ever since, do you no longer use or recommend it?

I can only recomend CCleaner!!

Btw, rarely -after majoru pdates usually- CCleaner registry gives me some Missing Shared DLLs.

I've found out that If I don't clean those DLLs, PC often won't boot and will get stuck during the progress bar.
The progress bar will freeze in other words.

When I clean with CCleaner all OK! This why it has earned my sympathy
Always solves problems, NEVER caused me one, even slightest.

Ace Utilities hands down...with CCleaner a close second.

Tried a bunch of them and Ace Utilities is the best and the SAFEST IMO. It creates a back-up of the registry entries it cleans and like someone else added....it does much more than just clean the registry.

Highly recommended! Been using it for years now.....not a single issue/problem.

I still use Wise from time to time.

Wise is more "aggressive" than Ace. That is -- Ace tells me the number of registry items that it judges are (a) possibly cleanable, BUT which (b) Ace considers MIGHT be too risky to clean. Ace doesn't list those risky items, so it gives me no choice to screw up, even if I want to.

On the other hand, Wise lists ALL registry items that might possibly be cleanable, & puts them into 2 categories: (1) safe to clean, (2) risky to clean. It allows ME to decide how far I will go in my cleaning efforts.

I use Ace to clean the registry when I don't want to think about what I am doing -- which is most of the time. It is safe to use Ace that way.

I use Wise on those rare occasions when I feel like digging deeper, and thinking about what I am doing. So far I have never yet been burned by doing that.

Fail-safe -- Ace & Wise both make back-ups of registry items before deleting them. Even so, I make an image of my system disk before performing any major surgery on the registry.

 

bellgamin, let's see if I understand this... You shouldn't use Wise unless you're an ace, but you can safely use Ace even if you're not too wise ...correct?

 

bellgamin. Do you use the other tools that come with Ace Utilities and if so how do you find them?
