how is avg antivirus?

your opinions on avg antivirus (not the free version)

i read somewhere that this antivirus deletes a windows file,is this true?

 

yes that was a problem, but i believe it was fixed. and personally ive never like AVG and its detection was never too amazing.

 

My opinion? It would be my last choice......

 

THe current release is bloated. They should have a a service pack out soon that cuts down the fat.

 

IF you are willing to pay For AV there are much better choices and lighter alternatives.

 

And even if you are not willing to pay, there are lighter/better choices. (avast, antivir, rising, comodo, etc..)

 

GUI and featrures are fantastic, realword protection = zero! These guys cant come up with their own tech so they buy everyone elses instead.

Yes, but where is the problem? With AVG you get Ewido and Exploit Prevention Labs Linkscanner

I used AVG for several years. The only real problem I had was when it was doing a scan I couldn't do anything else with the computer.
A couple of monthe ago I switched to Vipre by Sunbelt Software. I couldn't be happier! I feel like my computer has been upgraded. I sense no computer resources being drained by my AV. As far as I can tell it has all the features of AVG.

 

Not according to the reviews of Virus Bulletin and others. It is up there alongside several others.

 

avg paid versions arent to bad.
a few people here have had some issues with it recently.
the only thing i dont really like is that optional toolbar.
since most av companies detect that toolbar as riskware it shouldnt be bundled with an av program.
luckily its optional in the current versions.
service pack 2 of avg 8 is currently in beta.

there is better free and paid av's thou.
avg wouldnt be the last on the list but quite close to last.

 

Asking a question like the one you did on a forum not dedicated to that product is more likely to attract negative opinions,even from people who have never used that product!than positive ones
Ask the same question at the AVG forum(if there is one)and you'll probably get mainly positiv opinions,this is a NOD forum and even though there are sections for other av's etc it is predominantly used by NOD users,guess where their allegience lie:-what I am really saying is such a question will get a different answer depending where you ask it,so best thing is for you to trial the product and form your own opinion

 

almost everyone here is really fast to dump every AV or Suite AVAST< KASPERSKAY, Norton but AVG and TREND MICRO ARE the most persecuted ones so better never ask a question like that

 

lol we dump on AV's that actually arent good, AVG has been horrible in past use for me, never deleted or detected very well.

when did av comparatives become the bible? all av comparatives does is give you a small look at a product, they use only a handful of samples compared to how many malware there is out there and i have used AVG before, and i didnt see anything impressive about it when i compare it to other products. its good to know you probly like to base ur assesment purely on tests and ads saying how good avg is...

 

See just as i said you are talking what you want so i am just out of this discussio. But there is a minimal requirement when two or more people talk about a certain issue
1- talk when informed
2-inform correctly

 

If AVG was as bad as some guys on here are making out to be there would be thousands(make that millions) of trashed PCs about,what with its tendency to delete Windows files and all the malware it lets in,the free version is possibly the most widely used av there is and you don't see the numbers of screwed PCs to support the premis that its as bad as the knockers make out

 

I have been using AVG for about 5 years both pro and free.
When it was 7.5 it was in my opinion the best antivirus program out there.
I beta tested AVG 8.0 and when telling them my complaints and others who have beta tested it, they just did not listen and I feel they pushed the product out a bit too fast. It had mega problems in the beginning and still has some issues with updating, and also with its Web Surfing Protection. I have seen it myself as well as on this forum and other ones i go to, that it is not up to par as it was when it was 7.5.
I am told ( I have not beta tested it yet that sp2 is suppose to clear the problems up. Time will tell.
I have also been beta testing Avira Pro/free
I have found that both catch about the same amount of viruses but Avira seems to catch more trojans than AVG and seems to be more stable. Its Web Surfing Protection (only in the pro version) is great and in my testing it has caught more bad websites than AVG ever had.
The only reason i do not like the free version of Avira is its annoying nag screen, and yes you can fix this but if it does an updated version and replaces the avgnotify.exe you are back to the popups.
The pro version is alot cheaper than AVG 8.0. AVG 8.0 free offers you more than AVira free (it has the web surfing protection- Avira free doesn't) but for $26 you can purchase it which is a great price for a good antivirus program.
Mind you I still put AVG 8.0 free on my clients computers who want a free product as long as it doesn't have problems.If it does and I had to in 3 cases, I put either the free Avira until they cannot stand the nag screen, then i tell them to purchase the pro version.

I am a reseller for AVG and i was the first to jump to sell their product but recently i have been very skeptical given the problems i have seen first hand with it. If they can change my mind with sp2 because i feel AVG was the best out there- then i will go back to selling it. Until I see this, the free goes on or Avira to my clients. I cannot have my clients calling me constantly that they cannot update and i find even after reinstalling the product it doesn't help. I start them on the free version to see if they like it before i go pro on either products, or they trial it for the 30 days before they decide to purchase it.

The old version was lighter.

 

in general old versions of most security products run lighter than newer versions,the newer versions "do" more and as a consequence have more impact on your system,there are exceptions,latest Kav runs lighter than the previous version for one but as a rule that's not the case

 

I think the cause of this is the web scanner
