Busy, frustrated, is NOD32 and something else my solution?

Hi all,

I have my own business with a number of computers scattered at my office and at home. For years I've used a mix of Norton and Trend Micro security suites. But I'm finding that more and more they bog down my computers. I was even hopeful that the new Norton 2009 would solve my problems. It ran fine for awhile but then lately it's been constantly accessing my hard drive with the repetitive message of " . . . working in the background . . ." message. Their support was quick and friendly, but they couldn't help.

Anyway to make a long story short, I've been trying NOD32 Antivirus and I'm impressed with how light it is and the unobtrusive existence. However, I understand it is not a Security Suite. Just wondering how much I'm missing with just having NOD32 Antivirus and not a full blown suite. I'm looking for some firewall protection, spam protection and malware protection (and I really don't know enough about either). So do I need a full suite like ESET Smart Security? Or can I find something light that will work with NOD32 Antivirus and still give me protection against "other" harmful elements?

If I don't sound very clear on what I'm asking, my apologies. I guess in a nut shell I'm looking for the best protection without all the bells and whistles.

The new Norton Internet Security 2009 is fantastic and extremely light on system resources. You want to give that one a shot?

(Because you were talking about just the anti-virus version right?)

 

It depends on your situation. If you're in an office with lots of firewalled routers then you might not need a software one.

Are they used to controlling what apps access the internet? If so, then by all means go for ESS, and the added anti-spam might prove useful. You don't need anything else. Most of the other things advertised in other security suites are marketing gimmicks.

But for the FYI, NOD32 is more than capable of standing by itself.

It is the Norton Internet Security 2009 that's given me the problem. It constantly accesses my hard drive with no let up. I finally removed the program after their support could not resolve the problem.

I don't have any firewalled routers in the office. Also, some of the business computers are laptops which are used on the road. So I prefer a standalone package that can take care of security issues such as viruses, spam, and such.

"Most of the other things advertised in other security suites are marketing gimmicks." - I often wonder how real some of the problems are that are expressed by some security software companies. Some of the defense tools just seem way over the top, to the point I'm thinking my computer will be spending most of it's resources just protecting me from what may not likely happen. If that makes sense.

ESET Smart Security is based on ESET NOD32 Antivirus and provides additional firewall and spam protection. I'd recommend you give it a try to see if it fits your needs.
