    I'm not sure, but these may be US promotions only. At the very least from what I have seen these deep discount promotions involving multiple rebates are offered only through Staples, not through other popular retail outlets like Best Buy, although these stores do run sales on various Symantec products regularly. You can check the Staples ads online at www.staples.com for details.

    The rebates are now in the form of a prepaid Visa card, which is used like a gift card. I preferred the rebate checks, but that is how they do it now.

    I am currently trialing VIPRE and Sunbelt Personal Firewall together. (SBPFW is also offered at $9.95 if you buy VIPRE). I find that although I agree that VIPRE does not have the smallest footprint in memory, it does seem the fastest AV I've ever used and trust me, I've used a lot.

    The installer however suggests a 'medium' setting which may be why it is fast. Faster computer = lower protection.

    So far SBPFW has passed the usual leak tests (with proper settings) and VIPRE has passed the Eicar test, so that is good enough for me as I am not a 'dangerous surfer'.

    One feature I would like is Antispam which is in their iHatespam product (which I think is expensive).

    It is interesting that Sunbelt seems to be resisting the 'Suite' concept, but I bet if they combined these products into one interface, it would make a nice 'Suite".

    I have until midnight tonight to make up my mind to buy VIPRE. But at $ .0273 a day, what do I have to lose? And, Sunbelt offers 30 day money back guarantee.

    Does it seem stable? What is the memory footprint? Maybe I will give it another shot.

    It is running quite stable on my machine. Velocity Micro, Intel Core 2 2700, 4 Gig RAM, Evga nVidia SLI series 6 motherboard running WinXP Home SP3.

    If footprint is important to you, I'm running a deep scan right now and SBAMSvc.exe is taking about 64 meg, and between 36-50% CPU. Like I said, Sunbelt claims fast but when they say 'low on resources', I'm not so sure. But I'm willing to give up on footprint if I don't actually 'feel' it.

    One thing would be nice in the PFW, a 'game mode'.

    Just checked it. Not scanning.

    SBAMSvc = 8,416k
    SBAMTray = 36,284k (!)

    Remember I'm also running SBPFW so I also have:

    SbPFSvc = 57,348k
    SbPFLnch = 6,072k
    SbPFCI = 29,068k

    Kind of a little piggy if you ask me.

    That's kind of how I remembered it. Not as light as people say.

    You prefer AVG (as in your signature) that recently deleted a crucial Windows file (maybe that didn't happen to you) ? :rolleyes:

    VIPRE is obviously imperfect. Whether it's light or not obviously depends on one's hardware and software setup. They are probably hyping VIPRE more than it deserves, but which vendor doesn't ? They have never lied to me.

    I don't know what it does at startup, but that McAfee software of mine, together with svchost.exe really knows to keep the computer busy (very high % of CPU utilization) at startup. For a couple of minutes at least.

    ram wise not as light as Nod but no performance inpact, I think that's where they get the light from...also on my laptop combined with the sunbelt firwall it keeps out my wireless connection for at least 2 minutes or so , not what I desire no matter what the price...However it is a good start maybe next year after some revisions...

    I missed the Blackfriday deal as I wasn't near my computer for the whole day. But what about the problem when you open a folder with lots of files?

    It was still there about 2 months ago, when I gave it a spin. Don't know if that bug has been removed later.

    i hate Avg also for not being able to uninstall and saying the crazy thing-Avg 7 is in your computer please uninstall AVg 7 to be able to install avg 8 .
    i hate it very much. changing my signature too
    but i believe evry vendor should be loyal to its costumers

    Here are my quick initial impressions since installing Vipre on Friday.

    Memory and resource usage is lighter than I experienced with NOD32 3.0 and Eset Smart Security. Usage is about equal to what I experienced with Avast free home edition, which is what I was using up until Friday after dumping MS Onecare. I am running Vista Home Premium SP1.

    Scanning most definitely is light on resources and quick on my Intel dual core laptop with 2GB ram. No problems or lock ups so far. I have not experienced any notable slowdowns.

    Here is one thing I found interesting and the main reason for my post. Up until today, virus definitions were from 11/26. Vipre kept telling me I was up to date and manual updates (no errors) did the same. Finally, I noticed a balloon message today indicating my definitions had just updated. The update for today is marked ver. 2430 11/27/2008 12:00PM.

    There has been some kind of server problem this weekend with Sunbelt. (perhaps due to the Black Friday Special). I, like many other users, was unable to update risk definitions for the last day and a half, and when I was finally able to update today, I got the same definitions date, 11/27. Well, that's 3 days old! A lot of nasty things can happen in 3 days. I would hope Sunbelt realizes that Black Hats don't take Holidays and weekends off like they do!

    I also hope that this risk definition 'lag' doesn't continue with Sunbelt during weekends and Holidays, as this would be unacceptable for a software 'protection' company.

    Update - My definitions went up to ver. 2431 "11/30/2008 1:50 PM" after my earlier post. So, there apparently were no definition updates prepared between 11/27 and 11/30.
