Antivirus for linux with protection?

    I`m considering giving Ubuntu a ride for a while, is there any (possibly free) av for Linux with protection?

    You really don't need one, av-scanners running under Linux are mainly for catching Windows malware.

    Yes but I`m "a bit" paranoid and don`t want to have any chance to get infected.:D

    If all you have is Linux running, you can forget about being "a bit paranoid" and just trust... there's basically no chance of anything happening. If you have Win machines networked then you may want one. ClamAV will probably work.

    Seriously, I`m thinking giving up on answering hundreds of popups and I don`t want any app like returnil. I just want an av in my tray icon, which will eventually alert if there is some virus:) .

    I understand you my Albanian friend. However there is no need for such programs on a Linux workstation. You can rely on Ubuntu's safety, also the programs are hardened by AppArmor to protect them from possible threats. If you are very very very paranoid, use CentOS with SELinux cranked up :D

    There is no need.
    With ubuntu you cannot login as graphical root.
    if something needs root it will give you a prompt.
    just use the bultin updator to ensure you have the lastest patchs for software and the kernel and enjoy.

    There are lots of free AVs for linux. ClamAV is free software, and free of charge for everyone to use.

    There are also commercial AVs for Linux that are provided free of charge for personal use: F-Prot, Avast, AVG...

    It`s incredible how much several years of windows usage affect someone`s mentality, isn`t it? ;d

    Well, I guess I`ll have to scan my friends` USBs manually.:D
    Wait, there is one, Vexira, but apparently isn`t free, and the ubuntu warez community isn`t very big:p (just joking).
    BTW:Is there any risk running wine? I mean, do the exe get opened with wine automatically, and is there any way to prevent this from happening?

    Instead, you should rather keep on eye on the red update-indicator in the systray. Whenever there are security updates available for Ubuntu, you install them. This way you keep your computer safe.

    Instead of all the flashy green "You're protected!" symbols we all love from Windows :p
    Wine is never auto-launched, but it can be setup to launch Windows apps when you doubleclick them in Nautilus (the file browser).

    Or you can use the manual way from command-line:

    # wine someWindowsApp

    hahaha, thanks. Good for wine. I don`t think I`ll run many programs under wine anyway, Linux seems to have a wide variety of programs.

    Thanks but it's only saying how to install avast, then it tells about automatic updating, nothing about protection.:doubt:

    As a Linux developer, all I can tell you is - frankly don't waste time on this... If you want more security, then SELinux, AppArmor, hardened toolchain (PIE/SSP), PaX, GRSecurity etc. are the way to go, not realtime AV apps.
