i believe macs come with a built in firewall(correct me if im wrong) but considering macs are less prone to infections, id says just the default mac firewall should do.

No i don't use Avast but i can recommend another combo>

But you could try to use iAntivirus from PCTools wich is free as well!
www.iantivirus.com < there you find it.

And regarding the firewall on Macs i would recommend using Littlesnitch.
not free, but very good protection.
    You find Littlesnitch here:http://www.obdev.at/products/littlesnitch/index.html

Thanks SweX, but I would prefer to use something that is more known and tested.

If I am not mistaken, Avast for Mac would only detect specific Windows virus coming in via mail, so it would only be good for removing those. It wouldn't detect any virus written specifically for Mac.

    Hi, VLK!

If I'm not mistaken you work for Avast. Is that right?

So, can Avast detect both Windows and MAC viruses?

And does all the shields available for Windows also work on MAC?

    TIA,
    Scirious.

Thats very good news then VLK, if Avast for Mac can detect stuff like Rootkits etc. How bout the Linux version? If it can detect Unix based malware I would be really interested in using it, the problem currently is that there is no x64 version of the Avast .deb that I can see on the site.

Go pick up something that's free (if there's anything), basically running similar stuff on Unix/Linux/BSD based systems is IMNSHO a nice waste of system resources and money...

Avast for Linux is free and being on demand, it hardly can be considered a waste of resources.

Yes of course, we're not such ignorants that we would release a Mac/Linux AV product that wouldn't detect Mac/Linux malware.

So of course, the Mac product does detect Mac malware and the Linux product does detect Linux malware.

    vlk,

a x64 deb please or the source file to compile it, I am happy with Ubuntu's relatively secure world but adding Avast would make me even happier.

    Thanks for your reply VLK!

Just one more question that isn't clear to me. When you say that the Mac product does detect Mac malware and the Linux product does detect Linux malware, they also detect Windows malware, right?

    TIA,
    Scirious.

Of course. The signatures are the same on all systems. Windows version of avast! will also detect Mac and Linux malware if you get one to pass through your system.
