    So glad i am not running it now. just thinking what the hell are they doing with their stuff here. I wished i never bought it :D :D :D :D :D :oops:

    tried avg a couple times and got rid of it immediatly each time and always said i knew i tried it already what was i thinkning using it again.. its just my opinion but i have never liked avg luckily i didnt buy it like you did.. and im glad i didnt now

    Not only did I tweak those 2 functions from never happening (allowing myself the luxury of manually updating & scanning at a time of my choosing), I also eliminated the LinkScanner and Web Search features as well. My AVG Free 8.0.175 runs just like the old 7.5 did, flawlessly.

    BTW, in this dutch newspaper, Paul Jansen of AVG reports
    that:

    .......Besides AVG, according to Jansen also customers of GData and NOD 32 where affected because these firms use the same virusdefinitions.

    Is this trueo_O?

    If I understand your answer correctly, they make unique, and separate virusdefinitions.

    De Hollander, NOD32 in their Compare Antivirus Software page shows AVG dead last as far as Missed In-the-Wild Viruses. So it's hard to believe that ESET is using the same definitions as AVG, notwithstanding the article. I could be wrong.

    Hello De_Hollander,

    That is not true. ESET writes its' own virus definitions and does not use competitors definitions. The AV industry shares information on new malware and threats. We do this to better protect our customers. To reassure though, ESET creates it's own virus definitions.

    Of course, that's called a "marketing". If you look carefully at the graph, it is aggregating data over last 10 years. But who cares how AVG performed 5-10 years ago with totally different AV engine? It's like counting apples and oranges together. It's just all fruit, right?

    GoblinPP, assuming (and you know what happens when one assumes) that ESET's AV engines also changed during those 10 years and IF that fact was included as part of their equation, then the comparison would be the same. Apples vs Apples. However, if ESET only compared their present engine with others during that 10 year span, then I would agree with you being deceptive advertisement.

    Marketing makes the world go around and every company paints the same picture in different colors. Take a look at AVG's statement The new AVG 8.0 - the only real-time security solution. Really? Just because AVG added a LinkScanner, does not make their software the ONLY solution. What about the other AV vendors whose security programs work in real-time? What about add-ons to browsers that provide the same security protection? Same picture, different color.

    I use AVG (minus the LinkScanner & Web Search features), but I responded to De Hollander's posting of the Dutch article which seemed not to be factual; later confirmed by Rmuffler. I'm not sticking up for ESET. If you are happy using any software and it does the job for you, then marketing is just hyped-up wording to suit a vendor's perspective.

    Another question about this issue . Is it normal that costumers should be at least notified about any troubles that is caused by the vendor. They have our e-mail and they know we are their costumers and we need some apologies .

    gery, in this case, we were lucky that AVG posted something in their Free forum because it sure was severe enough to warrant that info but it's my experience that most companies, even with our email addresses on record, don't send out apologies. Many do post the findings in their own forums, when issues spring up, and I guess that's the best we can hope for. :(

    I wouldn't be surprised at all, that a lot of programs use each others definitions ....look at a lot of industrial products, coming out of one big factory and labeled with their own names. We're all being fooled, more than we will ever know!

    This is not true and the quote was not correct. The three AV products do not share definitions. GData uses 3rd party engines but none of them is from AVG or ESET (NOD32)
