o_OIs there anyway to keep track of what message page i'm on or where I am when I follow links back and forth? There is just so much to read and study here that when I get sidetracked following some other thing I sometimes have trouble getting back or even remembering where I was.
Example: I open a (Topic) and start reading. Then one of you most excellent guys says to check this or that, I do that, and then find myself getting in to deep. I try to get back to my original start place and can't tell what page of a topic I'm on so I can come back later. I'm just a little confused. I'm thirsty for Knowledge. Anybody have a drink handy?

    Hi Thirsty Val ;),

Its nothing new problem and I bet we all face it.. here how I try to minimise the confusion.
I keep the original page as one. If there is some link to check or anything I do a Ctrl+N which gives a duplicate of the original file. Now I work on that page going to links or checkin pages keepin the original untouched and for having looks while reading the links and matching and learning points

    thx

    Hi, Valkyri001

You can right click on a link, and click on Open in New Window, do this in the links, and your original page is the one nearest to the start button.
Hope this is of some helps.

I use the back button a lot too. Another thing is to click on history icon and pick a page until you find the one you want.........I use this when I've dug pretty far ahead from the original post or thread that I started my journey from.

The back button sometimes gives me that --Page expired-- thing.
    :rolleyes:History!!!!
    Thats the ticket!
o_ONow all I have to do is remember where to remove the history stuff before I start. Or does that happen automatically, oh man now you got me thinking again and thats dangerous!

I used to have the same problem. Now I use mozilla and open each thread in a new window and open any links from that thread in a new tab within the window. Works for me.

I'm with TheQuest on this one (and it's also been recommended to me by a couple of the mods) -- force the link to open in a new window, so your original's still sitting there. That right-click context menu is one way to do it in IE, or hold down Ctrl while you left-click normally, either one has the same effect. And just close the second window when you're done with it.

I find it particularly handy for following the links from those "Moved" notes, since sure as heck I'll never remember where I started from. And yes, the Back sometimes does give you that "page expired" thing plus you're got to reload the page.

    You can get Mozilla here

    http://www.mozilla.org/

You might want to have a look at FireFox while you are there, built on the Mozilla platform, but lighter and meaner and does not include an e-mail client.

if you are using IE hold down the SHIFT key while pressing the link, it will force open a new window for you. but i suggest you try firefox because it is lighter and faster, after installing firefox try downloading the TAB-Browser extension. with it you can just lock the original page and open each link in a new tab.

    goodluck!

:D ;)Yes gentlemen! I don't want to sound wrong here!
Not just ready to learn all over yet. I like the right click idea for "new window", thats been a very big help for me, now I just have to remember to use it. Getting better though.

:) You can also download Opera 7.23 from http://www.opera.com/download/.

Opera is great for finding what you need and where you've been. It has two back buttons in one. The little one gives you a drop down menu of every page you've been to--just highlight and click. If you need it to be current then simply reload/refresh it.

I use Opera every day. I'll never go back to IE. I'm spoiled now. LOL :D

There are a few things here:
sending MS error reports, there is a setting to avoid that sending, anybody?
If you have that many, could it be something in the settings?

I have in the IE browser too the links i click on in the forum open in a new window, so the same like others, i close it when done with that so i'm back in my original place. Also i try to look on top of the page to remember where i was and name of the thread.
History and back back back clicking work for me too.
I made a notapad shortcut in my taskbar nice and close to the startbutton so always at hand, so easy to copy a few important links in that and save it, while it's easily overwritten or deleted, whatever needed. Saves lots of writing and yellow notes around the monitor which you lose anyway after a while.

If you really find a page very important you can also somewhere in a free area on it rightclick and make a shortcut, which will be placed on your desktop, if you don't want to use the favorites.

    Cleaning history and caches:
If you use ZApro it has an option to clean all caches, history and logs as much as you tell it to do or after reboot. Else in IE Tools > Options > and clean out all you like to be cleared.

So many tips, we all can learn from each other! :)

:)Hi Jooske! I think I'm doing that. This is where I think it is.
    Internet Options under Tools...
Advanced Tab=>scroll to Security=>then check box to Empty temporary internet files when browser is closed.
I also check the space it will allow for saving them, I use 700MB(no particular reason for that), but I have the days to keep at 4, that way I think it is helping me keep it clean.
    If I understand you correctly?
About the sending thing I'm sure I can find that again as I do remember turning it ON. I'm not afraid to bug M$ now and then for fixes. And I figure if they get the messages, it can only help them make a better product.

One other thing you could add to your habits is running Disk Cleanup after closing your browser. Even if you've set Internet Options to clear the cache when you exit, the Cleanup often will still find some odds & ends of temporary net files afterwards -- typically a couple of K, but I've seen it up around 50K once in a while.

;)Yhanks for the reminder MikeBCda! Haven't done that in awhile. I started doing the dump after I noticed over 7,ooo files in there once.
Do you find it helpful to dump cookies sometimes, and if so how often?

I generally don't lose too much sleep over cookies -- I let Cookie Pal look after most of the work for me. I do have and use SpywareBlaster, but turned off its tracking-cookie protection and just use it for ActiveX protection which is a lot more important.

Generally I try to exclude cookies I know are strictly for merchandising, and hang on to the ones for things like registrations, preferences, etc. What the heck, with extremely rare exceptions the worst that cookies can do is bump up the volume of spam directed to you -- and 99 percent of that never reaches me anyway, thanks to my ISP's quarantine system.

;)I also rely heavily on my ISP's system of filtering, not sure thats as good as what I've been getting here, but as I've heard a lot, layer, layer, layer.
Oh, and that Llama thing, Llama's are natural enemies of wolves. If you get my drift.
    Thanks for all your input.

I'm new here but not a newbie - use MS's IE/OE. Can't help but add my 2¢ too. I use Ctrl-N to open a new window and Alt-Tab to show all open windows - then tab to the window I want to return to.

Came here to get info/advice on whether/what to use for firewall SW in addition to my Netgear RP614 router.

Now you have me wanting to try some other browzer and 2 were recommended in this thread ~ Mozilla/Firefox and Opera. *puppy*

Is there a topic/thread that evaluates other browzers?

Here is a thread that talks about Firefox

    https://www.wilderssecurity.com/showthread.php?t=22602

The thing to remenmber about Firefox is that it is beta software. Before you dismiss it though, a lot of people use it, myself included. that have not had any problems at all.

Other than that I think you would be best off to do a search around and read whatever you can. Then make up your mind. There are a lot of different browsers out there, it really comes down to what you perfer and what features you can live with/without.
The same also goes for e-mail clients.
I have also used Mozliia, which is also very good, but I did not want the intergrated e-mail appliciation that came with it, hench the swith to Firefox.
