I have about 1 week left before my Kaspersky Internet Security 2009 license runs out and I'm not sure if I should RENEW for another year and stick w/ KIS or maybe try a different suite (or a combination firewall + AV)?

Is Kaspersky better than NIS 2009, Comoda IS 3.5, VIPRE, NOD32, Dr. Web??

I'm not sure what I should choose. I'm looking for something light, fast and of course will protect my system from malware and viruses.

I value the opinions/insight of the knowledgable members here and I would appreciate some feedback.

    Thanks.

It's usually worthwhile to take a more measured view of what's actually asked. The policy was created to prevent constraint free questions of a "which is better?" from clogging the forum via a flood of content free "X is best!!!" responses with absolutely no analytic thought applied in the development of the answer.

The question posed above has some targets and constraints applied by the questioner. It should not automatically devolve into a content free thread. Whether or not that does occur really depends on the quality of the discourse offered by members responding to the thread.

The discussion is on..., unless of course it devolves into one of those classic "A vs. B" shouting matches that seem all to easily engaged.

    Hello birdman,
what you have got to ask is the following:
any problems with kis2009 on your system?
have you got infected while using kis2009?
is there anything you dont like about kis2009?

if it works well on your computer and you like it then keep it. simple as that.
its nice to try other software but if its not broken why fix it?

I like AntiVir Premium Suite or AntiVir AV + Comodo firewall. AntiVir is not very heavy on the system though I do notice slightly slower browsing with the Web AV turned on. NIS is also light with good detection. If you prefer your AV to be great in detection, you'd be fine staying with KIS. If something lighter is more important, try AntiVir or NIS.

    Yes, yes. yes! Agreed.

If, on the other hand, you'd look forward to some fun by trying out different AV's - by all means take a look at some trial versions of different products. First make an image of your current setup (you do have imaging/rollback solution, right?*), and begin experimenting with other AV's or suites.

*If you don't have imaging/rollback solution, stick with KIS and put your time to better use to get one (Paragon, FD-ISR, Acronis, etc.)

If you're using 2009 and its giving you no major problems, I'd definitely stay with Kaspersky. Its still very much a top-tier product, and the real key for any of them is how it works on YOUR rig.

If you have something that's working, and is known to be one of the better products, no reason to switch.

maybe you should "try" Avira and see if it fit your requestion's, and when you try the free 30 day trial if you liked it then it's your choice if you buy it or Renew Kaspersky.

    Good Luck:thumb:

I've noticed that KIS 2009 has slowed down my browsing a bit and shutdown takes longer than usual. No my system has never been infected while using Kaspersky.....then again it hasn't been infected in several years while using other security suites as well.

Nice. That's exactly what I did. Using FD-ISR...I installed a trial version of Norton Internet Security 2009 on a secondary snapshot. Thus far I'm really liking what I see from Norton (whom I swore off a few years ago). The suite is super fast and light (about 2/3 fewer mem usage than KIS 2009) and the system start-up and shutdown has noticeably improved as well.

The main positive is that my internet/browsing speed is back to normal now.

I gotta admit....I am beyond shocked. I still can't believe that this is a NORTON software. Wow!

I'm gonna use it for a few more days and if all goes good....I'm making the switch.

Both r very good products if u didn't find any prob while using KIS than i would sugget to renew ur license as for memory usage if u have enough RAM than high consumption of memory should not b the case....

    Birdman,

Expanding somewhat on the issues mentioned above....
    • You need to have a clear sense of precisely what you are willing to tradeoff, the limits in specific traits that's you're weighing against one another, and how you'll weight those different traits in striking the overall performance balance that appropriate for you. By the way, most/all the product you mention provide decent protection to any user (I've not personally tried all of them - hence my one caveat of most/all).
    • Too many focus on "detection statistics" without taking a moment to even reflect on their personal exposure profile or other traits that could be germane to the user experience. All the products you've listed (and many others) will protect your system from malware and viruses. You can look at reputable challenge tests, there are many around, and see that detection does differ between these options in those static challenge tests. However, before latching onto a specific solution.
    • Take a moment to really understand what you are trying to articulate when you say light or fast. An easy proxy for light could be total RAM footprint, but is 30 vs 60 MB of RAM being consumed really that critical on a 1-2 GB system?
    • Have you tried to adjust the configuration of KIS to enhance the light/fast trait you're searching for? On home systems where I've installed KAV/KIS, I've not installed specific modules (e.g. Web AV, Anti-Phishing, Anti-Banner, etc.) to help achieve this objective. Too many users switch products when a simple exercise in configuration optimization is really all that is needed.
    • As you've already seen, this is a dynamic market. Old impressions may not be relevant to current versions. It is really important to test the performance of the current version on your machine, using the complement of applications that you'll typically employ.
I could go on, but I think the point is made.

Not installing the Web AV in KIS doesn't leave a system more vulnerable? I know there have been discussions on this topic before but I am still unsure.

I'm using KIS 7 ( I didn't upgrade at KIS 2009 ). As antivirus, I think that Kaspersky is the better choice you can do. As fw, you surely know that at the first you should have also an hardware firewall, under the sw fw.

But I think that all the all-in- one suites with HIPS features are very different from a real dedicated and specialized HIPS software, as SSM, RTD, Malware Defender, DW....are. So if you want to enhance your security I say that you have to install a real HIPS indipendent from the av/fw.

Moreover not always fast and light run with best security.

    More vulnerable in principle? Yes.

However, that incremental increase in vulnerability is one I really don't mind given the enhanced user experience. Let's be absolutely clear - there's a risk/security benefit balance that must always be struck. Too many users focus all too much effort in addressing real and hypothetical risks without ever assessing what the net benefit is or whether there are other very real downsides occurring as the risk is increasingly decreased. Those security benefits don't come free and, in some cases, I feel that they are simply not worth added the cost to the user experience, particularly when other measures can be used to accomplish much the same result at a much lower net cost.
