NIS 2009 Uninstall Issues

    I have been using NIS 2009 along with DefenseWall on my wife's laptop. Seems to be a great combination. Very light and whatever NIS misses DW is likely to pick up.

    Years ago, I had Norton Internet Security on my PC and I had major problems uninstalling so I thought I better try to uninstall NIS 2009. I ran the uninstaller and rebooted and then used the removal tool and rebooted again. After that, no internet connection even without a firewall. I did not spend much time tying to fix it because I just used an FDISR archive to get back to normal. Maybe I should have uninstalled in safe mode.

    I am going to give it another try but was wondering if others had any uninstall issues?

    No any problem on uninstalling NIS2009:)

    I had no problems with Norton uninstalls after using the removal tool also, but one never knows with these "big boys"...... anything is possible.... and even likely....

    I had a clean uninstall without using the uninstall tool. The uninstall tool by itself can cause problems with all sorts of stuff. Besides the uninstall process has really been improved in the 2009 versions.

    I have had to uninstall NIS 09 - Once!
    That was after...
    A problem with my Laptop .. Ended up with a Start Up Repair :argh:
    And 2 System restores :'(
    When I finally got the laptop going again... NIS 09 was completely - Belly Up! :rolleyes:

    Even though NIS 09 was broken...
    I was still able to uninstal the normal way .. ( Programs and Feature - Vista )
    Then I used the - Norton Removal Tool
    Then I deleted a couple of left over folders
    As I knew I was going to be Re-Installing - NIS 09 ... I didn't bother going down the CCleaner Route.
    Had I been installing a different version of NIS ... ( e.g. Going from NIS 08 To NIS 09 )
    Then I would have also used - CCleaner ;)

    Thank God!
    I didn't have any problems after uninstalling - NIS 09 :)

    Re-Installing...
    The Only Problem I had Was....
    For some strange reason NIS 09 failed to turn Windows Defender - OFF o_O
    I had to turn it off myself!

    Warning!
    After uninstalling any NAV, NIS or N360
    And...
    After using the Norton Removal Tool
    You should always check...
    1/ Device Manager
    The NRT has been known for removing things like Card Readers and DVD Drives :eek:
    2/ Media Center
    Especially if you have Intel Viiv :rolleyes:
    Note!
    I only started noticing these problems...
    When Symantec made changes to the NRT ( I think it was last October )
    And with the Uninstalling of the 2008 Range of Norton software ( e.g. N360 v2 and NIS 08 )
    So Far...
    I have Not noticed these problems with uninstalling - NIS 09 :)
    However!
    It's something to be aware of.
    Just In Case! ;)

    Thanks for the replies. Before deciding on NIS 2009 I will try another uninstall without using the uninstall tool.

    I do like how this runs on my PC...just concerns from previous Norton experiences make me not trust it too much.

    Can I ask 2 Questions Please...

    1/ Do you think DefenseWall had anything to do with your problematic uninstall of NIS 09 ?
    To Be Honest...
    I don't even know what DefenseWall is :oops:
    I presume it's some kind of security software.
    Does it have - Real Time Protection ?
    knowing that having different kinds of security software... They Don't Always Play Nice :(
    I Just Thought I'd Ask! :doubt:

    2/ Did you just use the - Norton Removal Tool ... Without uninstalling the Normal Way - First ?
    If So...
    Perhaps that's what caused the problem :doubt:
    In The Past - With other Norton software ( e.g. N360 v2 ) ... I've tried - Both Ways!
    e.g.
    a) Normal Way .. Then .. Norton Removal Tool
    b) Just the.. Norton Removal Tool

    However!
    In the end...
    I have come to the conclusion...
    It's better to uninstall the Normal Way First ( If Possible! )
    Then use the - Norton Removal Tool ;)

    Note!
    As you know.. I have only ever uninstalled NIS 09 - Once!
    And that was Via..
    The Normal Way First ... Then ... The Norton Removal Tool

    So If you did uninstall NIS 09 with just the Norton Removal Tool...
    Maybe that's something to think about :doubt:
    Look out for other people that have uninstalled with just the NRT .. See if they had any problems :(
    And if you decide to stick with NIS 09 ...
    Perhaps try uninstalling the Normal way First - Next Time ;)

    Yes, it's a real-time security software. But, I really doubt it has any relations to NIS uninstallation problems because:
    1. In case if uninstall was running untrusted, it just couldn't uninstall NIS at all (drivers, executables, folders,...).
    2. In case of trusted uninstallation, everything should work as usual.

    The problem is definitely on NIS side.

    You were extremely quick - Replying to my post.

    I'm not saying the problem was caused by DefenseWall.

    I Was Simply Questioning...
    Could the problem have been caused.. By trying to use the 2 things - NIS 09 and DefenseWall .. Together!

    As I said...
    So..
    I certainly wasn't putting the blame on - DefenseWall

    Just Asking A Question!

    Here is what I did:

    - Ran regular uninstaller
    - Rebooted
    - Ran removal tool
    - Rebooted

    i realized right away that my laptop had lost internet access. When another reboot did not work I just restored from an FDISR archive.

    I have been looking on the Norton forum and have seen Norton employees suggesting to run the regular installer followed by the removal tool twice with reboots in between each process. I am generally leery of software that is hard to get rid of.

    I would be very surprised if DefenseWall caused any problem with the uninstall.

    From what you've said...
    There's certainly nothing wrong, in the way you uninstalled NIS 09 ;)

    The only thing I can think of now...
    Maybe the Norton Removal Tool - Removed something to do with your Internet.
    The same way as it once removed the 15 in 1 Card Reader - From My Desktop Computer :(
