    Hi,
What do you see in your logs ?
You may need to enable additional logging (temporarily) to get a better picture of what is happening, but it sounds like it might be a useful thing to do in this case

I've done a bit more exploring and ascertained that what is happening is that the alert window is somehow hidden or off screen. I can see it in the Alt-Tab bar but cannot tab to it. Then after the default timeout the application starts up, but the setting is naturally not remembered.

I've found a much more serious second bug, for which I can't find a workaround. I'm writing a separate post about it.

I have found a second more serious bug in GSS 1.420

On my laptop (Fujitsu, Win XP SP3, Avira Antivir) the kernel driver prevents hibernation. The "preparing to hibernate" screen appears for a few seconds and then the computer goes back to normal fully on mode. There are no alert screens and no log entries (in fact the log is completely cleared).

Unlike the previous bug, I have not found any way of working round this one.
If anyone knows a setting that will enable hibernation I would be most grateful for the info. Until then I am regretfully forced to revert to version 1.110 :'( .

    orlp,
I would suggest selectively disabling protection for the Default item until it works and then increase the logging to see what program is being invoked and give it explicit permissions

I have had the issue before where other windows were on top of the alert but it has not happened to me for a while. I found the best way to make the alert visible in these cases was to minimise the open windows that were likely to be on 'top' of it until I could see the alert dialog. If you wanted to and have not done so already collecting more details in the logs would give you another avenue to get rid of this instance of the problem

There are actually no windows on the screen when this happens, except a tiny pop-up meny from the launcher. The alert screen is just somehow inaccessible.

However, I can't investigate further since the second bug (preventing hibernation) has forced me to revert to version 1.110:'( .

    orlp,
If you want to give it a try with the newer version at some stage you do at least have my suggestions to give you a starting point

I uninstalled GSS 1.420 and reinstalled it and this bug went away. It seems to have been something that went wrong in the installation.

I have some more information that may be helpful in dealing with this bug.
It turns out that PowerPro uses a hidden window to launch applications. Its own menu popup (which is tiny, much smaller than Appdefend's query window) remains visible. Even if this popup is the only thing visible on the screen, Appdefend's window does not appear. Could it be that somehow Appdefend is inheriting the hidden attribute from the launcher?

I think we really need to stop living in a dream world, its bad enough Jason is, as much as I love his work and all that he has achieved with his products, I think its time we faced reality.

I really think the whole thing for Jason has been to much work to cope with for one guy! So its time we all let go and moved on as theres not much chance of any of his products reaching completion, theres other HIPS out there for us to move on too, as much as I still love AppDefend and RegDefend its time to move forward.

I really wish Jason all the best for the future, he has given me many years of joy and great protection, but I feel and urge others to move on like so many of us have been doing :'(

    hugs to all,
    Fluffy

Softwares outhere are too much cost compared to its worth, like winxp for almost 200usd; so we only pay for most innovative softwares like Jason's. Why? Most coders do software with all api libraries bult-in ready outhere with no secure-code ready and bloated; as to opposite, all materials of Jason has been doing from scratch to build total brandnew expandable-secure code libraries, is that right? Can you can find one like those? and only for some mb in size file? For GSS, searching optimal of GSS can do 40K entries search in factor of seconds, any outhere can reach that par?

I still await for the final release of GSS I already paid for.

No surprise. This has been going on for over three years. Jason would show up for a month or two and then disappear for awhile.
