    Hi

Could Online Armor (Free) and DriveSentry become the end all in PC Security?
They both seem to cover a lot of ground. Just your thoughts. Please no flames.

I love DS, but it isn't again a complete HIPS. I say: DS + Comodo fw/hips: I use them in a pc and is all right. Naturally, a virtualising or a sandboxing software in adding is not a bad idea.

I like CFP v3 also, but the Run Safer option in OA free for my browser session seems good. I guess either would be good.

True. Very true. But I'm trying to find a cheap security solution that is secure.

Just a note though, if you game online which happen to use gameguard, both drivesentry and OA is incompatible with it.

Thanks for that tidbit. I do game online only with BF2 and Crysis Wars but I have never used gameguard.

Golden Bullet? How bout lead BB.

Come on people, we all know there isnt a Golden Bullet as much as I wished. Go with your Silver software and be happy. I keep telling you that the margin from top to bottom used to be measured in miles, now it is inches.;)

also IceCube, I wasnt trying to be rude because it is a good question. The new OA is a great product and DS may be, , but a good virtualization or reimaging software and/or AV or Suite, is really as about as good as you can get right now.

I was only trying to get a feel for DS with OA. I'm using Avira Free and love that AV but I thought maybe DS could be a little more well rounded in the AV department. I appreciate all the comments. That is why I post here.

Spamhooker + happyhooker = potential instability such as slowdowns, freezes, BSOD etc.

I do not think there will ever be a end to all security solution.IMO its all about the $green$ But I do think Suite type security cover more area of computing and privacy or identity theft prevention being the most importance.Just my .02

Once I loved DS but nowadays I'm even too lazy to test new versions. It doesn't offer anything to me. Yes I have "Pro" license :D

Well I reckon I've got a "Diamond Encrusted Platinum Bullet" in my Sandboxie/Returnil/Ghost Images setups.;)

Not to mention the ½ dozen or so spare drives I can plug/unplug as to what I feel like using.o_O

You may find some very good security packages but the "golden bullet" doesn't exist, at least not in the form of a security app/package. The closest you can get is an OS whose components are all "read only", and only the "read only' processes that are part of that OS can run. No execution of anything in cache or memory. Anything less will eventually be defeated. Even a system like this won't protect you from things that happen on the other end of the connection or to the connection itself. Even if your system is truly bulletproof, can you say for certain that the sites you connect to are? How would you know if the site you're purchasing from has been hacked? When the very structure of the internet has been found to be vulnerable (including DNS), how can you be sure that the site you're at isn't a copy made to steal credit card data? If your ISPs infrastructure was compromised, how would you know?

True security doesn't exist. Even if this "golden bullet" idea is limited to only what's under your direct control (your hardware and OS), as soon as it allows the user to install, update, or change configuration on anything that handles internet content or files from external sources, it becomes vulnerable. The only way to truly secure your end is to take the user out of the equation and make everything "read only". No choices or decisions, no room for mistakes or bad decisions. A fully equipped and unchangeable "read only" OS/software package, the equivalent of a custom made live CD that's built to your needs. The same would have to apply to all your external ahrdware as well. Then comes the problem of staying current. Even if a security app vendor managed to cover every way that each and every system command and API could be maliciously used, as soon as MS releases a new OS, it's back to square one. The better and more recent HIPS covered most all the attack vectors on XP. Then came Vista, which took away many of the methods they used. Repeat the cycle.

i am sorry to disagree but there is a golden bullet if you want, first if that site you visit is been hacked first use Keyscramble, then use a prepaid credit card, and lockdown your system(h.i.p.s),denny any files extentions to write to your hard drive, use a sandbox app(sandboxie)use a good firewall(online armor) and a good common sense(you),then you are secure:thumb:
note:dont forget to delete the content of the sandbox:thumb:
and remember prevention is better than the cure(no files executed,no infections):thumb: be positive:thumb:you are in control of your computer.

    No golden bullet, but

OA Free (with no pop-up for unknown programs AND run unkown programs as RUN SAFER) plus Drive Sentry Free (tackles a lot of HKCU registry keys + file access) + Avira free (set to check at writes only) is one of the strongest freeware combo's I tested.

    Regards Kees

thanks Kees. I have to agree. I have not tried it against any malware but I find OA free (using run safer for browsers) and DS a pretty good combo. Is Avira needed when DS is onboard?

Well, I understand your question because DS has a blacklist with over a claimed million plus footprints. Point is when I tested it (was quite some time ago), it seemed to okay a program based on name+ directory. When this program was afterwards infected, it did allow access.

Because you have OA free also, OA would notice that a program is changed, so OA would compensate for DS (not using a hash also to identify the program). I have no idea whether this is still the case with DS (and as said as long as you use it together with OA free or any other anti-executable type of hips, it is a non-issue).

This with the fact that DS automated malware collection is likely going to find in the wild virusses, not the older ones and the so called zoo-ed virusses, plus teh fact that DS was not tested in a decent AV comparison made me choose for the safe option: add Avira free to it (but only set it to check at writes).

I dunno about the Golden Bullet but a Golden Shield would consist of several system security apps as front-line forward protection IMO.

However first of all a "clean" backup image from a 100% dependable backup program would start you on the way to a fallback measure. For me .SNA images made via DriveSnapshot serves that purpose perfectly. Your choice may differ but the point is keep a "ready" backup image always in event of emergency or other reason.

Depending on your own personal preferences there are literally a wide assortment of various security programs as some already mentioned.

Perhaps the 3 single-most programs i found close to a Golden Bullet are respectively, SandboxIE, Returnil, DeepFreeze/AE combo, and a really STRONG HIPS. I've experienced relative calm with both Real-Time Defender or EQS complimented with a script blocker.

Although a die hard IE user who refused to jump to FF, i'm now very satisfied with the upcoming FF 3.1 and see myself transitioning to it as soon as it's ready for prime time.
