Well, it's nearly been a month now using NIS 2009, and so far it is darn nigh perfect. No glitches, crashes, or BSODs. It has caught lots of intrutions and various email bugs on the fly. We now have four machines running with it here now. Couldn't be happier! :)

I tried NIS 2009 for a couple of weeks and, for the most part, was very pleased. I've dropped it for the time being, however, because of problems I had with the streaming updates. Some days it worked smooth as silk; others the only way I could update was to do so manually. It would go from updating every few minutes to not updating for hours on end. From the Norton forum it seems others had that experience. In any event, if a solution is found I'd no doubt go back. In the meantime.....

Well, that's not a problem...manually is quick with no inconvinience. If you ditch this great suite out of that you have to be an exaggerated perfectionist...

Yes NIS09 has been performing really well for me the last few days, i'm super impressed by it. I got a free NIS08 license when i purchased a dell laptop last february which i never used. I needed to replace the expired av on the family computer so i fished it out recently and thought i'd see if it would work with the recent 09 release and it does! I got the full 15 month subscription and surprisingly its a 3 user license too! A big thanks goes out to Peter Norton :D.

I would disagree. The updates should be reliable, because what if you forget to do it manually? Still, if he gets that fixed, and he likes it, he should stay with NIS 2009.

Tried it out all day and night today, not bad, very light but not to my taste, so back to Kaspersky Internet Security 2009 i go. ;)
The layout of options and settings in NIS 2009 is not the greatest. !!

Well, I took the plunge and bought it. It just runs the smoothest of the combos I've tried. I'm still not convinced it's quite up to Avira and Kaspersky in detection, but it's not far behind if any. I'm using it now with BOClean and System Safety Monitor.

    Hi,

I am dumping KAV and looking for alternatives. I am currently testing Avira + DriveSentry, which is looking good and stable, and is free. I would appreciate it if you would give me the reasons for dropping Avira for NIS 2009. Thanks.

richrf the best advice you are going to get is to just trial NIS2009 and see for yourself how it runs on your system.

    Hi,

Ultimately, that is what I am going to do. However, in the past Norton has been a royal pain to remove from my system, once it was on. Also, reliability, stability, and support are important issues to me, as well as detection rates. So, if the Norton support is still poor, and if they still are not up to snuff on detection (it use to let all kind of viruses through on my machine), I will pass for now. But, if is more like Avira (which I am testing now), with HIPS, I would probably go ahead and test it. But it has to be equal or better. Thanks for any info.

I have had NIS 2009 installed and removed at least six times while I played with other av's and it uninstalls great. But I always put it back on.:thumb:

Ya I did that about 13 times, put Dr. Web and then Avira on, but somehow came back to NIS2009.

Can I ask, what brought you back to NIS2009. Avira + DriveSentry seem to be working well on my machine right now, so I am looking for any reasons to move to an NIS2009 config. Thanks for any comments.

If Avira and DriveSentry are expiring than you can think for NIS 2009.

Since I have previously had very poor experiences with Norton, I wouldn't switch back to it, unless I had good reasons, especially since Avira + DeviceSentry seem to be working well. Does NIS2009 provide better protection? Is it more reliable and stable on XP? Does Symantec provide better support? Is it easier to use? Thanks for any info that you can provide.

After the firewall rules are created it uses 0% cpu most of the time. Isnt that a good reason to try it? hehe Anyway you will be amazed with it but you need to try it for yourself. Look at av-comparatives for detection results.

I have never used DriveSentry and we have tested most programs, but if your current configuration is working well for you, no reason at all to change.

Avira slowed some video playback on my laptop, which Dr.Web and NIS 2009 does not. I disabled http scanning on Avira (not necessary at all contrary to what some think), and still have a problem with video playback.

    Hi,

ZoneAlarm seems to be working well for me, and it is a relatively mature product. Avira is also mature, and seems to have better detection rates. DriveSentry is totally new, so I have no idea how reliable it is as a HIPS, though for me, HIPS is more of a backup, the AV being the primary defense. NIS2009, as far as I understand, is a relatively new product also, so I want to make sure that I am not trading in solid products, for one that looks good on paper, but may have lots of latent issues that need to be resolved. Specs are one thing, but actual engineering and software coding is a different thing all together. KAV looks great on paper - but .... :)

    Thanks for the additional advise.

    Hi,

Thanks for the heads up. Avira is much faster than KAV, but I am starting from a pretty low point in expectations, given KAV's performance. I don't do much video playback, but I will observe this. While performance is very important, security and reliability is of utmost importance. From what I have seen, Avira has better detection rates. That seems to be one point in Avira's favor.

    Thanks again for your advice.

I rate detection below functionality because if I ever get infected, I would simply restore image from prior time before infection. There is so much paranoia about getting infected (I never have), but even if you do, just use some disk imaging software like Acronis or ShawdowProtect and you have no problems.
