    TI-11 Build 8101 + Vista: Create backup on event (shutdown or log off) is missing.

    Hi Folks,

    I recently bought a new computer w/ Vista Home Premium (32 bit) SP1 pre-installed.

    Need a backup solution and on my old Windows XP SP3 I had TI-11 Build 8053 installed. That computer still has PowerQuest Drive Image 4 installed. It's a little crusty but works fine, so it will provide protection until l I decide what to do with the computer. I uninstalled TI-11 from this computer, to install it on my new computer

    Before installing TI-11 on my new computer I checked for updates and found Build 8101 released, so I downloaded and installed Build 8101.

    Long story short: When I try to create a task like I was doing on my WinXP computer, now I can't find the option to create a scheduled backup to run "on event" when I shutdown my computer.

    Thinking there may have been changes to Build 8101, I uninstalled TI-11 and performed a thorough cleanup of orphaned files/folders and leftover Registry items. I installed Build 8053. No joy!

    I got the new Acronis True Image 11 Home User's Guide (PDF file, 3.86MB, Properties: Modified: June 11, 2008, 1:18:44 AM). I performed an Adobe Reader document search, for every occurrence of "Vista" and every occurrence of "limitation."

    I found only one mention regarding feature/options unavailable if TI-11 is installed on a computer running the Vista OS. The only mention of Vista issues in the User's Guide is related to "Acronis Active Restore" which I haven't tried to use.

    What's the deal here? What happened to the option for scheduling my HDD images, to be created when I shut down my computer?

    Please advise if I need to provide additional info. and thanks for any replies forthcoming.

    Cheers,
    GH

    Hello GnottHere,

    Thank you for choosing Acronis Disk Backup Software.

    We are sorry for delayed response.

    Please be aware that Windows Vista's Winlogon service is totally different from the one of previous Windows operating systems. The scheduled tasks associated with Windows Vista have been temporarily disabled in GUI. This option will be implemented in the future.

    Meanwhile, you can use the Pre/Post commands option of Acronis True Image to work around the problem:

    - Run the Schedule Task wizard;
    - At the Set Backup Options step choose Set the options manually;
    - Click Pre/Post commands;
    - Choose the Use commands option;
    - Click the Edit button next to the After the backup process field;
    - Put in the Post command as specified below:

    Command: shutdown
    Working directory: C:\Windows\System32\
    Arguments: -s

    This command will automatically shut down the computer after the completion of backup process.

    Please note that the Validate backup archive upon operation completion option cannot be used with this workaround. The post command is executed right after backup completion, not after the validation procedure.

    You can also put in any other shutdown command parameter in the Arguments field. For the complete list of the parameters please see this Microsoft KB article.

    Thank you.

    Hi Gnotthere,
    Please have a look at this thread ,post #3, where a solution has been suggested for that particular problem.

    Hello Marat,

    Thank you for your reply, and I apologize for my tardy response. None of what follows is addressed toward you, or toward any of your fellow support personnel. I am quoting elements of your post, but I'm assuming the parts I'm quoting are probably what you've been told is the official Acronis, Inc. response to this issue.

    In the time I was waiting for a reply I did manage to come up with the correct search criteria, to find previous posts addressing "the problem," and detailing similar ways "to work around" the fact that some "scheduled tasks associated with Windows Vista have been temporarily disabled in GUI."

    Since I had no interest in adding to the countless hours, over the countless days and weeks since I purchased Acronis True Image 11 Home edition, lurking in this forum in order to finally get TI-11 to work adequately on my old computer (Windows XP Home, SP3), I've uninstalled the product from my new computer (Windows Vista Premium, SP1). Thanks, but no thanks. No more work-arounds for me.

    I've re-installed TI-11 (updated Build 8101) on my old WinXP machine. I've already spent so much time lurking in this forum, to find an understanding of how to make TI-11 work, on my old computer. I'm too deeply invested to throw all that away at this point. TI-11 doesn't work the way I want it to work, because it doesn't work as the official, update TI-11 (Build 8101) PDF document clearly says it should work.

    I'll repeat that... The newly released version of the official TI-11 documentation PDF (Build 8101) makes no mention of the fact that "Windows Vista's Winlogon service is totally different from the one of previous Windows operating systems." There's no mention of the fact, "The scheduled tasks associated with Windows Vista have been temporarily disabled in GUI. This option will be implemented in the future."

    As a result of specifically the single issue stated above, and similar failure to provide adequate, complete, accurate, up-to-date product revisions, and documentation for other Acronis True Image 11 Home 'product features,' I'm done. I no longer have any trust in anything Acronis, Inc. may say, or may say they will do, about the product features of any future True Image products.

    Weeks ago, I purchased, installed, and have been using a competitor's product. I had one minor glitch during the install process, easily fixed thanks to the product's impressive web site self-help database. Up to this point every single feature I've used has worked, as documented, "as advertised."

    Thanks again, Marat. I'm sorry the time you spent responding to my question was... well, wasted time. I really tried to search this forum before I decided to register/post. As luck would have it I finally hit on the correct search terms a few days after posting. I apologize for not posting a "Never mind!" message. Probably for the better anyway. I've cooled off considerably since I first discovered the feature I want to use was intentionally disabled, for use in the Vista OS.

    Cheers,
    GH

    P.S. - Thanks for your reply too, babac. I appreciate your attempt to help me out.

    HI GnottHere, if you are still reading this, could you let me know which software this is as I am experiencing same trouble, system is not shutting down, support is sending me hard to understand, broken English replies with standard posts (system problem, delay in response and advice from the manual) that don´t work although I explicitely followed them and what the manual said.

    I am using XP and shutdown works with selfbuild batch with test-backup (no AV-scan, only files, few files) but never with big image of system with AV-scan: it just stops with the pop-up box saying operation is finished, but won´t shut down (although testing the after-prompt in the setup of the task works fine).

    Thanks for your help
    Peter

    Hi Peter,

    I hadn't intended to follow/post in this thread, after my previous reply to Acronis Tech Support. I forgot to 'unsubscribe,' so I received email notification of your post. I've corrected that omission on my part. ;)

    With regard to the specific issue you describe, and my experiences using TI-11 installed on a Windows XP (SP2 & SP3) system: I only had a relatively minor issue using the TI-11 backup scheduling feature, to create disk images on the event of computer shutdown.

    In particular, it took a very long time, after the disk imaging task completed, before the computer would finally complete the shut down process. As it turned out, in this case, the issue didn't appear to be any fault with the TI-11 software. The problem was apparently being caused by two pre-existing issues, on my system.

    First, I was experiencing an log off issue as described in M$ Knowledge Base article 837115 >> http://support.microsoft.com/kb/837115 << and the solution was for me to download/install "User Profile Hive Cleanup Service (UPHClean)" as described in that KB article.

    Second, I was experiencing shut down delay (after completion of TI-11 disk imaging) apparently being caused by my Internet security software.

    I think the firewall (which has a HIPS component) and the anti-virus (which has 'real-time' monitoring) are just doing what they are designed to do. However, by modestly altering the security software setup, to exclude TI-11 program components from security monitoring, I was able to reduce the shut down delay. I was never able to eliminate it completely.

    Peter, I'm not equipped with either the experience or knowledge to help you with the details. That's why I've primarily been a lurker of this forum and not a poster. Hopefully something in those general descriptions I gave will provide you a new clue which you can pursue.

    Lastly, I don't personally feel it's appropriate for me to name the "competitor's product" I purchased/installed on my new M$ Vista (SP1) computer system. IMO it's not the purpose of this forum and my previous post stretched the limit of what I'm comfortable with but that's water under the bridge. Might even be contrary to the forum posting rulz. I don't know. :p

    Anyway, I can't in good conscious recommend the product I chose, for my new Vista system, for use on Windows XP. I haven't installed/used the product on Windows XP so it's performance/suitability is unknown to me. Your guess is as good as mine as to whether or not that product would provide what you want.

    Suffice it to say that while I was researching the tried-and-true disk imaging type backup programs available for Windows Vista, I was looking at a very short list! There just aren't many disk imaging products suitable for personal/home users.

    Best regards,
    GH
