    Hi Halo326

Please can I ask a Question about Norton blocking things as a Keylogger :)

I set up my new laptop on the 30 August
It came preinstalled with a trial of - NIS 08
When the trial runs out... I plan to install - NIS 09

    To be honest...
In the last few weeks I've had quite a few little problems with my new laptop
Quickplay Software Hanging At Every Start Up
Then IE7 went through a stage of regularly crashing
The laptop also went through a stage of not Shutting Down properly

    Obviously...
    I started trying different things
    Looking at different things
Thinking Of Anything... To put the laptop right! :(

And this is where the Keylogger Question comes in o_O

When I first set up the laptop...
NIS 08 - Crimeware Protection ... Was turned OFF by default.

After seeking advice on the Norton Forum...
    I Turned - Crimeware Protection ... ON

    However...
After I had turned - Crimeware Protection ... ON
That's when I noticed the laptop becoming even more unstable.

I decided to have another look at the settings in - NIS 08
    That's When I Found....
    Under.... Transaction Protection

    Blocked Programs...

    1*
    C:\Program Files WIDCOMM\ Bluetooth Software \ BTTray.exe ..... Keylogger

    * This is probably my - Bluetooth Mouse

    2*
    C:\Program Files \ Hewlett-Packard \ QuickTouch\HPKBDAPP.exe ..... Keylogger

    * This is my laptops - Touch Pad

    3*
    C:\Program Files \ HP QuickPlay \ QPService.exe ..... Keylogger

    * This is my QuickPlay software

I asked for help on the - Norton Forum
But After 2 days... And No Answers To My Questions
I Unblocked the 3 programs :doubt:

It hasn't made the slightest bit of difference to my laptop.. Or - Quickplay - Hanging On Start Up
So I'm Not Sure... If I Did The Right Thing Now :doubt:

Please can you give me some advice?

Was I right to Unblock these 3 programs or Not?

    Also...
After continued problems with the laptop ... I turned Crimeware Protection OFF again.

    As I said...
It was OFF by default anyway!
So am I really doing any harm - Putting my laptop in danger ... by turning it OFF again?
Note : The laptop does seem more stable... Since turning Crimeware Protection - OFF :doubt:

I'm sorry if I've taken this thread - Off Topic!
But you Guys know so much more than me ... I Just had to ask!

    Thanks! ;)

Looking Forward To Trying - NIS 09 :D

Sorry Zeena I was at work. I am not sure how NIS 2008 is set up or the options. You should have key logging on. I am not sure if NIS 2008 gives you an alert or it automatically blocks things by itself. NIS 2009 gave me a pop up about UT 2004 being a key logger. Of course I allowed it but it was nice to see an alert and knowing that NIS was watching my back is a plus. BTW your license for NIS 2008 will work for NIS 2009. Use Norton removal tool and get NIS 2008 off your system and jump on the NIS 2009 band wagon.

Ok I removed UT from my allowed key loggers then ran UT again. See the screen shots. I got 2 alerts actually. I am impressed. BTW no system hangs during the alerts unlike some other programs.

Many thanks for sharing the photos of the alerts Halo. I have also noticed that my PC always remains dead stable whatever alert is being displayed. :thumb:

    Hi Halo326 :)

    Thanks For Your Reply! :thumb:

I wish I could put NIS 08 Crimeware Protection ( Keylogging Protection ) back - ON
    Trouble Is...
It was OFF By Default for the first week.
Then when I noticed it... And switched it - ON
I really did notice my laptop becoming increasingly unstable :(

When NIS 08 blocked my 3 programs as Keyloggers ... I Didn't Ask Me!
    It just blocked them
To Be Honest... I don't find NIS 08 very easy to use :doubt:
So... It was by pure luck - I found my 3 blocked programs o_O

I can't wait to get rid of this trial of NIS 08
And Use My... Already Purchased Un-used - NIS 08 Disk - Product Key ... To Install NIS 09

    However...
From past experience on 2 other computers...

I'd rather make sure ... I'm completely rid of the NIS 08 trial - First!
    e.g.
No Remaining Days... That NIS 09 can possibly pick up on.
    Also!
    In the past...
Whatever trial of NIS my computers have come preinstalled with ... I've never been able to move on from that year :(
    e.g.
XP - Desktop Computer No:1 ... Came with a Trial of NIS 06
I was able to install the Full 12 months of NIS 06
But when it came to N360 ... No Chance! o_O
    Note : N360 ... 2007 Product!
Computer Died Trying To Install N360 :argh:

Vista - Desktop Computer No:2 ... Came with a Trial of NIS 07
    I was able to install N360 - OK! :D
But when I tried to install N360 v2 ... No Chance!
    Note : N360 v2 ... 2008 Product!

So for this Laptop... I Really Need To Nuke - NIS 08
    Before I try installing NIS 09 ;)

    I'm Thinking...

1/ Uninstall The Normal Way *
    2/ Norton Removal Tool
3/ Seek & Destroy ... Any Left Over Folders
    4/ CCleaner

    *
Before I uninstall NIS 08 the Normal Way.....
    e.g. .. Vista's - Programs And Features ... Uninstall a Program
    Should I try and Shutdown - NIS 08 ?
    e.g..
Turn NIS 08 .. Product Protection - OFF
    OR...
Is it possible to Right Click the NIS 08 Taskbar Icon ... And - Exit ?
So as to shut it down completely :doubt:

Stop It Putting Up A Fight! :D

    Thanks!

you need to go to control panel, remove program & remove it normally than go here http://service1.symantec.com/SUPPOR...2005033108162039&nsf=tsgeninfo.nsf&view=docid

go down in the page to the removal tool download & save to desktop & run it, that should clean you up...take care

    Re: Norton Internet Security 2009

    Hi Larry :)

    Yep! ... That's What I Plan On Doing ;)

    1/ Uninstall The Normal Way
    2/ The Norton Removal Tool

But I want to know if I can Knock NIS 08 unconscious first.
Just to make sure it uninstalls ... Without A Fight!

    e.g.
    A lot of security software...
You're supposed to Right-click the Toolbar icon ... Then Click - Exit
This completely shuts it down... So it can be safely uninstalled.

But I've never heard of anyone mentioning this for Norton :doubt:

    OR!
    Would It Help For Instance...
If I Was To Turn NIS 08 Product Protection - OFF ? :doubt:

It was so much easier to say ...

    Add & Remove ... XP

    Microsoft Had To Confuse Things...

    Vista .... Programs and Features

    :)
    Thanks Larry!

Yeah, so do it... The uninstaller will disable NIS2008 automatically during uninstall, no need for manual fiddling with that. It will leave tons of junk behind regardless, Norton Removal Tool should remove most of it, I'd use CCleaner after that to nuke the rest.

Zeena after doing what dok said after reboot also go to program files common files and manually
delete the entire Symantec shared folder, good luck with the uninstall.

Probably also %APPDATA%... Well, beyond wasting disk space it shouldn't matter too much.

All you need to uninstall Norton is the Norton Removal tool. I just tried it without going through Add/Remove programs and it works great. Once again dok are you trying to start fights. Can you knock it off please.

Even *Norton* officially recommend uninstalling Norton via add/remove programs *first* and use the Removal Tool after that, when you have restarted the system, and to run the Removal Tool *at least* twice.
Even *Norton* admit to how much is left behind.

At the Norton Forum, there is a thread about the Norton Removal Tool. It was pointed out that you should only use it as a last resort.........

I am going to buy NIS2009. I currently have NAV2008.

Do I need to use the Norton Removal tool to remove NAV2008 from my system?

Or can I just delete the NAV2008 program?

Can I down load the tool and keep i until I'm ready to remove the NAV2008 so I can do that without being connected to yhe internet?

    Answer...........

You should only use the Norton Removal tool if you have a failed install of a product, or have trouble removing it with the uninstall. In your case, I would recommend using the NAV2008 uninstall. If you prefer, you can download the Norton Removal Tool just in case, but you should only use it as a "last resort" for removing the software. Thanks!

Exactly - as opposed to the person I replied to (Halo) saying use it *instead* of add/remove programs.

I know what they say but it works despite that. I tired both ways and just using the Norton toll straight out is the quickest.

Doesn't surprise me how uninformed even Symantec stuff is. In short, you should always use their removal tool for NIS/NAV2008 and below since the normal uninstaller always leaves behind a bunch of running applications, services and drivers and never removes them (e.g. Symantec LiveUpdate, Symantec Core LC). The above information from "Norton Forums Administrator" is plain wrong. :thumbd:

And once again, I'd suggest moving further debate about Norton uninstall issues to a separate thread.
    - LowWaterMark: This has now been done!

    Hi :)

    Thanks Everyone!

I'm just waiting for the Symantec UK website to offer the 15 Day Trial of NIS 09

    Unless...

Does it make any difference if I use the UK or USA - Trial ? :doubt:
    Remember....
I will be using a UK Product Key ... To convert to the Full Product :doubt:

    Thanks Again! ;)

    Hi djohn :)

    Thanks For Your Reply!

    I'll look into that! ;)

Even though I now have NIS 09
I Now Know... It certainly wasn't NIS 08 causing the problems anyway
The laptop was exactly the same with NIS 08 completely cleaned out.

    The only problem was...
First I uninstalled NIS 08 the normal way
    * But noticed it still sitting in the - Start Menu
So then I used the - Norton Removal Tool
    * But still found left over folders
So then I used CCleaner to delete approx 30 Reg Keys
    Rebooted... No DVD Player
Rebooted... DVD Player Back ... Sound - Gone!
Rebooted... Sound Back .... But problems with - Media Player - Media Centre - QuickPlay

Not A Good Day... Yesterday! :'(

    Thanks Again! :)

    Hi djohn :)

I'd like to say - Thank You! ;)

I Did As You Suggested... And Quickplay is no longer hanging on Start Up :D

I didn't go through the HP Website...
As there seems to be a few different versions of Quickplay - And I wasn't sure what I was looking for :doubt:
So I opened up Quickplay... And Updated through there ;)
    Actually...
The update did completely uninstall the old one ... And put in a new one :D

    With The New Quickplay Installed...
    I've also realised...
1/ The old Quickplay was responsible for my Internet not coming on at Start Up
It used to take well over a minute for my Internet to come on :(
2/ It seems the old Quickplay... Had also been causing problems with NIS 09
Stopping that from starting up properly with the computer too

I suppose it must be something to do with Quickplay being able to boot independently to Windows :doubt:

    Can I Ask Please...
When you got your HP Laptop ... Did you find any other little problems with it?
    For Instance...
1/ Sometimes when I Shutdown my Laptop ... The Lights Stay On!
2/ You know when you click on Start - Computer ... Well if I've changed even the tiniest thing on this laptop...
    e.g.
    Moved A Desktop Icon
    Added A Favourite To IE7
Sometimes... I have to wait 10 minutes for Computer to load o_O
    e.g.
There will be a Green Progress Bar that runs across the Address Bar.
This doesn't happen if I open any other Explorer Window e.g. Document or Pictures.
    Only... Computer
I'm wondering if it's struggling to load the Blue Ray DVD Drive o_O
As I notice it's Icon flicker sometimes ... Just as the Green Bar finally gets to the end.

I've also got a HP Desktop Computer.
And even though it's a year older ... It's much better behaved!
    Thank God! :D

    Thanks Again! :thumb:
