The other thread is security setup, which has HIPS, recovery software and other programs.

Original poster here is just asking for firewall and AV. :ninja:

There are chances that you will see many "strange things here, regarding people choices":D .If u bought a suite than use it.Don't complicate with another firewall.
And just to be precise it's not exactly anormal what you've seen since you can choose custom installation on most suites(so you can choose not to install the firewall, although i'm not sure about it's driver)but why go the hard way?If bitdefender works good don't change it.

Avira Antivir Premium does NOT have firewall.

Other than that, it's hard to get a "pure" AV/firewall application these days and generally lots of people consider standalone products better than these "all-in-one" suites. So, they end up disabling components to make them co-exist on the system. Sad result of this leak/HIPS madness. :(

Antivirus: Avira Personal (free edition) I have a 1 year license for Kav 8. However, It didn't get along with my firewall to good...so I uninstalled kav and went with the free version of avira antivir. Firewall : I'm behind a router and also run commodo firewall to monitor outgoing programs.

I dual boot windows xp and Linux Mint 5 (Elyssa) Main Edition (Gnome) Rev 1. I use "Linux Mint" most of the time. Windows is used mainly for playing games. I don't run an antivirus with linux.

    Risky.

On demand AV. Avira still nr.1 so nobody can make a mistake using this one. Gdata always a good choice of effective AV crossscanning (Avast + BitDefender) both belong to the top of the notch av engines.

Firewalls only three seriously to consider: Outpost, Comodo and OA. The rest is too leaky.

:D :D To avoid windows virus os. (Wanna prove for vista: Extract strings services.exe watch EOF behind </assembly>CRIM8?RobinL),:D :D :D (whereas crim represents in windows likely the codeword for criminal procedure or cyber crime, but maybe there is only a japanese psycho in their crew who marks his creations, as if this OS weren´t already odd enough) MD5: dfac660f0f139276cc9299812de42719

    Vista Firewall/Xp Firewall
    AVG 8.0 free and Pro
AVG 8.0 Pro with Firewall on one computer only
    Superantispyware pro
    Lynksis Router

I have been set up for years this way and never had problems.

I tend to find for my clients since all of them are novice users that they should use the built in firewall and a router mainly because they have no clue what to allow out. I have come across many users that tell me they cannot connect to the internet and once i figure out why it is normally because they blocked a windows file that actually needed to get out or an antivirus update file that could not get out to do updates because when the box popped up asking them to allow or block they just blocked it.

I have also found the reverse, when a program asked to out they allowed it and it turned out to be a trojan program.

Most novice users have no idea what type of files are on their computer. Most that I come across are lucky enough to know how to turn it on and off properly.

If you are a novice user then you should use the built in firewalls and if you are real anal then get a router. This way if the built in firewall fails for some reason you are still protected by the hardwire firewall in the router.

If you are an advanced user and know how to set up the firewall and know what to allow or diss-alow out- then go for it.

I have AVG 8.0 Pro with Firewall set up on my business computer only but then I know what to allow in and out :)

Look´n´stop Firewall. No antivirus. I do have norton antibot though, but I guess that wont count for an AV.
