bests i have ever used, are contig and page defrag

i use contig with a graphic user interface, for my data on my disk.
i use page defrag for temporary files used by windows

    two wonderful freeware programs

    i have already tested :

    windows's defragmentation
    diskeeper 10 and lite
    perfectdisk
    powerdefrag

the defragmentation was never good, never as i like

PS : a friend tells me the defragmentation is useless. i answer him ; you should try once and after you will tell me : "it's useless'

he has installed "contig on his laptop computer. he has defragmented his disk. When he has rebooted, he told me "my computer works faster"...

now he defragments his computer regulary with contig

Thanks for contig. with a freshly defraged Perfect disk I ran contig and very little changed. I appreciate this program is free which is an advantage. I wonder how it would work with a really fragmented drive ? It might work well with Returnil or Deepfreeze - do a defrag and then freeze ?

crotale26 sorry not to be clear.

I use Returnil on one machine and deepfreeze 6 on another. C: is for windows and programs with data stored on another drive. When I have installed windows and my programs and cleaned the registry tweeked everything, and got it the way I want I then defrag and finally freeze or protect C: with Returnil or deepfreeze. Every time I boot or reboot the system is the same as before. So even though contig might take a longer time to defrag than other programs it would not be needed very often. With perfect disk the disk remains in good condition - almost perfect - each time the machine is re-booted.

Of course changes do have to be made to C: so I unfreeze C: every few days, make the changes, defrag and then re-freeze. It is for this reason that I haven't seen a badly fragmented drive in quite some time.

Normally I wouldn't bother to defrag whilst frozen but with my machine having been on now for about 10 hours I have defraged it in 1 minute 6 seconds which shows, I think, how well fragmented it is.

I use the Windows built in defragmenter. Perhaps I should switch to a more powerful one but the one built in to Windows XP Pro is fine with me.

Having now played with a number of defrag programs I'm not sure that the difference between the best and the worst is a great as the manufactures would like us to believe. Certainly if using a freeze program like Returnil or Deepfreeze then almost any program will be fine.

Gone back to PerfectDisk after trying out O&O and UltimateDefrag for a couple of weeks and deciding PD is the best for my system.

Always use Perfectdisk on my laptop. On my other system i've been trying out IObits's smartdefrag, so far i'm quite pleased with it.

I have been playing around with Returnil, Clean Slate, etc. and Diskeeper works nicely with it. I just disabled the auto defrag feature on the system drive and ran a defrag with protection off.

Same as him. UD is proven to tap into high energy i never knew possible untill these super-defrags.

All other choices showed are premium picks too IMO.

A good defrag app does boost performance!

I find no need to defrag as often anymore, but it only takes minutes to organize file fragments and keeps the disk very patterned while extending it's life. (Bonus)

    I agree.

I also have Vopt myself and actually run it after a UD defrag to make sure all measurements read alike or not.

Perfect Disk... it's the best I've ever used. I seem to have to defrag my computer ALOT less than when I was using Diskeeper.

    JkDefrag.

Non-obtrusive open source programs are always the better choice.

UltimateDefrag 2008 (many options to move your files all around to front or end, you choose) and JkDefrag (realy nice 3 zones: directories (zone 1), regular files (zone 2), and SpaceHogs (zone 3) and if desired sort by name, size etc. inside these 3 zones). Both are very good.

I tried out UltimateDefrag 2008 and the options are better than any other. The programs I chose for "Performance" were noticably snappier. I just can't believe they gave it that butt ugly interface.

The freeware version "looks" fine but doesn't work on my system (XP x64 Areca Raid).

Sorry DiskTrix I just can't pay 40 bucks for something that ugly.

I'll be sticking with my old version 8 of PD. At least it doesn't hurt my eyes.

that quote kinda sums up disk defragmenter programs..... all about eye candy and catchy named features. as long as they are pretty, people just seem to imagine that their system feels "a little snappier", "slightly quicker"
