I've tried PC Tools, Norton, BitDefender over the years and keep coming back to BitDefender. Just loaded BitDefender Total Security 2009 and love it. I just have a lot of confidence in this application and company. Nothing is perfect but this works for my configuration. As you can see in my sig I also use WinPatrol Plus and Firefox3 with adblock+ and noscript. I scan occasionally with SuperAntiSpyware.

2 XP Pro Desktops - completely patched & I always wait a week or more and check out Windows Secrets to see where the bodies lie in WU. Set WU to download but not install.

Actiontek wired/wireless router (supplied by my FIOS provider. Has hardware firewall which Verizon tells me is fair to midland)

ESET NOD ESS 3.0.669 on both machines
    CCleaner
    SpyBot S&D - latest v

I try to KISS. I don't get bitten hardly at all. (Sure to jinx me now...)

Deb, you might want to change your setup (if you want to...)
with some FREE products that offer more protection than your current one:
-AntiVirus: If you have AVG Free, switch to Avira AntiVir Personal (Free).
-Firewall: If you have ZoneAlarm Free, then Replace it with OnlineArmor or Comodo.
-AntiSpyware: Ditch Spybot Search & Destroy and use SUPERAntiSpyware Free
or A-Squared Anti-Malware Free or Malwarebytes' AntiMalware Free.
If you have Ad-Aware Free, you can ditch it, too!
-Internet Browser: You might want to replace Firefox with the faster and more secure Opera browser.

For more info, read what John (a.k.a EliteKiller) -a brilliant member of this Forum- proposed in his site:HERE

    Cheers!!! :)

WOW! Thanks for the recommendations. Now I have a weekend project if it rains. Up here at the top of the world, if the sky is sunny, everyone is outside, but if it rains, then we all play on our computers.

    You guys are super!

I have one question to you about your configuration.
Why you are using SAS PRO (in realtime?), when you have Avira Premium, which offer you implemented anti-spyware module?

Can you say smth about this config, is your SAS PRO catch something what Avira don't missed?

I no Avira (paid) has good antispyware detection. but SAS Pro is only consuming 436k why not use it. With 4GB Ram there's no performance hit. and neither have ever found anything since buying in Feb-08 (except an Avira web guard block here and there) so I guess thats a good thing.

BTW- what is the estimate of when this becomes a million view thread? I am guessing 1/1/2010.

    [Freeware Only]

After a small outbreak of mallware due to my bad decision, I have decided for a change from "Windows Firewall Only Policy" to this:

Realtime: Avira Free | Windows Defender | Windows Firewall

    On-Demand: HijackThis | MWAV | PrevxCSI | SUPERAntispyware

Other Security Aplications: AxCrypt | CCleaner | IE8 Protected Mode | KeePass | OpenDNS blocking "bad domains" | SysInspectorx64 | Vistax64 with DEP & UAC

Hey jmonge, aren't you forgetting Defensewall HIPS cause its still on your signature. :)

P.S. I don't know when this thread will hit the million view mark, but this made the 3,001 post mark which is really an even 3,000 replies.
