Replacing Antivir with AVG8 for a while. We'll see how it goes.

Can anyone recommend an IE6 replacement, if thats the right word, such as Maxthon, for the IE diehard?

I'm no diehard fan of IE, but the best IE replacement IMO is Avant Browser.
I've been using it for 2 years. It's simple, less obtrusive, and more secure than IE6. The programmers of Avant make their own patches for the software.

Usually, the greatest security vulnerability is the person behind the computer ... Software matters less.

Heard the news about Symantec acquiring PC Tools.
So I bought Outpost Firewall PRO to replace PC Tools Firewall and Threatfire.

Why don't you use Maxthon or Maxthon classic.
Maxthon classic has the IE6 GUI but allot of improvements.
And if you don't feel comfortable using the, just disable them.

    Try TheWorld browser. (http://www.ioage.com/en/index.htm)
It's a really fast and secure browser, made in China (there is a english version). You will love it.
It is so popular in my country.

A regular lurker (rather than poster), since I discovered this site 9 months ago - this works well for me currently; on a Sony VIAO laptop with Vista 32 Business..

    Primary:
    Windows firewall (inbound)
A combination of common sense & complete paranoia as regards anything linked to the internet...
    Regular data backup

    Secondary:
    NOD 32 v3
Super Ad Blocker (which also runs SAS in live time), mainly for getting rid of those pesky ads
Standard user account on Vista etc
Windows Defender – A bit like leaving that extra biro in the briefcase..:)

I would happily buy Sandboxie for "more casual surfing", but have not had time to understand how to get it to work with the standard user account (it works fine using an admin account). My main reason for running current AV and similar is due to client expectations.. I have used an old home laptop (W2K / IE6) for 8 years with just ZA Pro (no AV), although admittedly on dial up. Scans have only ever picked up the occasional surfing cookies..

Windows firewall because light and effective for inbound. Would instinctively prefer to try to restrict outbound (home-dials rather than malware - similar to ZA Pro on the home laptop); but will need more time to look at and "get under the skin", particularly given combo of Vista compatibility issues and NOD v3 proxy etc, not sure I properly understand all of that yet.. Ideally, would like an outbound product where all the rules for the usual suspects were already nailed down.. Am interested to see how Online Armour beta trials out with Vista / interfaces with NOD..

Also tempted to look at TrueCrypt..

    Regards
    Peter

My security setup for Win 98 SE PCs derives now from the advice and and experince of those who post here. For the record, MANY OF YOU ARE THE AV, ANTISPYWARE AND ANTIMALWARE SIGNATURES for olser PCs.

    New Test Box Set Up:

    Real-Time Defender :thumb:

Spyware Terminator (Real-Time Shield Active List is a Big Favorite of Mine)

    Script Defender

    SandboxIE

    CyberHawk 1.2.0 39

    Kerio 2.15 (Blitzen's Adv.Rules)

Perfectly compatible on XP Pro SP2

No pressure, can watch DVD or FLV local videos with no distortions. Boot up just a hair slower, but that's to be expected because i have some Vista customization apps in the start lineup, but nothing excessively delayed. Even run a SWF Flash file at start-up.
