Well I must say that I've never tried SEP or any other AV for that matter, on a x64 rig, simply because I don't own one, neither does my work (yet). So I guess it must be x64 rigs, that SEP doesn't like?!

have been using the newest (not sure if its at the site) beta that was sent to the testers, it's got a more finished feel. It now will update the whole program to the newest version with auto update that worked flawlessly. No problems with FP's that I had early & it runs really well. Looks like as they get closer to the 9/1 release they have gotten things together...

Looks like Symantec could be pulling off a winner here.

But I personally felt like these things need looking at:

    1. Lower system resource usage, make it a little bit lighter weight. ( Yes it's pretty good, but it could use a little shedding)

    2. Any features that others might not want to use, allow for a 'Custom Setup' during the install to remove unwanted features, a few I can think of already, 'CPU Usage', and 'View Home Network'.

    3. Kill the Account setup during installation. Users shouldn't have to feel like they need to do this during the install, makes me feel like I'm installing RealPlayer and I need an account before using the program.

Symantec is heading in the right direction after many years going down Bloat Alley. If they can lighten the system resources a little more, make a Custom Setup, so users can remove features they don't like, then Symantec is going to have a winner.

Of course last but not least, make sure the damm thing has killer detections, as an AV/Malware app, and then it's going to be a winner. :)

P.S. Did I mention, pretty COOL looking GUI. :)

The phishing filter sure works good in my opinion. Just tried a few sites and he got them all (http://www.phishtank.com/ )

    custom installation would be nice.
you can turn off the cpu meter in settings.
its the best norton yet IMO.
still has some issues but its a beta so its expected.
definatly remove the account creation wizard during install.
make the password storing and its toolbar optional.
live update is alot faster than older versions and shows the progress better aka shows the amount of data downloaded and remaining.
im testing this beta and making surgestions because my friend uses norton.
i hope the detection improves alot.

That's good. I had complained earlier in Beta about it missing most from phishtank.com :D

Can you check with other phish sources ?? My evil mind thinks that Symantec has started to use the free and open phish listings of phishtank :cautious:

I suggested the custom installation too, I would like to be able to choose to install only the components that I'm sure I will use.

Well with a very significant feature missing from the x64 version (Sonar) I think the 'winner' has one black eye. Agreed on the account creation too, if I don't want to at the time, at LEAST let me have 7-14 days.

Is there a solid reason why compulsory registration is needed? The key is still verified/authenticated regardless.

Just another avenue to get customer info, methinks, another login' to remember or in my case -- forget.

Hi guys Im New here in the forum and its my first post Though I've been reading this forum for quite a while now.. Im actually a Support Offshore Tech For Norton Home and Home Office products like antivirus and Interner Security..

Custumize installation is not possible yet for 2009 version even in other older version of norton Antivirus or Internet Security..
About Phishing protection... You can turn it off though that means You want more headaches in accessing websites.

The biggest problem with the NIS 2009 beta is that it has poor detection of packers. This may be due to the fact that some heuristics have been turned off, but my view is that any AV that lacks proper detection should not have been released- beta or final.

Let us hope that the released version does not have the same problem. Of course Norton is no Avira in detection and never has been, but there are disturbing posts in the Norton Community Forum regarding issues with detection.

After reading your post yesterday, I asked the question about http scanning, at the Norton beta forum. Checked a few minutes ago. Still no answer.

I noticed that- few who know are willing to tell you. My educated guess is that it does not.

    Few Tips.

Disable CPU Usage in setting Should save few more CPU Cycle.
And if you dont like the new UI, trying changing its background. Grey Colour seems to make it a little more responsive.

I'm thinking the same. If it did have http scanning, I probably would have had my answer by now.

I read an interesting article about the new update.
Pulse updates will bring down new virus definitions every 5 minutes. General Automatic LiveUpdate will automatically check for all updates, including program updates, every hour during idle time, and will install these in the background. In 2009, manual and automatic LiveUpdate are identical in terms of what they download, so as long as Automatic LiveUpdate is turned on and you leave your machine turned on and connected to the internet, you should never have to run LiveUpdate manually.

New build posted today 24 August, v16.0.0.120

This build contains fixes for a lot of the issues seen with previous builds.

The issues fixed in this build include:
    - Incompatibilities with Norton SystemWorks
    - Excessive Load Time when launching Security History
    - Floppy Drive accessed during Norton Insight Scan

Known Issue: Your Subscription may be expiring, or you are unable to renew your subscription.
Solution: Enter in an alternate e-mail address when downloading the software to have a new activation key emailed to you.

Known Issue: Installation may fail if you install over a previous beta build.
Solution: Uninstall the previous build before installing the new build.

I was testing Norton because of some of the reviews I read about it. Have not been a Norton user since 2002 so thought I would give it a try. The first few Betas were buggy and when they started running well I could not renew my subscription. The 14 day subscription is a joke to say the least. When I posted on the forums my post was removed because they did not like what I said. They may have a good product here but deep down it is still under the control of OLD NORTON of 2002. Guess I will go back too testing the Kaspersky and Avira products. At least you get a answer in the forums.

Every time I posted something that might be deemed critical of NIS 2009 beta, immediately there was a response by some Symantec shill (that's my opinion) with the tone that of course I was not completely correct, etc. I suggested that protection though alleged to be good, has not been proven to be anywhere near Avira in tests- specifically AV-Comparatives. The new beta is indeed fast and light- but I have doubts how good it really is until I see the efficacy of it's malware detection in non-biased tests. They can deny and attempt to refute we critics, but the product needs to stand on it's own. Time will tell.

    Hello,
symantec always does well in av comparitives but in real world situations it does miss quite alot of malware.
but its not the types of malware in the av comparitives test.
i have cleaned quite alot of computers running symantec corporate and norton.
the threats that by pass it is genrally spyware/adware.

some people have tested this beta against some zlob trojans and they slipped by.
it could be because some of the beta's had some of the protection features disabled for awhile such as heristics etc
