The Incredible Lighthtness of Being, Jetico I Rediscovered

Kerio 2 is light beyond belief. On AMD dual core (2000Mhz x2):

UTorrent has been running non stop since last evening at 18:05. This screenshot is from the this morning at 11:39.

Compare Kerio's (PERFSW) CPU Time (3rd column), with the other processes. Which other firewall can run for 17 hours of full speed torrenting non stop and have 00:00:01 CPU Time? Well, Ghostwall only probably and maybe Jetico, which i never understood how to use its GUI, but was light.



Which reminds me... That TFService does look bad among all the zeros, doesn't it? Will soon replace it with SSM Free (it's very light on CPU).

Ah, why don't they make firewalls like Kerio 2 anymore?

 

Kerio is frequently recommended here at Wilders and in other forums as one of the easiest and lightest firewalls.

I tried it once, and I already thought I found my perfect firewall.
Unfortunately, I had to uninstall it 2 days later, because I started to get frequent BSODs, caused by some problems with fwdrv.sys .

Doing some research, I found that many people experience that problem and that it seems to be a well known bug with Kerio.

Actually, after that experience, I am wondering a bit, why it is still always recommended? It has some definite bugs, and there is few change that there will ever be an update to correct them

 

I don't know how common that bug actually is or what Kerio is interacting with that causes it. I've seen another that shows some defragmenter (too lazy to look it up) has problems with Kerio 2, but I've never actually seen a BSOD caused by Kerio on any of about 20 PCs I've installed it on. Several friends and clients run Kerio 2.1.5 on everything from 98 thru XP, with no problems. I recommend it because it's worked well on everything I've installed it on.

Which Kerio are you using Fuzz? Does it pass all leak tests?

 

Exactly. I also installed it on many friends PC, my daughter, without any problems. But like any other Software it's possible that it may conflict with another one.

Just go on any Forum (Comodo, PCTools, just to name a few) and you will see how many people have problems.Again this is a matter to find the right application that will work on "YOUR COMPUTER".

I just finished installing it. 3 processes instead of 2 like most firewalls. All adding up to 28K. I don't call that light. It also fails the System Shutdown Simulator test. The HIPS part.

 

Which firewall are you writing about? Jetico I installs with one service. On my machine its just under 8MB in task manager, which really is an incomplete picture. Perhaps you are posting in the wrong thread?

 

Since he talks about HIPS part too, i have a feeling he just installed Kerio (Sunbelt) 4.

 

Just to know:

it this tread now about light firewalls in general, or specially about Jetico?

If I remember right, Jetico 1 never did get to the point of being an actual service... just a regular app. I think it did become a service in v2 though.

 

The interface runs as a service, but under the user account. Most of the work is done by a bunch of drivers.

 

I was wondering: what is I/O Other, and how important is it for performance?

Using Sysinternals - Process Explorer, I saw a lot of firewalls and also HIPS that are especially active in I/O Other; maybe even the most active processes on my system (and that independent of network load, and while consuming 0% cpu).

So I was wondering: what is the reason for that, and does it affect my PC's performance or battery life?

Jetico I is my favorite too. I've spend so long to read through the post "Jetico makes me crazy" ---- that might be the most informative thread for jetico 1.

In fact, Jetico 1 is just a few steps to be excellent IMO. The GUI is easiest to understand for me among all the firewalls I tried. They just need a vista and 64 bits support (free version), some simple improvement in rule management, and optional premade rule tables (like msn, p2p .....) for those who want to add (of course, need a way to management rule importing easily), I guess half of xp computers will run jetico.

But something should change is not changed, something should not change changed More and more computer comes with vista these days while Jetico 1 keeps to be what it was 3 years ago. And Jetico 2 became commercial and buggy. Then at last Jetico makes me crazy.

I am now using Online Armor Free, not because it feels better (I experience serious network jam once utorrent started. And experienced slowing down after sp3 applied (the hips caused I guess). I don't like it uses more memories (to me, the little it use, the better, it will lower the possibility other process need to swap memory, somewhat at least), but I will keep it because they update and fix bugs really fast.

 

It depends on FW architecture. For example, NDIS level filtering takes CPU from System process, not from FW service. TDI level filtering takes CPU from a process that owns connection.

 

It has been stated by Jetico that version 1 will never be updated further, the development of Jetico went to Jetico2

Also thanks for your help in "Jetico Makes Me crazy". A suggestion --- Some posts like this are very informative and should not be stick somewhere, or in a folder, or in a sticked post. I also saw some instruction post about others firewalls.

Also, glad to see you express "jetico is a favorite". I found this in your other posts, but I guess as a moderator, you guys are too careful to say it --- for me that is painful.

At last, because I love jetico 1 and jetico 2 became commercial one, I feel really painful...... There is just several step left to my perfect firewall (or almost, everyone is greedy, isn't it ).

I guess another good thing about online armor is that SOMETIMES it is loaded before I login --- na I should say the bad thing is sometimes it did NOT loaded before I login xp. ---- SHOULD BE sometimes it was NOT loaded before I login .
