Well I don't have up-to-date malware library to test. But from what I see from AV-Test,AV-Comparative and VB 100 , all seem to indicate DrWeb is slipping towards mediocracy.
But as you say, DrWeb has scaled up. So the next comparative would be the judge, with DrWeb 4.x or 5.x ;) ....

Yes, there has been an incremental growth. But not evolutionary... till ver5.
Atleast during the beta, we will be able to gauge the hype and reality ... Lets hope they are able to release it before Nov-Dec, when I have to go shopping for my next security solution

I agree. It depends on what someone means by "bells and whistles". If you mean backup functions or registry cleaning or any other stupid thing that just makes a product more bloated, then :thumbd:

But If you mean Behaviour blocking functions, well, they should NOT be considered bells and whistles. Say what you want but those kind of functions are a MUST have in any antivirus software that deals with a lot of new threats. Heuristics are useful indeed, but much more easily bypassable than Behaviour blocking functions.

About HTTP scanning, well, I think I would like to know if what I'm going to download is dangerous BEFORE downloading it, without saying at the end " Why the hell have I wasted my time in this?". However, since some users don't want to use that feature, I think there should be an option to disable it in the installation.

The scan speed depends on user preferences and the frequency of scanning. If someone just does the scanning once a week or when he/she is sleeping than scan speed is not really important. However faster scanning is a nice feature.

Http scanning is needed to thwart drive-by-downloads which have become possible due to weak net tools like IE,flash, acrobat, etc.
In these you don't know that you are downloading, hence the protection layer is needed.

My point with scan being. For my second 80 GB hard disk (2 years ago), full of trash and downloads. Scan used to take 4-5 hours. So as you say ,I used to sleep over it.
Now I have a 300 GB hard disk, so if I run it overnight it should finish scanning all 300 GB within 6 hrs max. This is only possible if the current AV has also had exponential increase in scan speed. My hard disk size has increased in 2 years by 4x, so scan speed must atleast increase by 3x to bridge the gap.

I hope you would judge it by using the software for some time. Instead of deciding according to the latest "laboratory" tests .. which seem to be like a bible to some people.

Well as I said, I don't have a up-to-date library. Else I would have checked myself.
But one or two lab tests can be negative, not all. So maybe there is some merit, in what they do....

Yes, it does in a way. Like I said, the long drawn delay has made me very skeptic.
Even MS OneCare has behavior based protection, but then its still ... :gack:

So I'll wait till eventually ver5 arrives and to see if all that you have stated are features on paper or features at par. But the very fact that these are intended to be in ver5, is very promising.

If they don't release it in 2009 then I'd say the company's chances of survival in the market are very poor.

I think it it poor already. Their market share has got to be extremely small and likely getting smaller because of the lack of features that their competitors do not lack. If a new and more modern version is not forthcoming I would say by the early part of 2009....they likely won't be around in their present form.

Interest here does not necessarily translate into sales, and it might be the opposite. The public for the most part, has never heard of Dr. Web- and you have to have them as customers to survive over the long term.

It's long because everyone wants the underdog to win .... :thumb:
And now, DrWeb is an underdog. Will it be 'Talent potentially wasted' or 'Rise of the new Hero' ?? :doubt:
Its a fairytale everyone is eager to forecast , to obtain the 'I said so' braggin rights ....

I already put in my 2 paise on the sagging spider, let see how it goes :D

well, to be honest.... this country has only had norton and mcafee in the shops over here.

kaspersky have added to this list in the past year via pcworld.

the rest, are all unknown to the majority.

Same here in Las Vegas and the US in general. Basically, McAfee and Norton-even my ISP (Cox) which is huge in the US, offers free Mcafee AV software which of course I do not use.

exactly, so drweb is in the same boat as the majority.

sales are decent and the funds are definatly there, so im not worried.

of course, it does piss me off like everyone else that they are slow with product releases, but they are usually good when they do arrive, i must say.

so for now, we have screenshots of the main GUI and people of wilders will just have to wait for more,

The Beta version will be shipping with the release of Duke Nukem Forever. Same disc and everything :argh:

Seriously though, I may give the next edition a whirl. I have started to catch whatever disease it is that TRJam and have the desire to whip from one product to another until I settle on the one that I like most.

Other then the fact this thread was stated back in April. and most the posts are by the same people length means nothing, sales are what makes a company stay alive or sink. V5 better get out soon or or it might sink like the titanic, renewal fee's can only get you so far.

It don't even have to be good. just look pretty I mean look at Norton and Mcafee all these years they don't even have to produce good stuff (not saying they don't) to keep sales. if it has a icon in the system tray you must be safe. :D

They probably make more money than ever because of the AV-desk service.
