So after 24 days, when it goes to the free version, will it still run on Vista or no?

That is an interesting question, which I can't answer. I'll see what I can find out.

To clarify about the current Public Vista Beta Trial. When the 30 days are up it just stops working. If you want the free version you have to uninstall the beta and reinstall the free version.

I've got build 162 (non-AV) running on my machine since today and I have exactly the same reading as you show in your diagram View attachment 202059 -- Gateway marked as "Unknown"

I have no problems connecting whatsoever. In fact, I have almost always run my set-up this way, for more than 8 months now. Btw, the connection listed as "unknown" is my router. Is it the same on your set-up?

Also, do you have your LAN marked as "Trusted" in the "Interfaces" tab?? (I do.) I have never had any connections blocked -- learning mode or not -- though lately I have had a bit of trouble with time-outs, which I have hopefully sorted out by flushing my connections and pre-fetch caches.

    I'm running version 3-beta.

    Yes, it's my router.

My router is a full-on SPI firewall. Maybe that made the difference as to how OA regarded it. Or maybe I wrongly answered some previous OA pop-up in such a manner as to cause the router to become untrusted. Who bloody knows, wot? All I know is what I showed in the screenies -- b4 was no go; after was go go. Further deponent sayeth naught. ;)

    Yeth.

    Hi bellgamin,
ARP traffic is internal to your LAN, having SPI enabled within your router would not make your firewall stop receiving ARP broadcasts.
There are some problems with the ARP filtering within OA that where reported in earlier builds (verison 2) these have never been addressed, maybe because it is not an issue with many users, but there should be no need to "trust" a router just to receive broadcasts. I myself still see problems with ARP if I set a PC on LAN as untrusted, as that then blocks outbound ARP broadcasts from my PC to the gateway, so that then blocks all traffic.
I currently have a number of issues with how OA processes/handles traffic, but will wait for a full release to see if those issues are resolved.

I love the new beta. I didn't have to add any rules to get a passing grade from Shields Up, there are some great new options, and the fact that every unknown app is automatically given less rights is excellent.

Just tried it and... failed completely.
I had no internet access with it and it was using too much system resources.

Anyway, for me OA firewall since version 2 never worked on my machine. :(

It slows down my Vista Home Premium SP1 30 seconds at bootup.
    No thanks:thumbd:

But I would give it a 10/10 if that was fixed:thumb:

Do you run Avast by any chance on the same machine?

Hello Stem and bellgamin et al.

FWIW I agree with Stem (not a surprise).

IMHO, unless you are a beta tester or wants to TEST public beta's with full ability to image recover don't use beta versions period.

Only use beta's on separate PC or under VM or sandbox for testing not your primary PC for day to day use.

Otherwise revert to current public full version 131 and wait for next full release version xyz.

What is too much resources? What were the numbers for each oa exe?

Show the thread the jpg image from the task manger.

    Version 2? Which build? 155? 157? 159, 137? 161? 162?

Internet access can be lost many ways.

But wait are you not a CFW user?

Is there a problem with OA and avast?.I ask because i had avast installed when i tried the recent beta for vista and i had all sorts of problems, including not being able to boot to desktop.I had to use shadowprotect to restore before OA.

    Hi ellison64:

Yes I see your point, thank g.. for image backup in the world of betas!

Mike, is there any way you/OA can provide the thread(s) with a list of 3rd party conflicting SW for OA products beta or otherwise.

One vendor I know that has a great list is Perfect Disk Profeesional 2008
where they list the products that clash with it along with work arounds.

Oh noes! I guess you are rebooting your box every five minutes so this is t3h ultimate measure for firewall's quality.

    doktornotor,

I think demonon has shared a valid concern regarding an observed delay on his machine regardless of how often he reboots. It is not like startup and shutdown delays with OA installed is a new complaint. It does not happen to me but if it did I would surely report it.

demonon- any beta observations are useful - keep them coming and maybe it will be a 10 for you soon also.

    Hi Ellison,

A problem has been reported yes - we;re not sure if it impacts some or all users yet - but we are looking into it

No but it has a nice impact on Notebook battery life. vista takes long enough to boot up as is with out adding more time to it esp from a firewall. its not just boot after you get into windows it likes to chew on CPU cycles. for my notebook its just not going to cut it. ;)

Um, OA shouldnt be using CPU cycles.. we did have an issue in the beta with IE and repeatedly accessing something or other (forgive the vagueness, it was a while ago) but this has been sorted out and will be included in the next beta.

If OA is consistently using CPU there is a bug or a conflict that needs looking at. On my notebook, running ICQ, Yahoo, Calc, Two Firefoxes, Outlook, and a load of junk in the task tray OA is sat at zero cpu over all processes.

Mine is a flat format from scratch install of windows vista Ult then OA. the thing chews CPU cyc's for about 20 sec. not much but on a Notebook with the extra boot up time then full CPU for 20+ sec eats my battery like no tomorrow.

I never said anything about it's a bad firewall.
For now I won't use the firewall on my Vista rig until this bootup annoyance is fixed.

    Hi,

    now for something completely different.
It seems to be a piece of cake to remove features from OA Free.
But it also seems to be unfeasible to remove the removed features from the GUI.
This may throw new users into a state of panic, like happened to S. Miley in the upper pic.

    S.Miley.png

The lower pic shows how happy he could be, if there would be no irritating grayed out stuff.

    Cheers

There is nothing on.. its a fresh install from the Win Vist Ult disk it self. then a fresh install of the beta.. nothing else running.
