Good alternative to Acrobat Pro. Adobe's offering is not really bad, but the pricing is just too much (and for every Adobe software).

 

I'm seriously considering giving Nitro a shot but can't figure out why the price on their web site is $20 higher than on the Avanquest site.

Moreover, I've seen prices on the boxed product for under $70 from the likes of Amazon and Newegg. Based on the image of the box, it certainly appears to be the latest version (i.e. 5.xxx). Am I missing something? Is there an advantage in buying directly from Nitro?

 

What is the difference between Adobe Acrobat pro and Nitro PDF? Are the additional features in Adobe Acrobat pro usually used by the ordinary user or will Nitro PDF suffice?

I don't have Adobe Acrobat pro. I am just interested in the differences between the two programs.

 

To be honest, I don't really see any significant difference between the two, other than the price. So yes, I'd say NitroPDF will suffice.

 

IMO that's quite much. If I really have to edit PDF's and so on my only choice is Adobe. It's a standard like Photoshop, Illustrator, InDesign etc.

 

And that is precisely the point. Would you class yourself as the ordinary user? If you would, that would suggest that you think the ordinary user wont find a full set of features in Adobe Acrobat pro that useful.

Have you tried both Adobe Acrobat pro and Nitro PDF? What are the differences? I know it is a standard, but not everybody needs the standard and wants to pay for the price of Adobe Acrobat pro. What kind of user would need Adobe Acrobat pro and what kind of user would be happy with Nitro PDF?

 

Since I don't create PDF documents that much (and don't have Acrobat Pro), I really can't say whether the features are worth it or not. Suffice to say, I've found that, after reading the feature list of Acrobat Pro 9, an ordinary user wouldn't use most of them unless they have a business or some professional work. On the other hand, NitroPDF can pretty much do what Acrobat can for a third of the price.

I've used NitroPDF professional for awhile and for the price, it's a top product.

Adobe has better compression, such as when stripping a pdf of various components and minimising it to the smallest file size.

Apart from that, NitroPDF professional is great.

huangker, regarding what kind of user would need NitroPDF pro, I need it for editing PDF documents sent to me (sometimes an original word/excel, or Adobe InDesign document can't be found), such as changing the content, merging with other PDFs, deleting certain pages, importing other PDFs at certain sections of the document, re-ordering the structure of the document, adding headers/footers, adding 'metadata' - page properties such as 'who owns/copyrights' the document, minimising the file size and so on. Adobe Acrobat Professional does the same, and I also use it for work. NitroPDF professional, to me, is just easier to use, and others have said, is a third of the price.

First off, I must point out that I've never used NitroPDF. But I have tested a couple alternative methods for PDF creation and editing.

Recently, we needed a PDF editor for several users at work (for basic edits like adding/deleting pages, re-ordering pages, etc.) We tried FoxIt's $99 PDF Editor but were disappointed with the complicated interface. (Actually, it's very difficult! Takes lots of practice to be good with it.)

Happily for us/me, I ran across PDF-xChange Viewer from posts here at Wilders and checked it out. The Pro version of PDF-xChange Viewer has proven to be exactly what we were after. Currently it's at $24 US (eventually it's supposed to go for $40 once all the planned features are in place.) http://www.docu-track.com/home/prod_user/PDF-XChange_Tools/PDF-XChange_Viewer_PRO/

While I have no doubt that NitroPDF offers features we don't have with PDF-xChange, I'm not sure how many of those features we would ever use. Especially for the extra $$. (Even after PDF-xChange goes to full price, being able to buy approx. 2.5 seats of PDF-xChange vs. one of NitroPDF is (IMO) significant.)

As for PDF creation, there are free alternatives that work very well. My favorite is Bullzip http://www.bullzip.com/products/pdf/info.php It has several options and it has made excellent quality PDFs from everything I've tried so far. (There is a 10 user limit for commercial use though.) A good second alternative is free CutePDF Writer http://www.cutepdf.com/Products/CutePDF/writer.asp

In the FWIW category... After directly testing the output, I can no longer recommend PrimoPDF as a free PDF creator. I tested it against Bullzip and CutePDF writer and Primo's output was noticeably fuzzier on MS Word docs with graphics.

 

Another good alternative is Nuance PDF Converter Pro v5.0. It will do eveything Acrobat will do, plus it will also read pdf files with one of the best text to speech voices on the market.

Bullzip is an excellent free altetnative that works in native x64 mode under x64, the outputs are smaller than most even with images and there are many altenatives like merging and watermarking which are pro features in others.
