    Hello,
    1. What are you trying to achieve?
    2. They are two different products.
    3. There's no better - only what you like more.

    Hi,

Geswall works as a sort of Sand Box isolating network based apps from your system - this way protecting your OS from web attacks. GW is not a firewall nor an anti-malware app in the classical sense - it has no inbound/outbound control nor scanning features. OA is a good firewall strengthened by HIPS features to further defend your system.
If you choose GW it is better to use some firewall as well.
However, I would not rely on GW with a firewall only. Some further layer(s) of defense is/are also recommended. At least some real-time Anti-Malware/monitoring app(s) or on-demand scanner(s) may come in handy just in case you download some nasty from the net.
Webroot firewall also has HIPS features besides its firewall function.

Threatfire is mainly a behavior monitoring anti-malware app with some outbound control. Also a good app.
IMHO your config with Threatfire looks nice and is also light on resources.Which is Not bad at all.
Perhaps you could add some site-ranking software like Site Advisor or Linkscanner or something similar just to
decrease the risk of bumping into a malsite while surfing.

    hi, xtree,
look up this site about your inquiring at the http://wiki.castlecops.com/Host_Intrusion_Protection_System_-_Comparison fyi threatfire is a hips. I just only use this combination: avast, comodo personal firewall (already has hips), spyware terminator (already has hips and I deactivated it)) and superantispyware pro (registered key) but there is freeware and only one real-time protection for antivirus and antispyware. best regards.

    Hi,

The paid version of OA has a feature called RunSafer, which sandboxes running applications and processes for XP and Vista users, although it is not supported for W2K users. I don't remember whether RunSafer is part of the OA free version.

I'm a W2K_SP 4 user and run the GesWall free version concurrently with OA AV+ (paid) specifically for browser sandboxing, because that's basically what GesWall Free does--sandbox browsers. They play fine together. I haven't had a passed blocked event packet in my firewall logs for a loo-o-o-ng time.

    Cheers,

    Pinky

    Hi Carioca,

Yes, you may call it a HIPS as well - it is a collective name which may include Threatfire too. However, as a quote from PCTools's site says:

    **************
How can ThreatFire protect me when traditional antivirus can't?
ThreatFire continually protects your PC against attacks by detecting malicious behavior, such as capturing your keystrokes or stealing your data, instead of only looking for known threats like normal antivirus software. By implementing sophisticated real-time behavioral analysis ThreatFire is able to stop never- before-seen "zero-day" threats solely by detecting their malicious activity.
    **************
A classical HIPS usually monitors every event on your pc leaving you the chance to decide if sg is good or bad. IMO it is a bit different approach. This is why it is not easy at all to use a HIPS properly. TF was made rather with the average Joe in mind. :)
    Regards/xtree

I guess it depends on what you specifically need. If you just want something to run apps with limited rights then geswall free is designed specifically for this purpose and is probably your best option. Online armor free also has a similar 'run safer' option as well as a host of other features like a firewall and hips etc...

I did. it just seemed like a A vs B still post. that's why I asked.

as for Webrot. Never used it before not seen it on any tests. but that does not mean it aint good. try it see what you like if you like it stick with it. other then that pretty much all Security software will protect you some just have different flavors then others.
