Just tried FlexTk Express, seems to be a top program.

Much difference between the pro and the free version?

Just noticed when the program is accessed, it attempts to make an outbound connection to check for updates. Apart from disallowing the program, is there anyway to change (and uncheck) the attempted update?

Did you trial directory opus ?

 

I am a fan of PowerDesk in the past but have given up PowerDesk 7 because it cannot display Chinese and Japanese filenames.

I am now using Directory Opus which I think is even better than PowerDesk 7.

 

I never used powerdesk.DO was my first file manager .I tried others but always went back to DO because in my opinion it is the best out there.

 

1. Nope, The other versions are meant for business/power users.
2. Nope, There is no option to disable/enable the check for any updates.

 

Have you tried QTTabBar plus QT address bar?
Free & add tabbed browsing to Explorer as well as 'Vista-like' breadcrumbs bar if you don't already use Vista.
Advantages - free, don't need to be installed (just added to explorer Tool bar), light as a feather on resources, stable and don't need to change file browser from Explorer:

seems to work.
cant seem to hide the standard file,edit,view,tools,help as shown in the screenshot.
i was hoping for a new tab button and drive letters bar and not having to right click.

yes i did
looked like a forest. to many menu bars and options.
the menu bar with all the different folder views looks really cluttered IMO.
all i want is tabs,dual panel,preview and cmd here or terminal. so i should be able to browse to a directory click cmd here then type the commandline. dont need search since my stuff is organised. a replacement copy handler would be great to.

any mac style explorer replacements for windows?

 

Are you running Vista or XP?
The screenshot shows QtabBar on Vista where you can remove File, edit, View etc (Explorer>Organize>Layout, uncheck menu bar) .
As far as I know this is only possible on XP by using a 'Vista' Styler theme & following instructions on:

Have you tried Teracopy - ugly as squashed bat but does the job better than Windows File Copy.
I'd suggest this together with either Xplorer2 or QTTabBar and you're good to go.

yes acually i used teracopy to copy from internal drive to usb drive.

 

Regarding the portable file manager NexusFile I mentioned previously, the default appearance can be changed to a white background.

Works well using tabs, and bread-crumbs. Also remembers your last opened folders.

Well, it's been some time since I last tested XYplorer and I was pleasantly surprised upon revisiting the current version, 7.40.0001. Its tabbed interface comes pretty close to the Firefox experience. Wow, that's even better than dual pane!

XYplorer is portable and highly customisable. As for support, there is a wiki and a dedicated user forum, the XYplorer Beta Club. It is not perfect yet - there are so many options that the menus have become a bit cluttered - but this is one to keep!

Came across this thread recently and decided to check out some of the mentioned file managers. I have been using PowerDesk 6 for the last couple of years. I'm a current XP user, though my better half does have a laptop with Vista installed.

One item that I haven't seen supported by the apps I have tested in the last few days is displaying archive files just like a directory in the Tree (Folder) window. Thus, when I expand a folder in the tree view, I want to see all the ZIP files that are in that directory listed with any other directories that are at that level in the tree view, not just in the file list view (I also wouldn't mind an option to not even show archive files in the file list view but only in the tree view). Of course, clicking on such a file in the tree view would then show the contents of the archive in the file list view. This, in my opinion, goes further to treat an archive file like a directory. Powerdesk 6 supports this, and since I rarely have used Windows Explorer over the years, I just discovered that it supports this feature as well.

I've played around with Free Commander, Total Commander, and Xplorer2 so far and could not find such an option in any of these (tried XYplorer as well, but that doesn't support archives natively, so this doesn't apply). Xplorer2 will display the archive file in the tree view when the file is opened, until the file's parent directory is collapsed (thus it disappears from the tree view when the parent dir is re-expanded). I still intend to try out Directory Opus.

So am I just missing the right config settings for these programs, or is such a feature rare (or is my test partition a bit screwed up)?

Doug_B - Opus can show ZIP archives (and RAR archives) in the folder Tree, and can treat them as normal folders. I don't believe it's possible to hide them in the Lister itself, but you could try asking at the forum.

 

Thanks for the resource links. As others have stated, this does look like a fairly powerful and customizable app. It does cost a premium, though.

Appreciate the recommendations for Fileboss and A43. Note that there was no references I could find in Fileboss's Getting Started manual for any kind of native zip file or similar support. I have used A43 as installed on BartPE, so maybe I'll check that out further.

Well, I was a Total Commander user till I read about Xplorer2 here and I gave it try and I love it. Some of the stuff in TC I wanted to do I had to dig around the net for various third-party plug ins (like showing folder sizes) but everything I want is built into X2. Support is superb both on the forum and direct from the author - all questions have been answered within hours. Theres even a free version if you just need a few features. And, it looks good too, well for a file browser anyway!
