Running Windows XP Home and TI 10.0.4942 I want to have my computer automatically shut down after making the back up AND verifying it.

Is it possible to have an auto shut down AFTER the verification?

If so, can you confirm for me the actual code line and method for making the command work?

I have been a bit confused by the posts I read after using the board search function.

    TIA!

    Hi Scottlid,
Please have a look at this thread,(post # 4) where a very honourable member of this Forum has brought an answer to a similar question.
However,I think that your Acronis version still has a bug as far as shutting down the computer after the verification process.Actually,it might shutdown by itself right after the backup process.

If so,change the 0 at the end of the command line by a reasonnable number of seconds Acronis will take to do the verification. The actual time needed for the verification process can be determined by checking a previous log.

    Thanks babac,

I had read that post, but still found it a bit confusing because it did not address the verification process.

I see from your comments that you think that there may be a problem with shut down after a verification. You advise to change the number to a number of seconds for verification, but a verification of my backups usually takes a few hours. Thus I continue to be confused.

Should I be upgrading to version 11? Perhaps this version has a better shut down capability?

    Thanks for your continuing help.

    Hi Scottlid,
If the shutdown/verification process would work correctly, it would take you exactly the same time to complete the job as it will take to do it as I suggested. So , I don't see why this could cause you a problem.
Version 11 is likely not to solve your problem as discussed in this thread.

Thanks Babac, but I have no idea what this sentence means; I just can't follow the meaning/syntax:

I am guessing that you are instructing me to replace the "0" with perhaps the number "7200" representing two hour's worth of seconds to delay the shutdown while the verification process goes on. This assumes that the two hours would cover the verification process. I of course would have to figure out how long the verification process takes for my particular backup.

    Do I have this right?

Weird that Acronis has not built in a "shut down when finished" check box feature like so many of my other burning/recording program have. It seems like such an obvious feature that most users would want. Start your backup when you are finished working at night and have your machine shut off when done.......

    Hi Scottlid,
You're guessing me right. It's exactly what I meant.

The pre/post commands designed by Acronis can achieve a lot of needs including the one you're looking for.The only problem is the bug that shuts down the computer before the verification process, which can be overcome by changing the 0 for another time span.

Once this bug is fixed(if ever) every body will be happy for ever ...

Thanks babac for your patience with my questions. I am off to try the technique. Weird that Acronis has not fixed this....

    Cheers.

    HI Scottlid,
May be(I presume) the bug to be fixed is more complicated to do than asking for it to be fixed.

Oooo so sorry to bug ya again. As I went to set up this technique and reread your referred to post, it brought up another question. My understanding is that one changes the "0" to the number of seconds for the validation process to delay the shutdown that gets initiated on completion of the backup, but on rereading your message from the referred to post, it appears that you want me to change the number of seconds to the number of seconds of the backup PLUS the validation process.

    .

If the shutdown command gets executed by the Acronis program after the backup is completed, then why do I need to include the number of seconds that the backup takes and not just use the number of seconds that the validation takes?

Thanks for hopefully the last request for clarification on my part!

    HI Scottlid,
The 0 in the command lines is launched as soon as the backup is done.

Therefore, as you want it to be launched when backup+validation are completed,
then add the number of seconds required for the validation purposes only.If you add them both up (backup + validation) it will work but the computer will stay awake longer.
You try and post the results here please ,so as to inform the general population...!:D

Operation was completely successful. Thanks to Babac.

Here is a summary for those who are following this thread:

Use this syntax in a notepad file saved with extension ".bat":

    %SystemRoot%\System32\shutdown.exe -s -t 0

replace "0" at end of syntax with the number of seconds that a verification will take with some room to spare.

    I used "5400" for 90 minutes.

Use this file by navigating in the Acronis program as follows: Tools > Options > default backup options > Pre/Post commands. Browse for the new .bat file in the "after backup process" text box.

The command for shutdown will start after the backup is finished but before the verification has started and will run like a shut down timer giving you enough time for Acronis to complete the verification process before the machine automatically shuts down.

The .bat file can be edited at any time to change the delay to shut down time by right clicking the .bat file and choosing "edit" which will open the file in Notepad so that you can change the time and then resave it. If you mistakenly double click the .bat file, it will launch the delayed shutdown process and as far as I can tell, there is no way to stop it!

    Cheers.

    Hi Scottlid,
I tried to stop it through the Task Manager and ... no way.
Therefore, if you make that mistake, I did not find a way to come back.

    You must be very fast:

    Start->Execute...->CMD->shutdown -a

That breaks the countdown. Normally :)
