I guess that I belong to the lucky ones.
All these months, I've been using TF Pro (slider level:4),
and I've seen NO problems (= No creazy pop-ups, no FPs, crashes etc.) :thumb:
    :)

TF ran great on my PC, but so does Mamutu and Norton AntiBot. I was fortunate to get both Mamutu and NAB for free, but if I had to pay for any of the three, it would be Mamutu. That said, ThreatFire Free is a great choice for a good Behavior Blocker. I think NAB offers some added protection with Mamutu, and so far it's been running quite well with Mamutu and AVG 8.0 Internet Security Suite. (another freebie until October 16th of this year) I don't have AVG's Web Shield or LinkScanner installed though, as it seemed to slow down FF a little bit. Anyway, for 29.99 I doubt I'd buy NAB, but the Norton name probably helps to sell it to a lot of people.

What will Antibot, not protect you against. I mean when you look at the website it basically says it stops everything a AV does, but only when it goes active. I know it isnt great with low level nasties, but who cares.

I realize I don't need anything more than a good AV, Firefox, and some caution in my surfing. However, I like to live by the "just in case" scenario where using different security programs is not only fun, but they are in place "just in case" a true zero day threat would actually come along some day while using FF. I am a freebie guy though, and I have used enough security software to know what is good, but costs too much money. LOL. NAB seems good, but 29.99 is too much money for it. SuperantiSpyware seems to be the best deal going for the money and after using it, I can understand why it is a favorite here. Anyone want to trade a SAS Pro license for a brand new NAB one. LOL.

Norton Antibot running well here and seems lighter than ThreatFire. A pricey program I agree, but nice just the same. By the way. That wordward is a habitual changer of security programs and I think a schizophrenic. LOL. I wouldn't be surprised if one of his personalities isn't a moderator. LOL.

NAB doesn't clean file infecting virii, MBR infecting malware, macro virii, and some kinds of rogue antispyware/av. Sometimes the marketing for security products makes everything more confusing, but the key to NAB is really in the name--anti bot :)

Thanks grumbledke. So then I guess the questions I have now are. How likely is it for someone to become infected with a bot, and how effective is NAB at preventing them?

Yeah, neil is really good, he does his homework.

Bots and their many, many variations are the tools of choice at the moment for the bad guys who want to make money off of internet crime. Either using them as spam senders, phishing hosts, or extortion (hey mr. website owner, pay me $50k or noone can get to your website). If the question is how likely are *you* to get infected with a bot, I can't answer that. However if you phrase the question How likely is it a botmaster wants 400k infected machines, the answer is Really Badly.

I wonder what other security programs can prevent and detect botnets?

Trend Micro has a free program called RUbotted. Behavior blockers like SAS, Prevx, TF, and Mamutu, as well as traditional AVs, can also detect bots.

Sorry for digging up the thread, but I wanted to ask a question.

Why does Norton Antibot want to disable Windows Defender during installation (there is a checked box next to "disable Windows Defender")?
Are there any conflicts or is it just an overlap?

    Thank you!!

Well just for the record, I installed NAB and have it running with Windows Defender and Dr.WEB.

No issues or slowdowns so far.

I have thoroughly tested NortonAntiBot with NIS 2008/2009 beta, Avira (both Premium and Suite) and Dr. Web. There have been zero issues in two months. :thumb:

    Hi,

I have Norton AB for a long while, the feeling I have is that if you ever get an alert from it, the 7.0 scale of earthquake is imminent. AB, An application nice to have, but not a must. Save those license fees for any other more constructive uses. IMO. :doubt:

Actually, that is not necessarily an indication that NAB is not doing anything, more likely your AV is working so well that NAB is never activated. If nothing invades, you cannot get a Norton alert- right?

    Hi,

You are right. AB is just like a Safety in American Football, if a RunningBack/WideReveiver is passing him, then a touchdown is a sure thing. :-*

It is 209 at the moment.

Yes, NAB is at configuration 209 at the moment. As for program updates, I guess we'll have to rely on the Updates Alert forum or visit Symantec's forum.

Thank you for your answer. So it is the configuration that is updated often, interesting.
I like the info NAB presents for every process, seems solid so far overall.

NAB usually sends a pop-up for you to update or you have to manually check the update tab inside the software itself?
