    It's a great one.

You can tweak it to your needs. Take time to use & learn it and you should be sweet!

I don't know about routers, but it's my understanding that you shouldn't run 2 firewalls at the same time or you'll have problems.

Whoever told you that is misinformed. The router is enough. At the end of the day it comes down to whether you want outbound protection or not. Personnally I think it's a waste of time and resources.

The very funny thing is with the up-to-date XP you doesn't need inbound protection either. Though, FW combined with HIPS can catch a real lot of rubbish one can pick up surfing internet. Modern firewalls are hardly about protection (including H/W examples), they are rather about control. For example, I do not want some programs to call home. And only FW with HIPS can provide such functionality without preconfiguring.

All I want to say is -- if you don't surf much, if you don't have childrens who can access your PC, if you follow strict security behavior when accessing internet, if you don't use online banking then .. you don't need neither HW nor SW firewall.

If you wish to control what and where any of your programs connect, if you wish that accidentally started malware didn't harmed your PC, if you wish that your computer didn't become spam distributor, if you wish that your online bank accound was not stolen then .. then you need software firewall with HIPS functionality. I never said a word "Comodo". There are many out there that are pretty good for the task. Let's say Online Armor, Jetico, Outpost, KIS. Also there are sanboxing solutions like SandBoxie, DefenceWall, ShadowDefender etc .. Which one is the best for you the only you can decide. And never hear to those who say "THIS IS THE BEST FOR YOU". They are just promoting their favourite product and their personal agendas :)

I tried Comodo with the HIPS feature for about a month last winter and disliked it. To put things in context, I'm an average computer bloke. Generally speaking, my reading of forums suggests that folks who are above-average in computer skills seem to do well with Comodo with HIPS while those in the average or novice column struggle with it. There are exceptions, of course.

For me, Comodo with HIPS was too much to handle. Even uninstalling it became a nightmare (you might want to check out this l-o-n-g thread in Comodo's own forum about that issue). https://forums.comodo.com/empty-t17220.0.html

So, regarding Comodo, my opinion is that (a) you can consider their firewall with HIPS if you're well-skilled with computers, or (b) you can consider Comodo with HIPS turned off if you're determined to use their firewall (but you still have to download HIPS because it comes bundled with the firewall function).

Having said that, I run Windows XP Pro behind a router firewall with my Windows firewall turned on as well (probably not necessary, but it doesn't hurt). I don't have a two-way software firewall and, to echo Beavenburt's sentiments, I don't think I need outbound protection. In addition, what I have happily found and enjoy using is a very good and easy-to-use program (also mentioned in the preceding post by alex s) that protects me while I'm browsing: Sandboxie. (It's also very light on your computer's resources.)

The opposite to the complicated Comodo is Online Armor. A pleasure to use.

It might be worth running your kid on LUA. Other than that don't worry. Router and Windows firewall is more than enough for FW protection. So Flash or whatever wants to auto update, so what? You can disable apps that phone home in their own settings.
Seriously, don't bother with Comode, it's for intermediate to advanced users imo.

If you turn Defense + off after installation via the tray icon it's fine for beginners.

With D+ turned off it worth nothing. The better way would be ZA Free or PC Tools Free.

To give a better answer it would help to know what router you are using; does it have "firewall features" such as SPI and are those features enabled? Are you using the latest firmware available for the router? Have you changed the password for accessing the router's configuration? Just the fact that you're using a router doesn't automatically make you safe.

Regarding personal firewalls running on the host PC (in other words Comodo or ZoneAlarm or whatever running on your computer) they vary a lot in terms of features. In addition to providing a firewall many offer application control, HIPS, behavior analysis, etc. By learning about these protection techniques you will be able to better assess what you need to achieve an acceptable level of security. Also, if you have file sharing enabled on your network then you are potentially vulnerable to anything your kid downloads to his PC.

I do online banking on my PC. I am behind a NAT router with SPI and use PC Tools Firewall, Kaspersky Antivirus and Keyscrambler (Anti-keylogger). Hope this helps.

my router is D-Link EBR-2310 with NAT and SPI Firewall enabled latest firmware and password changed. file sharing is off as for that reason. so should i use a firewall if so is comodo recommended. also my system is windows xp pro sp3 i have avast antivirus and windows firewall of-course.

In what way are ZA Free or PC Tools Free more secure than Comodo w/o Defense +?

Personally I find Comodo as user friendly as ZA Free once the D+ is turned off and it still passes the GRC Leak Test and shows as fully stealthed on Shields Up.

Yes you can use a standalone firewall in addition to the router. You will be more secure & have better control of outbound connections. Try Online Armor free. That is what I use with my D Link router. Wrks great for me.

All of the above sounds good  I would still recommend using a firewall on your PC. Some people say that monitoring outbound connections doesn't make the computer more secure, but I disagree. Some years ago a trojan got into my computer. Antivirus and Outpost firewall did not catch it coming in. Outpost did catch it when it tried to connect out to the internet though. That's what alerted me and I've used firewalls with outbound monitoring ever since. There's no guarantee that outbound monitoring will catch everything - no security strategy is perfect - but it's a useful tool.

I've used comodo and it worked fine for me. I found the interface unintuitive though and currently use PC Tools Firewall Plus v4.
