Most AV companies have been around since the early 90s

Well I don't know the exact dates but Kaspersky is 10-11 years and I think Symantec is like 25 or something, so it has more time to establish their reputation and products.

I think product quality comes first and not the age of the vendor.
As a comparition Nvidia its a "young" vendor but they are oustanding against old known vendors in their field of bussiness. They even "killed" experienced vendors.

then again remember that mcafeee brought out dr solomans.
i still have a pc with dr solomans on it:D running windows 95.
didnt relise eset was founded in 1992.
Sophos have been going since 1985 and they still quality products. most companies always think of mcafee and norton being market leaders since they have been in the market for so long. but for some reason forget about sophos.

i mean how many companies acually think of new technology instead of stealin the ideas of other antivirus companies?
there is only around 5 original antivirus companies the rest simply copy from the originals.

Well maybe two decades back Symantec and McAfee were the best, I have no idea.

Who are the supposed 5 AVs that pioneered the av industry?

    Thanks

Those are just the "official" dates. In fact the technology had been in development far before the companies were officially founded....

Reach matters. Support matters. A good brand name also matters. Thing is that McAfee and Symantec have one thing a lot of others don't have: many, many offices in many, many countries. This facilitates better support and more timely responses, at least in the eyes of someone who's thinking of which AV is best for his corporate company. Obviously it would be "safer" to pick an AV that has a good brand name AND has a local office nearby ;)

That was an Igor Daniloff quote from a while back. Personally I raise an eyebrow whenever anybody mentions it......

(BTW: I thought this thread was for discussion of the latest virus.gr comparative test.........)

Hi firecat, yes it is about the lastest virus.gr testing but i was simply pointing out that most tests are very far away from real life.
in a virus test you get all the major av vendors products and test them to see how much of the malware is detected. in the real world you can be one click away from malware infecting your machine. 9/10 antivirus products would report the infection but not be able to clean it.

Actually, the difference between the free version (classic) and premium (paid) version is: http://free-av.com/en/download/1/avira_antivir_personal__free_antivirus.html . So the results are right that the premium version scores more.

The feature shows that the paid version detects spyware and adware. But by dropping spyware products from the test, he is suggesting that he has not included spyware and adware in the sample. The core virus engine is the same and should perform the same for a test bed of viruses.

The first antivirus was invented by Al Gore (the same guy who invented the internet) and 4 of his close friends. You mean -- you didn't know that!:argh:

The many offices in many countries is an asset. But if you have to consider the plain fact that Norton and McAfee products are the most commonly installed security products since the 1980's in computer systems that are bought from vendors. Over those many years, I don't see any other security related software vendors' products being listed as a pre-installed product on a computer since the dawn of the PC age. Peter Norton and John McAfee's reputations in the annals of PC historical software development cannot be dismissed.

well, with 18,000+ employees, a company can go from crap > excellent in just a few months with a total re-write of the software.

... not many companys can do that.

add this to very good marketing and sales team, and you get a product such as Norton.
