Help with disk defrag?

I have WindowsXP and Im having problems with defrag. When I open and click analyze or defrag, a message with an X pops up and says defragment cannot start. It's been doing that for a while now.
Awhile back someone here gave me a link for a direct download for disk cleanup tool to put in sys 32 folder and it worked great, can I do the same for disk defrag?

Check in services that the "DCOM Server Process Launcher" is set to auto and has started.

 

I did as you said..checked DCOM in computer management/services and it was already set on automatic and started. I retried to see if maby it would work and im still getting the pop up message that it cannot start.

 

You could check in Event Viewer for any error messages relating to the prob and maybe peruse this link which may offer some help?

Two additional's plus one by John B - How To: Fix Windows Built in Defragmenter, andreasroom.com. In answer to your question, XP includes (similar to the cleanup tool my man Ice recommended) a system32, command line utility. *Barring any permission issues you could probably get away running defrag c: -f after booting safe-mode w/cmd prompt.

Check in your system32 folder if there is defrag.exe.

In chase is missing, and since as you said you chkdsk.exe was missing too it could mean any of the following:
A) you forced shutdown/reboot and some files got corrupted or missing.
B) you used an utility to delete old files or you have a malware that deleted them.
C) The mft of your partition got currupted.
D) Your disk starts to have bad clusters.

Steve, first I have to figure out how this one loads in safe mode, it's a compaq Presario, but ill start it somehow hitting all the F keys at startup Ill let you know and thanks for the help

pandlouk , I looked in sys32 and defrag.exe isn't in there, the only one i saw was the defrag application, that's what it said it was under properties anyway, unless thats what you're talking about

Yes, it is the same file (probably you have the hide extensions option, activated).
Check also if there are also the files dfrg.exe, dfrgfat.exe, dfrgntfs.exe, dfrgres.dll, dfrgsnap.dll and dfrgui.dll. If any of the above is missing the defrag may fail.

 

You can try use Dial-a-Fix (stand alone). Click in Tools > Reinstall Defrag > Go.
