Any free AV software that does not care if I use it on my business laptop ?

I try to be conscious of the licenses. I use Avast! at home on my desktop, but my laptop is mostly for work, though not entirely. Avast! and AVG are pretty clear about my use not being what they have in mind.

Do you know of any ? I did have Spyware Terminator with Clam but it was too much overhead, I really noticed the slowdown plus I got sick of all of ST's nagging as you have to have HIPS running to have Clam integrated.

Is your business laptop used for commercial purposes? If not, you can use avast.

 

I do have some legal background, and from that point of view I would say that it's not permitted to use avast! Home Edition on your laptop. An interesting question would be, is the laptop yours of does it belong to your employer?

A cheap solution would be F-Prot (one license for five pc's!) for only $29.

PC Tools Antivirus Free edition can be used for commercial purposes - as far as I know. I didn't see anything in the EULA not allowing it - also I saw a post in PC Tools forum that said it could be used for commercial purposes although i can't find it now.

You can also use Moon Secure Antivirus (open source). I don't think this antivirus is as bad as everyone thinks it is. It's constantly being improved and yes it's based on ClamAV but they also add their own database.

 

Comodo Antivirus can also be used commercially. Though i'd advise you to use PCTools Antivirus instead. But i hear that they've changed their policy regaridng this...

 

That's right, last time I checked their EULA they were not very clear at this point. When you can interpreter things in two ways always stay on the save site, especially when dealing with company's.

Cool, I missed that one. Seems they offer the full blown AV right. The only thing extra with the paid version is the firewall so it seems. Interesting...

Rising doesn't seem to be very informative on how long this free version will run, neither it's mentioned on the website (only reachable through the direct link). I'll pass this one.

 

I forgot about Comodo Antivirus - although Beta 2 does not work on Vista - in case that's important to anyone.

I tried the free version of Rising Antivirus - it seems a little bloated to me. Very bloated interface. I was willing to give it a shot, but everytime I went to update, I would get a BSOD. It wasn't during the download, but the part where it would launch the installer to install the updates.

I went to uninstall Rising Antivirus from add/remove and it BSOD there as well. So I had to restore an image I had - thankfully.

 

I know I have seen some detection test results for Rising AV in the past but would you have any links to some? Also, I see this is AV only, kinda like the free version of Avira, how are other features? I saw some issues mentioned on download.com that this was heavy and time limited. Are these comments true?

I installed the rising antivirus free and it performs really well. Total memory used from all its applications/services= 19-22mb during normal use and 50-60mb during a full system scan.

It found most of the viruses and trojans I have on my test folder.

For a freebie is absolutly great.
