I remember when I first started playing with malware and AV's 4-5 years ago, there were two AVs that wilders folk seemed to recommend. They were Kaspersky and Panda. What happened to Panda? Most people here seem to think that is is rather second rate.

 

It could be something about their programs (except antivirus only) being so heavy on recourses. I don't really believe it's second grade in protection. Another reason for me not using Panda is, that you can't use VPN anymore....they gotta do something about that in the new version!

I tried Panda 2005 and it made my high speed net feel like dial-up! I'm not sure if it was the Tru Prevent technology or some http filter.

The plus side it did had a great green GUI and a Panda head in your system tray.

 

Panda is great, and im sure 2009 is a further improvement.

have they changed their upgrade policy (or lack of) yet?

 

Panda has always been one of my favorite AV's out there, and i used it for a while, but then software Panda begon to become more heavy and that is the reason why i removed it.
I never had any bad thought's about their detection, with Panda you are very very good secured better then most other AV's and i would ABSOLUTELY install it today and use it only if they fix that Panda would not be so Heavy and slow down my PC, then i think most would recommend it.
So for those who subimit beta bugs plz post about Heavy and explain that if they fix this all users would probably go back to Panda!

I have used Panda's two last versions of internet scurity and they both run like crap on my two computers. I will admit it could be my computers but they are different brands with different hardware and software configurations. I will say no thanks to Panda thank you.

I must say they did a nice job with the GUI. And I think I´ve tried older versions on my VM, but it was ridiculously slow.

I was amazed to read that the TruPrevent HIPS technology is indeed making all the decisions for the user, I didn´t think this was possible, it must be very intelligent.

also, i noticed some infected files in C:\Windows, for .DLL files, even on a freshly formatted restored PC.

 

You should take a look at the new KIS 2009 if you install it as express setup. Handles absolutely most things automatically, and that includes proactive protection as well through it's great restriction-system, which actually blocks the specifical malicious *actions* without blocking whole programs.

I'm running the new Beta of Panda myself and think it's okay, have my long list of results and observations on the other side.

The worst thing is I don't see anything really new with it except for the interface if you count big stuff. For me it's good to hear more automatic and probably for the basic users which the majority is, but I also wonder how that makes the FW as it's not impressed before... Atleast I can see the servers on Steam without confirming the prompt which does NOT always show in foreground present in 2008-edition. I knew that must be it so I'd to minimize the game through clicking on the windows-button in order to continue. Think I've experienced the same thing as C.S.J as well, prompting about fraudulent web-sites - and that was on YouTube!!

 

• Too heavy on resourses
• Touches in too many places in the system - takes control of the machine/OS

When it comes to detection - ok + it a bit of too sensitive heuristics

But I can't use it on any of my systems - so heavy that you can't do anything else

 

Btw, is there any out there that can take this TruePrevent HIPS for a test ride? I really wonder if it´s able to stop most malware attacks, and if it won´t give any false positives. Because what if it´s wrong, can you override it?

Yeah, I´ve been reading the KIS 2009 thread, and it seems like they have changed some stuff, so I will check it out for fun. I think it´s also a logical thing to do, 95% of all people don´t know how to use HIPS (and don´t want to know), so you will have to start making decisions for them.

Panda sucks. Its heavy, outdated. It may do well in tests but give them your email address and they will hound you to death. I tried the new suite and AV and had issues with both.

Jeff, remember it's still beta. I've had issues with both as well. And it seems that they just can't get rid of the heaviness, so a "thanks, but no thanks" shall be yelled from my humble place

Second issue: removing Panda can be very difficult. Like pulling weeds. One of the things I had to do is to disable services to get rid of it.

Online Panda scan: I tried it once, it started copying files to windows directories. Without warning. I immediately aborted it.

It used to be expensive. I don't know what it's like now.

I wouldn't buy it.

 

That is a new way of increasing the volume of your harddisk.
1. Windows Backup and Restore
2. ShadowProtect Backup and Restore
3. Panda Backup and Restore
4. Roxio Backup and Restore

The same will happen with registry cleaners, history cleaners, junk cleaners.
PerfectDisk Rx has already a registry cleaner, why not Backup and Restore as well and then I have 5 of them and I only need one. Terrific
