buttons blacked out

can anybody help me work out why the buttons are suddenly black? (images attached)
I can still tell what they are by hovering over them with the mouse and if I click them, the font changes to white, so I can read it (kind of).

 

The only time I have seen this happen is after a scan has been done in safe mode. I don't know how to fix it apart from perhaps a reinstall.

See this prior Thread in January (post #5 is a possible fix by hi-lighting User Interface in Advanced Setup, selecting Default, and choosing user Interface Settings Only ) Note that post #7 revealed the Scan-crash/Safe Mode issue that Jenee mentioned but you may not have that.

As stated in thread, my same issue just disappeared with , I thought, a module update - but who knows? Hope this works.

it worked for me even w/o having to restart ESS.
In fact it worked while ESS was mid-scan, so I guess I'm one of the lucky ones.
