apart from a longer install and a big chunk of the harddrive taken, i wouldnt really say the latest versions 'slow down' systems.

norton have leaped boundaries since 2006, the 2007 version was a revelation.

Have to disagree. They all slow down your system to some degree- that is indisputable.

The fact they admitted the slow down is a revelation.. LOL!!
But in all fairness 07-08 has been pretty good, can't wait to see what they churn out next!!:D

I have NIS 2008 and 360 and they run lighter than any programs Symantec has produced. But, lighter is not without some weight on your system. Several AVs I use run lighter on my systems than Norton including NOD32, Dr. Web, and Avira. So they have a ways to go until they can match what already has been produced by others.

As long as it uses ram and cpu time, it will have impact but if it is unnoticeable then who cares. Maybe they will multi thread their software to take advantage of all those wasted cores out there! These are exciting times for sure!!

No, but they want you to believe it as it creates interest and attention for their products. :D

    Hi,

to do well is better than to say you will do well next time... but the other way round is much easier.

I have tried NAV 2008, overall it's decent.
But what I didn't like was its RAM scaling, very low in idle mode but running up the scale when I launched some applications.

    Cheers

Re: Norton to Speed not slow Computers

The article says "he hopes" that the new Norton suite will not impact performance and in one case (not clear) make a box run faster. Hopes are not facts, and until I see concrete proof of a no impact AV, I will look at this as nothing more than typical marketing wishful/magical thinking.

Things are not as bad since dual core processors came on the market. One core runs the AV while the other does the work, LOL.

Hey silver tongues and shiny packaging sells!! They have marketing down to an art. The other tactic is fear mongering. I love the hype insecurity firms dish out!!
All those "new" must have features that no one else has!! Oooops we forgot to tell you it will bring your system to its knees and may be unstable on days that end in Y. BUT HEY, WHAT IS YOUR SECURITY WORTH??
Sorry had to let that out...:cautious:

Unless they have software that magically transfers its name to another competitor, for example if you're using threatfire with norton, and the norton process tries and disguises itself as a threatfire one... how is that possible? o_O

This is old news. Symantec more or less confessed this earlier this year in their security blog. Since then however they have revamped the blog site and now that post is gone.

I would still be using Norton now if it wasn't for the web page "hangs" I experienced (and blamed on satellite latency, lol).

In the beginning they told me : when your computer works slower it's an indication that your computer has "malware". Later on, I noticed that "Anti-Malware" also slowed down my computer.
So I don't know anymore, if I'm infected or not, it could be my AV scanner. ;)

Things generally are more fluid and work better when there not frozen.;) Perhaps a system thaw will be of help.:D

You can't ever have a zero impact program.

Even the hello world program can impact a system, even if it is for a few seconds. :shifty:
