    Hello everyone,
i dont like the way most antivirus vendors are heading.
they all seem to be adding pointless features such as online backup so on and so forth.
for every pointless feature you add the more of the team are taken away from the antivirus devolopment. so most vendors are turning in to jack of all trades which means they arent specialist in any area. it was bad enough when most vendors added firewalls without backup and god knows what else. even if i brought the just av version i still know that part of the team that could be working on better technologys to conbact malware are instead wasting there time on pointless features.

yep, online backups, optimization features too are a waste.

not even online backups, any that offers :to cd/dvd too seems a waste for an av company.

That's why antiviruses like Kaspersky, Avira, Dr.Web, NOD32 don't focus such useless features (or may have only backup for disinfection of rootkits), and focus on virus detection.

That's also why companies like McAfee and Symantec aren't really doing so well.

I agree completely with both you. AV's is supposed to be AV's, not a backup solution and/or a system utility. Look elsewhere for those things, you'll find MUCH better solutions from vendors making a living out of these.

    Cheers

i think its just easy to say "NEW feature! ......."

instead of improvements, im sure people would understand the improvement-statements much more.

I don't agree with you guys. Online backuping is a great (and especially easier) way for people to storage important files, so if the computer get's infected, you can reformat without worrying about them :)

I prefer backuping with a CD/DVD. And ok about that, but what about things like Gaming Mode, or System Tune up or other crap like that?

you think this is a feature of an Antivirus/internet security product?

while they are working on that, they aint working on something more important to its protection.

but it is true, you never know what YOUR antivirus will bring....... some good and im sure some bad too, which you will be forced to have/use.

thats the way it is i suppose.

yes online backup is a good concept but not a feature for a antivirus/suite.
i am looking in to online back myself but from a company that specialisese in it.

I would think that the companies would hire poeple for new project developement. At least that what they do at my place, as our product grows so does out staff.

It may be needed for cleaning some rootkits. If the rootkit has modified a system file and disinfection doesn't work, using a backup disk the antivirus could restore the original file. Pretty handy, but only backup for SYSTEM files.

All of the AV companies have lots of room for improvement of their existing products.
If I want online back up, as an example, I'll do it with what ever outfit has proven themselves in that area.
I think they are taking on too much.
Give me an AV that's almost bullet proof. I'll find a good firewall and hips on my own.
    Regards.

It just seems to be the trend nowadays, marketing mostly I suppose. Almost all products do this in some way or another. It's pretty hard now to find just a straight pure app that does one thing and does it well.

I doubt that the programmers that work on the AV part would suddenly be transfered to an online backup module that he knows nothing about. The AV part of the team remain the same, they simply hire new people that have the right expertise to develop the new modules.

That being said, I agree that most new modules in todays suite are getting a huge "meh" from me.

Those useless features may cause more bloating.

It looks like Quality AV vendors already understand they are under the gun where concerns some alternative apps like Virtual Systems, HIPS and the like in spite that some have gone ProActive in tandem with their detection capabilities.

But BLOAT! is a real deal breaker nonetheless and i'm one of many users who has consistently had my units pressured by them enough to narrow my choices and even change strategies entirely for lighter models of proficient security.

Don't forget that while many of the self-styled gurus here want only an antivirus, the average computer user mostly appreciates a single program that does it all for him at once. The antivirus companies haven't given up on AV-only packages either, so if you don't want the extras... then just don't buy them!

i think is wrong.but is only my opinion

How many times have I seen users asking for "backup" "system optimisation" "registry cleaner".....

They might aswell ask for a built in MP3 player, tetris in the virus alert windows and a google search box inside the main interface

OneCare is the one that started this trend. Soon other companies started coming out with their own "all-in-one" versions.

I do not use the backup in OC in favor of Paragon Drive Backup (just got this program and like it). It does not come with antispam nor parental controls so I have no problem there. So I use OC for AV/AM/FW, disk defrag and cleanup, and the printer sharing function. While some people call this bloat, I certainly am not feeling any pain here.

Of course these all-in-ones do not rock everyone's boat. I am sure that some companies realize this and are probably planning on keeping a standard AV/AM around.

I just need protection against hackers and viruses and all other threat's, if i am secure that nobody can join my pc and i will not get infected by any threat-malware out there , then i dont care about Backup, Defregment, and other stuff.
    So all i need firewall+antivirus+anti-spyware.
I hate when they add backup and other stuff that they dont need to.

jdenton has it. Almost all of my friends have a computer. One of those is interested in how the AV and system works. Everyone else pretty much doesn't want to know, ("too hard basket"), and are happy with whatever AV (Usually Norton) was installed at purchase.
I think the average user probably wants a one application does everything type application.
I sincerely hope the vendors who are still providing the nuts and bolts programs, that are very good at what they do, keep providing and developing them.

I concur. That is a disease of many softwares : adding features, that have nothing to do anymore with the basic job of the software, which usually results in bloatware.
Vendors have to listen to user's wishes, but say NO when those wishes are absurd. :)
