Does your AMD-based computer boot after installing XP SP3?

thats why i havent installed this on my older computer yet.

Although i'm one of those who absolutely refuse to jump at whenever Microsoft releases another patch or SP, it's useful information indeed that all these issues are coming to surface now and being widely reported and Hopefully $M will address/correct them pronto.

After all these years it still floors me how they continue to have problems in the engineering of these SP's.

That's why I always wait at least two months before updating anything major from Microsoft.

I always backup and test, if I have problems I can restore and wait for a fix

 

So far I have not seen any compelling reasons why I should update to this service pack, so for the moment I hold off. Curiosity may get the better of me as time passes, hopefully if that proves to be the case I will not be the proverbial cat

 

Yup! It took them almost 4 years to release this one and it was in beta for how long? I'm pretty sure RC1 hit sometime last November so I'm having a tough time figuring out why this issue didn't surface sooner.

OTOH, probably shouldn't come as much of a shock since the SP still has compatibility issues with one of their own products (RMS).......and they're blaming HP for this one? Sheesh!

 

I think the link on post #1 already contains the fix for the endless reboot. The author, a former MS employee, beat MS and HP in releasing the fix...

 

Answer to the Question of the Post Topic is NO! And I have the AMD Phenom 64 9000+ Quad Core processor running my Rig

 

Some of us including myself just can't bring ourselves to buy into this latest SP3, issues notwithstanding, and or bugs, IMO there are plenty enough security vendors who already have the jump on actual AND potential exploits being tried on our NT Systems and i've yet to experience anything of serious consequence running into malware OR exploits with just SP2.

Oversizing the amount of new files for yet another Service Pack that does absolutely nothing for performance just doesn't make the grade for some.

But, if it a user is insisted or warned to install it then i don't see anything wrong with adding it so long as it doesn't upset their already balanced system.

And thats exactly where i stand to date. After all this time ALL my units are pretty well in perfect balance and secured with only SP2 and i'm not about to chance blowing all the hours and weeks i put into customizing XP Pro to look and run as best it can be as well as blowing Vista out of the water to boot.

No problem here with AMD 3800+X2. As a matter of fact, i have the impression that now Windows boots faster!

 

Just so that you know, this is not just a AMD chip machine problem.

I recently had my Intel chip machine go into this endless boot (EB) syndrome all of a sudden after 3 weeks. Cannot even rollback to Eaz-Fix baseline installation. Endless reboots...... :-(

Refusing to believe this is SP3-caused, reinstalled windows XP and updated sp3 immediatelyand 2 hours later, EB started. How and why this happened, I don't know. Tried the gdi32.dll fix and intelppm registry tweak without any success.

Reinstalled Windows XP again with SP2 and the Intel machine is working nicely again. Will NOT install SP3 on this machine for quite some time until MS sort it out.

 

Correction : Further investigation showed a faulty usb wireless receiver to be the cause of the endless reboot problem.

 

Friend of mine had the issue on a HP AMD based computer, setting the intelppm service to disable via registry in safe mode fixed the problem
