Good free defragment tool for Vista?

I was thinking of JKdefrag (mainly because I don't know of anything else ), so I would really like to hear a suggestion!

i've been using AusLogics lately. It
seems to work pretty well.

 

i use jkdefrag mainly because when i brought this pc i couldnt afford diskeeper or perfectdisk. but then once i started using it i relized that isnt really a need to pay for a defragger when jkdefrag is so good.
i used commandline options to customize it for my needs. so it defrags my c: and F: partitions but it doesnt touch my images stored on Z:

 

I can't remember what it is but isn't there an issue with JkDefrag and Vista?

@HAN - Are you referring to the fact that JkDefrag needs to be run as admin?

 

I'm going to try JKdefrag tonight under safe mode and see how it performs

 

I've tried Defraggler, JK defrag, Built-in Vista's defrag, and Auslogics.
They all give similar results with the last giving least improvement.

I would either pick Defraggler or JK Defrag for free.
For paid, if you change your mind, go UltimateDefrag.

 

Why not try Defraggler (http://www.defraggler.com)? It's from the same comapy as CCleaner.

 

Don't know about Defraggler, but first impression on JKdefrag was wery very good!

No installation, no setup, just double clicked the exe file and 30 minutes later all set

 

I'm not sure about Defraggler either (I didn't know about it until just now), but I've been happy with JKdefrag. It's automated and has plenty of command line options, so it works pretty well in batch scripts if you're in to that.

There is one "gotcha" you'll want to look out for when using JKdefrag on Vista however... When JKdefrag moves a file to defrag it, Vista picks it up as the file being "changed", so it might flush out a few old restore points if a lot of files are defragmented. If you don't heavily depend on System Restore, that probably won't be a big deal. Disk imaging is superior anyhow IMO.

 

i use the JkDefrag with the GUI add-on......ive had no troubles with it in Vista...the only drawback in Vista, from what i understand is that JkDrag cant run the PageDefrag(?)(the sysinternals program) option because PageDefrag is only XP compatible the last i heard....

 

I'm testing Jkdefrag, Defraggler, and Vista's own. So far all I can say is that Vista's own defrag takes ages, JKdefrag has never been quick, and Defraggler is quite fast.

In terms of system performance, I really can't tell the difference when using one or the other: As my computer is quite fast, and I keep my harddrive fairly empty, any improvement would be hardly noticeable.

 

Have you seen any difference in shut down times? After using JkDefrag my pc shuts down in no more than 10 secs!

I find this amazing, it used to take 25-30 secs to shut down. Other than that, always compared to Vista's built in defraggler cause I haven't tried anything else yet, it also seems to boot a 5 secs faster and the whole system is quite "refreshed".

 

Vista's built-in defrag doesnt even show a graphic of what its doing last i checked...that was enough for me to find something else...i think the old XP defrag would never end when i tried it.....

 

Both Paragon Total Defrag 2007 and PerfectDisk 2008, while not free, have free 30-day trial downloads that work identically to the full program; so you can at least get "free" dfragging for 60 days.
I have verified that they work well under Vista.
You could probably exploit this on numerous other commercial programs also.

 

It's so because JkDefrag - by default - does a defragmentation AND an optimization. Defraggler (like Auslogic) doesn't process the optimization.

You can do a defragmentation only with JkDefrag also ("-a 2" parameter).

You have two good GUI's:

- JkDefragGUI
- JkDefragStarter

 

It is true that JKDefrag optimizes as well, and that takes time. I've been doing some time checks after what PiCo said about his fast shut-down time: No change for me with shutdown times (40 secs +-3 secs) before and after JKDefrag. I'm not going to try any commercial defrags as IMO they are a waste of money(especially for me as I use my systems always in virtual mode)

 

If you have time, I say stay safe with M$. Defraggler has been fine for me on XP. I'd probably trust it on Vista, too.
