Do you think it is advisable to have another anti-spyware product installed as well as that in AVG 8.0 Anti-Virus? If so what would you recommend?

I would say that a HIPS would fill in the gaps better, like ThreatFire. One could also use just SandboxIE with it, but as far as AS, the old Ewido didn't need a back-up, although some did use A-squared or BoClean with it. AVG does have some compatabilities with some of the immunize-type ASes...

I got an answer regarding the active x imcompatablity issues:

    Dear Sir/Madam,

    thank you for your email.

We are currently working on solution for this. It will be added into
next major program update of AVG.

We are sorry for this inconvenience. Please ignore the warnings in AVG
    tests.

It really is not an infection. Please see our pages:
    http://www.avg.com/faq?num=1198

    Thank you for cooperation.

    guess they finally heard us.

I've been using AVG 8 over the last week and am slowly getting used to it. When I first installed the program I ran a complete scan of my laptop and 286 'problems' were found - including the Active x items mentioned.
After cleaning up these on the system with AVG, today I decided to run another complete scan. The results showed no problems whatsover - no warning items, no spyware nothing at all.
Can this be right or am I being paranoid ?

I've now removed AVG 8 and returned to AVG 7.5 after too many problems with version 8 - pc freezing, very slow reaction times not just on the net but the whole pc.

Hmm.....After disabling Windows Defender in Vista SP1, I am seeing that AVG 8 runs smooth as butter on my Vista machine (except for the LinkScanner component which still slows down my google searches heavily). Its even better than Windows XP SP3 where I had noticed a slight but tolerable slowdown. But if Windows Defender is enabled, installing AVG 8 results in a very, very high system overhead. :doubt:

Disabling WD was the first thing i did when i bought my vaio vista lappie. I just don't want anything running in real-time for anti-spyware.

Just disable the browser extention in IE7 of AVG, go to extra, choose the option below phising filter, (browser extentions in English?), choose first option of the displayed submenu, look for components with AVG in it.

I'm aware of this workaround, I just wanted to state the issue so that AVG takes notice and gets it fixed :)

We are aware of the issue and it has been fixed already - scheduled for the next major program update. There is a public beta version that can be tested, the release is scheduled for mid June (in about two weeks)

Thanks for this information. I have been using AVG products since 2006 and there have been a few ups and downs and till date the ups far outnumber the downs. Hopefully this update will be released on time and I can finally get this bug fixed once and for all! :)
