I have used Tiny firewall everysince it was really tiny lol. 2.0
At the present I'm still using TPF 2005 Pro on my XP-Pro Computer and I love it.
I havn't really been keeping up with firewalls lately and was wondering if I should maybe start lookin for another more up to date firewall?
Also I may be building a new second computer so I would be needing a firewal for that one.

What firewalls compare well to tiny 2005 pro? Do all the newer firewalls offer loopback control? I remember some of them didnt used to give users control of that? Are there any out there that offer the power and adaptability that Tiny has?
What should I be looking at?

Probably nothing. Tiny 2005 Pro is one of a kind.

    Most of them do.

I doubt it, but there are probably a few that come somewhat close.

Hard to say. You will get many opinions. Perhaps Jetico 2? As with any software, try before you buy.

I would have bought Tiny 2005 Pro except that it was bought up by Computer Associates. What a shame. I'm not sure what they did to change, improve, or destroy it.

I used to use TPF2005 too. As far as I remember Computer Associates just killed it, sent it to oblivion. It was a slow death, they bought it and then just stopped communicating with the customers.
That was imo opinion a big nono, you dont treat paying customers like that so after that I´ve kept away from CA products.
I think and they teared out some of the stuff from TPF and put it into their then new firewall.

That's what I thought, so I really wanted to emphasize the verb "destroy". It seemed to be a fw way ahead of its time, a work of sheer brilliance that had the stuffing kicked out of it by a bunch of wingnuts.

Tiny was one of a kind, Ca destroyed it surely.
TPF was able to detect behaviour of several still unknown rootkit+viri+exploits.
No tool today is able to trace the way tiny does it, you could see hacker intrusions and actions in realtime.
Best IDS ever. One of the all time faves.

What good rules based firewalls are out there now that I might want to look at as a replacement when I build my second computer? I really have no clue where to begin looking. It has been years since I was keeping up with this sort of thing.
Even a nice packet filter type firewall that would work with the newer systems even possible 64 bit systems would be a good starting point.
Then I could look for individual programs to complement it such as sandboxing file and registry protections if needed?

I agree with all the other posters. Tiny was WAY before it's time...period! Although almost 2 yrs since CA bought Tiny Software nothing IMO can do what Tiny could...it had everything one could ask for in a firewall. Boy, do I miss it.

Tired almost all of the current firewalls and none met my expectations. Got spoiled using Tiny. Using Comodo now but waiting for Online-Armour to be Vista compatible to try it out.

    Good luck,
    Robert

I was in constant contact with CA when Vista was in Beta to testers. Have since given up on CA's R&D team.

To purchase Tiny and just make so minor "upgrades" was and is inexcusable!

However, I still check CA's Beta site once in awhile just to make sure that Tiny (CA HIPS) has been made available for testing.

What is the version number of the last good release of Tiny Personal Firewall (before CA ruined it)?

I am in contact with John CA's Internet Security Product Specialist. One cannot locate it on CA's site but from my conversation with them (John and Tech Support) an internal condition exitst that their HIPS R8 client side is Vista 32 compatible.

    Questions emailed to John:

    Confused:

    1) Everywhere on CA except the URL sent to me shows NO Vista compatibility.

    2) Readme files within the zip download shows NO Vista compatibility.

    3) The Learning Mode Tool Folder contains Harness 1.0.176 with properties of Modified 1/15/2007 (Vista RTM NOT available as of this date).

    4) Tech support said, “The client-side of HIPS is Vista compatible and that CA’s sites have not been updated to reflect Vista compatibility.”

    5) Nowhere does it say that this software is Vista SP1 compatible.

    Questions:

    1) Is this Beta, RC or Final Release?

    2) Does the Client software run on Vista SP1?

    3) Will just the Firewall run without the Server side installed and with FULL capabilities?

Will update when details become available. Sure hope CA did not do what Symantec and others do when it buys out another security software and just made it Vista ready with updated SNORT rules...just leave TINY how it was!

It seems that CA drops the ball on a lot of stuff that they are responsible for. Take for example, the Pest Patrol website which is several years old (the program has been "updated" on the CA's own website). CA bought out Tiny after they released the 2005 firewall version (which is not to be confused with the Tiny/Kerio/Sunbelt firewall program version). After Kerio took over firewall version 2.0.15, other Tiny developers went on to produce a totally different product.

    Tried installing v.176.

    Results:

    1) Explorer won't even execute among other OS processes not executing.

    2) Safe Mode cannot uninstall CA HIPS.

    3) One time got into the desktop.

    4) Tiny in is it's greatness (v.126) still preserved.

    5) Revert though System Restore.

    Robert

    P.S. Still hoping!

Tiny was a great piece of software, I liked it a lot when I used it a few years ago. The only thing I can think of now that even comes close to it might be Core Force. I played with an earlier beta more than a year and a half ago, but have not checked it out since, so I'm not sure what it might have evolved into.

    Here is a link:

CoreForce seems to be dying even before it could have grown
I think it needs a lot of configuration etc( just a guess, I never tried it though).

Based on a few messages in their forum, it does appear that it has more or less been abandoned by those who were working on it. But it may still be useful as is, I have not tried it for some time though. It seems much like Tiny in some ways. Maybe someone has some recent experience with it and will post here..

Got it to install on both Vista an Vista SP1. Had to uninstall Comodo first. Thought I could just disable the startup service's of Comodo.

However, it does not reconize my NIC card so no firewall protection whatsoever. Within the Admin Center>Zones, the display is blank so cannot move the NIC and VPN's to Safe or Dangerous Zones. We had this scripting problem in the earlier versions of Tiny 5.0 but that got resolved. This is on a clean install image with nothing else installed except Office.

Some minor problems with XP SP2. Still have to manually input the full IDS/IPS XML file after the install but it is definitely different than Tiny's SNORT ruleset.
The rules are already enabled with some set to Prevent while some are set to Monitor.

Sometimes the Admin Center will not close properly but no big thing as it does not shutdown within the Systray.

It is basically the same as Tiny v.126 with minor changes. CA took out the ability to alter rules within the Admin Center>Reports. Cannot change the Log Viewer like we could in Tiny (forgot what they were).

No time to test all of the rest of it's features but will time permitting.

Sent an email to John to forward to the proper division. Hope they listen like Tiny did.

Robert thanks for the effort you are putting out on this. I do hope you will keep us posted on your communications with CA.

I have downloaded Comodo and thought I would give it a try. From what i've read it has some good points. It looks to me the rule making is a bit more confusing than Tiny's was.

I remember alot of folks used to complain that Tiny was a hard program to set up. Myself I allways believed that Tiny's rules were very straight forward and easy to configure for the most part.

Comodo looks very confusing to me but i think its because Tiny spoiled me.
I have allways loved the simple format of the packet firewall rules. Simple easy to figure out very basic without window dressing to confuse me.
