    this forum is biased!
    1. is this product just like Prevx 2.0?

has a scanner, seems to have a user database, seems very similar to me to Prevx 2.0

    2. is the HIPS good/better/worse than Prevx 2.0?

    3. resource usage and features, how does it compare once again?

    just curious,

    thanks.

also, i noticed the licence is just £10, how long is the validation date for?

DS was thoroughly & recently discussed in THIS thread.

DS seems to be a good all-around HIPS, but it has a serious memory leak that its proponents have been trying to fix -- unsuccessfully -- for rather a long time.

With the last developper version, I haven't seen it's memory usage go over about 15mo, with an average of 3mo when Idle.

The last version was 3.0.1 released 1 Feb 2008. Notice post #2 in THIS DriveSentry forum thread, whereat the memory leak is reported and, on Feb 15, 2008, the DriveSentry Support representative said:
After a follow-up query on this persistent issue, on Mar 7, 2008, the DriveSentry rep said...

The memory leak affects version 3.0.1 which is currently the latest version, and (unfortunately) that issue DOES still exist.

    The latest version is 3.0.2.25.
I am not sure, however if the memory leak issue has been fixed.

Their forum shows 3.0.1 as the latest. So also does their News Blog. Also, the download at DS website yields version 3.0.1.

Can you provide a screenie showing DS with version #3.0.2.25, plus a download link therefor? I really hope you're right!

Is their 'GoAnywhere' product any good? They say it's a firewall developed for a USB.

Tried installing it but after a few minor problems, might need to re-install again.

As I said in my previous post, above, with the *developer* version, (in my case, at the time of testing it was 3.0.2.23) I did not notice any memory leak.. So far, just some minor problems with Teracopy, despite having given it writing rights in DS.

The latest build is 3.0.2.25 the guys at Drivesentry don't seem to update the build section of the forum or the news! Memory usage on my Vista PCs is 30mb and on XP is 19mb and hasn't changed. I think memory load goes up as the background scanner caches signatures (good and bad) as file i/o occurs. I'm told there's a build 3.02.26 coming on Monday which I was sent by their support guys last week to see if it fixed a problem I had on Vista Ultimate (it does).

1, The two products work very differently under the 'hood'. I have found in real malware testing that Drivesentry has a detection rate on par with Threatfire.

2, Drivesentry from version 3 also started to include heuristics and behavior detection if the process was not recognized. In my opinion with real malware it is much stronger than PrevX.

3, If you download the local database (e.g. 1 million + good and bad signature file) then memory can goto about 20-30mb. If you only use the online system then it doesn't go much above 4mb.

4, The license fee is a one off no subscription model.

Check out the Screen Shot! DriveSentry relation to Comodo? Maybe DS is just using some kind of Comodo Service.

    dja2k,

Interesting observation as something has certainly stepped up a gear in Drivesentry!! They have just announced another major deal in Europe http://blog.drivesentry.com/2008/05/currysdigital-and-currys-superstores.html

Where on the site does it tell you it is $10 one-off payment?

I can't find any pricing info at all on their site.

    Apologies if I'm being slow.

Yes and No :) Drivesenty doesn't expire it stops certain functions and carries on running. I've been told by their support people that things will change in a new build coming out next week(?). The new free version will synch every week not real-time, if you pay you get real-time updates. There will be no other difference to the free or retail version!!! More info on how their database currently works from the: Help File

You don't have to buy it, when the trial runs out, you will loose the automatic allow feature.

Hey interact, I saw your sig and come to the conclusion that you have no actual AV but are you using DriveSentry sorta like an AV because of its growing signatures? or Are you relying on ThreatFire for that?

    dja2k,

I no longer have AVG installed as Drivesentry has a significant database now and is also Checkmarked I've started a new series on YouTube testing A/V products using real viruses (no biased test tools!). I deliberately disable internet and if possible a/v databases to see how good products are using their own inbuilt detection technology. I'm going to test 3 products a week and upload. The first products I have tested are ones I use daily.

Chris, I would stick with Prevx as it doesnt compete like Drive Sentry will with the Web. With Prevx, in a few short months, things are getting ready to change. Bad or good, I dont know yet, but I am willing to stick it out and see. Bought my license today. Goes very well with Returnil which is my stable. Prevx has always been the one I wanted to see win. I dont know all their internal issues but at this point I am keeping my fingers crossed it pans out. Remember Hermescomputer.
