I don't really "use" a free AV, but since I install avast! for my family and friends I have it running on a test machine as well, just to keep tabs on its performance.

Not sure if it count, as the OP might have implied "resident/active" AV, but I use only ondemand scans. Essentially for checking removable or relative's drives.

I am using AVG Free edition.

I am not qualified to claim it is the best or anything, but I can report that it seems to work as advertised and I have had zero problems using it with Vista.
It is set for automatic daily updates and scans, with resident mode scanning all incoming/outgoing files. Works smoothly.

In the past, I ran always AVG Free, which was recommended to me at the Malware Forum SWI.
Nowadays, I don't use any scanner anymore, it's too time-consuming, not complete enough (missing signatures, etc.) and f/p's.
I still run them sometimes, but more out of curiosity to see how good my solution is, it tickles my ego, when the scanner didn't detect anything. :D

I don't use any AV but I vote Avast. Newest version looks good and those new features are awesome. What I don't understand is that why they offer so much for a free?! I don't see any reason to pay for a Professional version.

Avast without question. It's by far the most fully featured free security package out there. It's what I install on my missus' laptop aswell as family and friends machines. It's hard to see how they give it away for free, I feel like there should be a catch.

If i would be using a free one it would be Avira.

There is a big difference in the results so far in this poll and in that of broadband dsl security forum.

Best free for me would have to be Avast!

Been using it more often then any other with satisfactory results, no performance issues, and is steady both on updates and correcting F/P's.

Most others bog my poor 512MB memory down to a slow crawl.

I would like to try DrWeb Cureit though, looks ok and reports on it aren't too bad.

    Easter,

cureit is great, but it's only an on-demand scanner, no rsident protection... it's main function is to use it on machines that you know are infected.
The only "limitation" is that for keeping it updated, you must download it again (~9 MB)
At first I felt like that CureIt was missing in the options of this poll, but I guess the poll is targeted at resident scanners.

I'm using PC Tools AntiVirus at the moment. Looks like it isn't in the poll though.

I have tried AVAST works great, AVIRA in a VM VISTA Machine works fine really nice, AVG Free in a small library works really pretty nice requires little intervention.
