PerfectDisk 2008 too Many Fragments Left Over

PerfectDisk 2008 Not so perfect with this release it leaves too many fragments and still reports a excellent Disk State. In my view, leaving over 6587 files fragmented does NOT! Constitute a Perfect Optimized state PerfectDisk 8 never did this, you are always left with a 0 (Zero) or close to Zero fragmentation once its completed its Smart Placement Pass. Also it tokk 8! Attempts at getting PerfectDisk 2008 to Boot Defrag because it kept saying insufficient space to defrag System Files. Perfect Disk 8 took care of this nonsense in One Offline Pass I'll be sticking with Version 8 for sometime yet

I've just started to have this problem too but not to the extremes of DVD+R. I always have a few fragmented files left over after running Smart Placement defrag.

It's not a huge problem but it's just annoying as previous versions never had this issue.

Also, if I move the leftover fragmented files to another partition, Perfect Disk will just decide to left different files fragmented.

I have contacted Raxco and will update this thread if they provide a resolution...or not

 

I recently downloaded, installed, and ran a trial of PerfectDisk 2008 based on the many positive recommendations throughout the netverse.

It certainly seemed to do the job, but is it really worth US$40 to me, the single computer home user? At US$15, certainly, at USD$20, perhaps.

I went back to using Vista's defrag C: -w -v

 

My experiebce wit hPD 8 is that the product is indeed worth the money.
The built-in Windows defragger is brain dead by comparison.

 

PD2008 does seem to be the best, albeit pricey.

 

JKDefrag 4 will be just as good

 

then again if you think thats pricy look at diskeeper pricing
i use jkdefrag now for my current system.

Jk defrag combo with Defraggler works nicely.

 

Its a common issue as so many report this,its also mine observation,so Raxco should be alarmed ,but admit that's not the biggest disaster that can hit us,so i can live with that,actually not of a problem at my end.

 

Sometimes PerfectDisk has still fragmented files after the first defragmentation.
In that case I run PD one more time and then it's gone.
The second defragmentation is of course much faster done than the first one.

 

Just now i read the OP,and yes that not good with so many files left fragmented,in my case after a run with PD 2008 it shows only 6 to 8 files with 20 or 30 fragments and thats another cup of tee i guess.

BTW the sleek and functional design of version 8 is already taken over by all the bell and whistles and unneeded xtra's of the newest incarnation. too bad.

 

I am testing PD_2008 right now.
It took my main harddrive right to 0% defrag with no problems.

I also had very good luck with Paragon's Total Defrag 2007, but I switched just because the tech specs for PD_2008 seemed a bit better.
I just finished FINALLY getting VISTA SP1 to install. I wonder what MS is thinking when they "improved" the defrag tool ?!?!?

Anyway; With all the total crap software, and bug-ridden atrocities on the market right now, I will gladly pay $40 for something that is tested and corroborated as performing better than other programs. (I;m not claiming it is the best; just that at least they have tried to create a chain of documentable test evidence that they do a better job. Most independent reviews showed PD_2008 as being slightly better also.) Whether I really need a few milliseconds of improved file retrieval is another matter.

 

I am writting up some testing I have done on 4 defragmentations tools (Windows XP built in defrag, Jkdefrag, Diskeeper and Perfectdisk).
The Windows XP built in defrag tool is the worst in all cases I tested and when theres alternatives for free or pay it seems daft not to replace it with a better alternative.

But back on topic...

What is the file(s) that are being left fragmented, are they in use ? Does reboot before you defrag help ?
Does PerfectDisk move [any parts] of the file or is it left 100% as before the defrag ?

Hi..

I run dual boot between XP Pro SP2 and Vista Ultimate SP1 and PerfectDisk running on Vista is far more problematic in terms of leaving fragmented files imo. It does happen on XP sometimes but it usually resolves itself if I repeat the defrag one or two times but on Vista I can repeat it dozens of times and not make any progress at all.

I have been defragging through the night as I've had some free time and have found the following files to be particularly problematic...although it's not just these files affected:

C:\Program Files\Adobe\Acrobat 8.0\Acrobat\plug_ins\Preflight\Preflightlib.dll 50.6mb
C:\Windows\System32\mrt.exe 18.2mb
C:\Windows\System32\WDI\LogFiles\BootCKCL.etl 10mb

None are system files, none are in use by any application at the time of defrag and none have any restrictive permissions applied. If I choose to move any to a different partition, PerfectDisk will just decide to leave other files fragmented. Boot time defrags do not fix the issue or stop other files being left fragmented.

I have only noticed this problem since installing Vista's SP1 so it may be related but I wasn't using PerfectDisk 2008 for that long before I installed SP1 so it may just be coincidental.

I have run exhaustive chkdsk scans on my disk which all complete without any problems and there is nothing in my event log to suggest there are any system issues which could be responsible for the issue. Vista is installed to a partition of 25gb and I currently have about 9gb free space so there's plenty of room to perform a high level or defrag.

I'm aware it's not a huge problem as it's only a small number of files being left but previous versions of PerfectDisk managed to do the job without this hassle so it would be nice if the new and 'improved' version could do it to
