    Don't like it!
Sometimes, you CAN"T sign in (work?)-but you still want to read one
of the more knowledgeabe posters advice or search for a thread you
know someone posted but can remember the thread name,
    only the poster's..
Maybe just leave off the contact information?

The member profile has links to "find posts by member" and "find threads started by member", but those simply execute Search commands. The same results can be found by using the member's username in the Search screen. In addition to finding all thread or posts by the member, the advanced search screen lets you limit it even further by forums, sections, date ranges, replied threads, etc. You don't need to specify keywords in searches by member name.

Just to confirm it was possible until recently to "view profile" by clicking on a member's username without being logged in? All i get now is that familiar error message "You are not logged in or you do not have permission to access this page. This could be due to one of several reasons:" etc, etc.

Yes, that is a recent change and is intended to be that way.

    Hi,

Can this change be undone? It is very annoying, and I wonder why this has been changed in the first place, I don´t see any good reason for it.

It's actually annoying for me, too, and I'm the one that changed it. However, I got sick of all the bots trying to farm the entire membership by stepping through every profile, one by one. So, I'm probably not going to change it back.

In reality, the only things you can't get access to because of this change are a member's personal information - i.e. their last activity time (last time they were online here) and their contact info (IMs, ICQ, etc.). Those things are visible now only to logged in members, not guests or bots. A member's posts and threads can be found via Search, returning the exact same results as the links on the members profile page. So, its a little inconvenient, but, I think its better.

OK, I see, I didn´t know about this bot problem. And thanks for the tip, via search you can indeed find member posts, but it´s not exactly the same, I used this function ("find all posts made by") to check out my own posts. But now you will also get to see threads that were "upped" by other members, eventhough you haven´t replied in the topic yourself recently.

If you select the option to "Show Results as (*) Posts" then it is exactly the same as "find all posts made by". In fact, that profile option simply calls that search function. If you leave it set to the default, which is show results as threads, then yes, you'll see threads bumped by others even though you've added no new posts.
