About to start a round-robin of some trials: ESS, KIS, AVG, Avira
I understand Avira 8 is imminent, ESS and AVG are not due for upgrades in the near future and KIS 8 is in beta-testing.
When is v8 out so I can decide what order I go with [tbh I wasn't planning to run AVG at all but a few friends rave about it and it is at least new latest version with Avira and KIS pending still - and Norton Trial almost up ;) ]

Thanks. Few posts in another thread said version 8 was nearly here so I got curious.
looks like it goes to the end of my list then! PIty as it was really meant to be a slug-fest between KIS or ESS vs Avira [free]&Comodo

    Hi Lodore,
I would also prefer to wait until it gets rid of the bugs to the extent possible.
It may be an incorrect perception on my part, but I have the opinion that Kaspersky has more bugs each time a major update/upgrade, such as MP?, is introduced than most other AVs. I admit I may be incorrect because it affects me.

Version 6 ran well on my machines until MP2. I finally uninstalled it and went to other AVs. Version 7 through .125 has done well, but the latest version started very slowly, and I returned to .125.

I hope that V8 will not be buggy, but if so then I will go back to FSIS, Avast, or Avira. I do not have the expertise or the patience to try to fix a buggy program unless I can do it easily.

    Regards,
    Jerry

You will see this with any vendor despite their efforts to minimize it with public beta tests. Every successive step (internal testing > controlled external sampling > public beta evaluation > release) introduces more diversity in the user base with the last two steps being successively larger ones. This is simple reality. Product complexity naturally also contributes to this.

    Hi Blue,
I don't doubt that. I suspect that the IS applications are more complex, and maybe KIS is more so than some others. I do see problems in all the various AV specific forums when a new version comes out. I guess there are always problems involving different computers and what they have installed. Some never seem to work with a specific AV or such.

On one hand I am eager for KIS 8, and dread it on the other hand because I anticipate problems. Of course, I will wait awhile and see what others are experiencing. Maybe some of my AV junkie friends will get the bugs all worked out soon after introduction.
    Thanks for the reply.

    Regards,
    Jerry

    Why not test for yourself?
Final will be out when finished. It is at RC1 right now. But guess there will be some more.

If they release it in 3 months, I think the version naming of the product conflicts with this. It seems it's being called Kaspersky Antivirus 2009/Kaspersky Internet Security 2009. Many users prefer the v8 notation, but I guess marketing have decided they want the 2009 tag. Even so, to me that doesn't make sense mid-way through 2008 if it's released at that time.

I notice Symantec & McAfee tend to release their following year's product lines usually in early fall. That makes more sense in terms of selling next year's line in say September or October, not mid summer. But who are we to question the mindset of marketing departments? ;)

i am just hoping it is as bug free as possible before release.
i would of prefered to call is kav 8.0 and not kav 2009 but i guess kaspersky marketing have decided on kav 2009.

Ironically, I see no one ever calling it KIS 2009, it's always refered to as KIS 8 by its users. Even marketing departments should acknowledge that.

I also hope they make it bug free to an acceptable degree (so that only minor things are left) before release. You see a lot of programs rushed out too early.

I ain't smart enough, and 7.0.0.125 is running so well on both systems that I am content to "let sleeping dogs lie."
Maybe lodore or trjam will get it worked out and make my way a smooth transition without any speed bumps.:D :D I can hardly wait.:)
